  1. The VERY FIRST cache, was located in Portland Oregon U.S.A. Near my home and contained a can of beans. It was the trip to find it that started all this, and to me, the hunt, is what Geocaching is really all about. Don't give up. Bob G. (1pilot)
  2. Well it looks like this is now the OLDEST cache ID=8 I looked for #5 today with no luck, But found ID=8 where it should be. Bob G.
  3. I e-mailed Mike Teague, last week about #5,"Secret Lava Beds" and he said he was going to check on it Sunday. He also said it wasn't hidden all that Well,so if nobody's finding it ,it may be gone. I plan on driving up there tomorrow, to look for it ,and the others in that area. Bob G.

  7. We had a geo cachers get togeather, a while back, at a park with a lot of tree cover. We split into teams, hid two caches then went hunting. My team had four e-trecs(three yellow and one venture) and two magellans (mine is a meridian) the e-trecs were all over the place 100-300 ft off, and had trouble keeping a lock on even three sats. The Magellans had lock on seven to eight sats the whole time, AND found the cache. The Venture owner said his next GPS will be a magellan. 1pilot

  9. I would love to find a good book in a cache, This could work well with Geo caching. Better than Wheres George Bob G.

  11. I also agree with everyone, both have their drawbacks. Mapsend works ok for me on my Meridian and usually shows the streets as they appear in real life, aside from the newest additions( a lot of new devlopments here in Vancouver WA) but I rarely need street maps for the cache hunt as most are in areas that have no streets and the discriptions don't often give directions to the cache using street names or numbers. I will say this for accuracy, on a recent cachers get together, we had several Garmins and two Magellans looking for a cache that was placed, and the Magellans were getting seven to eight sat's in tree cover, while the E-machines could only find two or three. A Magellan found the cache. Bob G. (1pilot) [This message was edited by 1pilot on June 17, 2002 at 02:32 PM.]

  16. I have one to place in the Vancouver area by next weekend, but am a bit worried that we are starting to lose a lot to plunderes. Ryan and Crystal, lost both of their Burnt Bridge caches and I thought that they were very well hidden. that kind of attrition is hard to keep up with. We do need more cachers like fractal, explosis, Makaio, MattandLaura and the rest of the prolific bunch,to keep it going. I have been thinking of maybe having a set lifespan for my caches, then when it is reached, move them. that might keep more caches going and minimize the chance they will be plundered, also, the impact on the site. 17. I used an older Magellan Blaser12,four years old.Was not able to upgrade it at all, It got me to eighty finds before I bought a new Magellan Meridian, My son now has it and is starting his Geocaching habit with it. So yours should be ok. Bob G.
  18. The upgrade went well, got all the bells and whistles now.Didn't mess anything up!! Has anyone used the basemap upgrade, that comes on the Mapsend Topo disk? Or is it for a different model Magellan? Bob G.
