  1. the new home of virtual caches...
  2. one of my favorite places to find out what's cheap... pricewatch.com here for flash memory prices
  3. thegpsstore.com is listing the 300's now, in stock and shipping for $146 Here you go ...interesting, they are showing the 300 specs as having a maximum or 500 waypoints... edit to add: REI is also showing the 300 as available - and the 500 waypoint limit. here while tigergps shows the 200 as in stock for $129 - here
  4. + all data from a .gpx file displayed + waterproof + talks with a sexy southern twang and tells me where to go (back to sensitivity training)
  5. "Logging DNFs, How many do you log?" all of them... I like to laugh at myself later.
  6. 1. The eXplorist line does this now, with limits. You can see the locations on the map, scroll to it and bring up 'basic' information (type, DT, owner, placed date) and can look at an abbreviated hint (limited to 50 characters, including spaces). I assume... that magellan would improve the overall capabilities of a new handheld to try to include most of the data found in a .gpx file - text and full hints, and possibly past logs, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. We have to get a real unit - with cable - in hand and run some tests before we can say for sure what the Triton line will or won't do. 2. SD card will allow your memory pool to be nearly limitless. I'm sure the on-board memory will fall between 64-128MB, but the SD will allow you to expand that greatly. The last I heard, from a VP at magellan, was that the unit would hold 1000 waypoints at a time, which is five times more than the eX line. BUT, there has been some speculation that it is really 500 points (geocache type) and 500 waypoints (user defined). again, we need to get a unit in hand before we can confirm - because getting info out of Magellan is like getting money out of me... 3. .gpx files - again, not sure, but it looks like they [magellan] are leaning towards using vantage point for your waypoint manipulations. Me? I'll stick with clydeE and GSAK for my waypoint management. HTH
  7. touch screens don't work with gloves... and if they do they sure don't work well I don't think they work with screen protectors either. Plus the screens tend to get all full of fingerprints. I guess we'll hear how touch screens do when the Triton comes out. I'd rather have buttons so I can easily operate the unit with one hand. gee, my 9 year old palm pilot works with a screen protector. i think they can figure it out...
  8. come on, Magellan Rep. Change your name and welcome to the forums...
  9. and how, exactly, do you know this??? you should just change your name to Magellan rep now, and save the embarrassment later...
  10. I have direct route 2.0 and it has pretty good detail on street names. I got mine from a friend who burnt me a copy. I think 3.0 is all you can get now. Its the DVD version. ok, see, that's something you don't just blurt out to the world.
  11. from the photos, in the triton (8 page thread) it looks like the older meridian attachment. Flat wide cable that screws into the back of the unit, and can only go on one way. would be too difficult (or not make money) to use a standard connector. picture of the back here... and here, over at GpsPaSsion
  12. When it's ready. As Ambrosia and I both know - those who are platinum are already running v2.
  13. here's a good tutorial for Cachemate on the Palm + GSAK (Geocaching swiss army knife) for the PC click me and win! HTH
  14. toes on the beach...? like this? vac last year in St. Lucia
  15. if I turn my gps upside down it tells me I'm in China...
  16. 1. You cannot route with topo maps (driving directions). 2. Don't buy it from the Magellan website, you can find cheaper deals elsewhere. 3. Perfect gift would be Direct Route and Topo. DR gets you close and parks you, topo takes you to the cache while avoiding that nasty cliff.
  17. The cache descriptions and hint should just transfer over through vantage point. This is similar to what folks do today with their explorists and the geocache manager software, or through GSAK. You get all of the text from the cache descrition, and finder comments, plus the hint. Not sure about the 'snapshot' though. The only downside to going TRULY paperless right now is that a palm with cachemate gets all of the text, but none of the pictures (I know, there are other solutions, but this one appears to be the most popular). A direct transfer of the cache page would be great, but it doesn't come in the .gpx file (unless I am mistaken...). The perfect solution would be a GPSr that can carry and display all of the information from the cache page; text, pics, hints, past logs. Also, looking back at the older Triton thread, the cache limit was stated as 1000 points for the triton, versus the 200 limit currently experienced by all explorist, meridian, etc... users.
  18. nuvi 260 is a good choice also, and it speaks street names and directions. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles (blurtooth, fm transmitter, traffic option, etc...) just a good basic GPS with great maps that talks to you so you can keep your eyes on the road. HTH
  19. Video demos are up on the maggie website here. Shows some software and hardware items I was wondering about... edit: Appears to be just the 2000 demo'd. I tried the other links but the 2000 demo kept popping up.
  20. I call shenanigans! "Well, it got here - I popped in some batteries and took it for a spin . . . " 1. yep - just popped in batteries and went for a spin - didn't load any cache data or software or anything. Just went for a spin... "15 minutes later when it got a lock I walked across the yard to hop in the jeep and lost the signal. " 2. What happened to the whole "popped in battery/went for spin" thingy... ([liar]) 3. SIRF III - "15 minute signal lock" - I don't think so, unless your back yard is in a cave in your back yard... "Regained signal and went for a ride to check it's use hunting a cache." - here we go again. When did you stop to load a cache? Pulled into the parking area for SunnyGina's Take a Hike and after waiting to get a signal again started walking in what I knew to be the correct direction. After 30 or 40 yards I went home." lie, lie, limey, lie, lie try again
  21. Could you provide a link to where you are seeing that? I must be missing it. Never expect Maggie to tell you anything, or make it easy to find. Here is the link I found at the Maggie factory sales store. And yes, it does say Mid-January delivery, for those too lazy to click... I wonder if we could storm the gates and take over the company. They must have a bunch of drones in their marketing department. sheesh. Triton Press release, August 7, 2007. "official" [or ANY] information from Magellan since then? ZERO.
