  1. I've tried Powerizer 2700 mah with mixed results. They haven't done well in high drain electronics for me, but have been great in my 60CSx. In the Colorado, I've had the best results with Duracell 2650 NiMH. I've been using the La Crosse BC-900 to recharge all of them and really like it.
  2. Snake do not hear. Vibrations? No, I don't think so! Determining a snake's sex from casual field observations--nope. Actually, I never said they can "hear" in the sense that you and I can. Like many other animals, snakes have two ways of detecting sounds: earthborne and airborne. While snakes lack external and middle ear structures (including the tympanum, or ear drum), they do have inner ear structures which have been shown experimentally to receive airborne sound waves. Airborne sounds are transmitted to the lung from the skin receptors to the eighth cranial nerve and inner ear. In addition, earthborne vibrations are passed through the belly muscles to special receptors along the spine and thus transmitted to the brain. Either way, by not taking care to move silently, and by tapping on rocks and the ground with your walking stick, they will know you are approaching.
  3. Since you cache in the same area as we, you will come across rattlesnakes. The picture below was taken on a morning hike. This Red Diamond never rattled at us and wanted nothing more than to sun himself on the rock and be left alone. We did just that. We take a walking stick, walk slowly and deliberately, watching where we step. We make noise so that they know we are coming. Most of the time, they will do one of three things: (1) move out of the area, in which case you will never see them, (2) rattle a warning, in which case you will move out of the area and may never see them , or (3) they will lie quietly hoping that you will not see them. That was the strategy of the snake in the photo. I might add, when you get to GZ, use the walking stick to poke around for the cache before sticking your hand blindly into any rocks. We have come across many snakes, including our share of rattlers, and have yet to be bothered by any of them. Most people who are bit are being stupid.
  4. I just removed one from mine due to a couple of huge scratches and a rock gouge that destroyed the shield. No residue and the screen is completely unmarked. I am currently waiting for a replacement shield.
  5. When you send the gpx file directly to the Nuvi, how is it treated; ie, how do you access it? Are the waypoints in "Favorites" or are they treated like a POI under "Extras"? Thanks. I agree - that's the way it works for me. I have the 660, so maybe there has been a change. Sorry for my crappy explaination. Sending waypoints directly from GSAK to the gpx folder of the Nuvi, the waypoints show up with the treasure chest icon as "Favorites". This is what I use for navigating. The treasure chests are large enough to be seen at a wide variety of zoom distances . . . which I like. Using POI loader to send the same gpx file to the Nuvi will have them show up in the "Custom POIs". They are tiny dots on the map that only show up at the closest zoom distance, so they suck for navigating. I use them only because I have GSAK setup to show more info in the POI--including the terrain, size, and hint. I only use these if I get to the cache and need to look at the hint.
  6. I load the caches into my Nuvi with GSAK. You need to export your unfound caches as a gpx file. I send the file directly to G:\garmin\gpx\notfound.gpx; where G: is the drive letter assigned by your computer and notfound.gpx is the name of the file I created/exported. Additionally, I also create the same file on my hard drive and use Garmin's POI loader to send the cache information and hint to the Nuvi as a POI. POIs do not show up well on the Nuvi's map, which is why I do both.
  7. Question: Why is there a Republican sitting in a boat just outside of a baseball diamond off of Harbison Canyon Road? Answer: It seemed like a good idea at the time but now that he's there, he can't leave the boat because doing so would give aid and comfort to the terrorists.
  8. 3720 to 1.......... Oh no wait, that's the chances of succesfully navigating and asteroid field, nevermind LOL Wouldn't that depend on how many asteroids are in the field? Move along. Nothing to see here . . .
  9. K Perhaps one of the mods would be good enough to get rid of this account? But his profile is so interesting...... I think you should join, Eric, and then tell us all about it.
  10. K Perhaps one of the mods would be good enough to get rid of this account?
  11. The newer versions of map source (I think 6x or better), have a drop down menu for target that shows both the internal "Garmin" area and the external sd card. I did make a Garmin dir structure on my sd drive. You don't even need to make the directory on the SDCard. MapSource will do that for you. In fact, for whatever reason, I've had better luck loading large map files if there was nothing on the card. Not sure why this is, but if I try to overwrite, I'll end up with an error message. Just send the map to the drive letter assigned to the SDCard, as PP described above.
  12. No it won't be Jahoadi. Quit deluding yourself. It is all about the numbers. I submit as proof, your own numbers! If you insist on hiking with your friends, you will have a rotten time, thinking of how many caches you could be getting. You will be kicking youself in the pants at every "find" they make. This is really lame. Don't do it! What you are displaying here is a classic example of congnitive dissonance. Tell your friends that you are too ill to hike with them, wish them luck, and then go someplace where you can get some new finds.
  13. The one time I've returned a unit to Garmin for repair, and they replaced it with another, I simply had to call them and explain the situation and they gave me a new unlock code. Assuming you are swapping out units at REI, you should be able to do the same thing. If you are returning the unit for your money back, I'm not sure. I think a call to Garmin will likely result in a satisfactory solution in either instance. BTW, I am having the same battery issues, but I'm waiting for the next Garmin update to see if it resolves the problem. I'm not ready to give up yet.
  14. I have a cache placed near a pond by a humane society place and made some statements in the cache listing about cachers being able to adopt their new best friend while they were there and got it shot down for advertising. I have found them to be pretty strict on this.... That surprises me a bit. Humane Societies are usually non-profits and perform a public service. I'd hardly call a passing remark regarding its proximity as advertising for a business. Maybe the reviewer is a cat lover?
  15. This would fit me as well. When it is no longer fun, I quit and log the DNF. I may go back though, since I am a bit stubborn. I once went back to a cache 3 or four times before I found it, and had over 2 hours invested in it. Eventually found it within 10 feet of my zero.
  16. This is such a cool feature! It's kind of like when I watching something really good on TV, and Rooster is yacking about. . . well, you know how it is. You know she said something, but you have no idea what is was.
  17. Huh? Do actual work? If you did that, when are you going to solve all those puzzle caches? EXACTLY, LLOT. You see my point.
  18. Wasting company time is not nice. They need to fire your IT guy over this. Well, no, not really. In this office, I am the IT guy. HQ decides connection speeds though, and insisting on using Skype only makes things worse.
  19. I am thoroughly disgusted with the speed of the office's Internet connection for the last couple of days! T-1 lines aren't what they used to be. I suspect Skype's supernode is in effect. This has made checking forums or cache pages extremely time consuming. Don't they realize that by providing such a slow connection, I am wasting company time that could be more productively used doing the actual work I am being paid for? Really! I am ticked off!
  20. I've done these before. If you recognize it, there are at least two online solvers for this type of puzzle. You should be able to come up with a solution within 10 minutes or so, depending on how fast you can type. Of course, if you don't recognize it . . .
  21. You may safely dispose of the following calibers by sending them to me: .22LR, .308 Winchester, 7MM Rem Mag, .380, or .44 Mag.
  22. 80% of my family quit caching. I'm the only one now. They all quit because they think it's annoying when we go for a hike and have to constantly stop for geocaches. They thought that I was only hiking because they was a geocache on the trail. I proved them wrong by doing some hikes where there was only a terracache on the trail! But seriously, I think one reason is that some people don't like to cache alone. Some people feel weird looking around by themselves. So we started a local caching events thread where we post when/where we'll be caching so anyone that wants to come along can join us. I think this idea has helped keep people into the game because it adds camaraderie. I know that I've made a lot of friends that way! Actually, I don't mind caching alone when Rooster doesn't feel up to it. I can hike at my own slow pace then without worrying about slowing others down. I think most people who quit early do so after finding one of my geocoins or travel bugs. They then quit and keep it. Seriously, it seems to me that more and more people today have limited attention spans. Caching is something new and adventurous, but that quickly fades and is replaced by something newer. We have friends who cached for about a year, and then took up SCUBA. Why not do both? I dunno I think it's limited free time, and too many transitory interests. Then again . . . maybe it is your breath
  23. Actually they do. Click on "My Controls" on the top right. Then click on "Manage Ignored Users" towards the bottom of the left side. I think it's time to use it again.... Thanks for the tip on this one. Always nice to rid yourself a constant annoyance. I have just exercised my control. Thank you as well. It was getting old. I was discussing this very issue with "lostguy" yesterday regarding the same individual. I have exercised my control as well. I am now angst free again
