  1. Glad you were able to get it to work. I plugged mine in this evening and Presto!, it put an icon right on the map where my house is. For some reason, its really wild to see my position on the map like that. -Matt
  2. Personally, I prefer UTM. Once you understand the system, it is much easier to find locations on a map using one of the plastic overlay grids (I use the one etched into the baseplate of my compass). As a bonus, its easier to estimate distances without having to resort to using the scale since the grids are spaced 1km apart for USGS 7.5' quads. For a good discussion, see this site.
  3. Does any one have experience using NiMh batts in the maggie 315? I've been using Rayovac's rechargeable alkalines and they don't seem to give very good life. I've tried to be careful about not letting the batteries drain too far before recharging them and letting them trickle-charge to make sure they are at "max" charge. But I'm lucky to get 7-8 hours out of a fresh set (without backlight and in a reasonably good reception area). NiMh sounds great, but I don't know how the 315 would handle the lower voltage. Any suggestions?

  5. I will check mine out this evening when I get home.
  6. I haven't linked MP up with my maggie 315 yet, but as far as the program itself: It has lots of nice features, but the address database is NOT accurate. It confuses important differences (like So-and-so Street vs. So-and-so Avenue. And sometimes the numbering is just plain wrong. I don't know who they license their GIS data from, but it needs help. It wasn't accurate in Texas (Ft. Worth area) and it isn't here in Tri-Cities, Washington either. I haven't used it in Seattle or Portland, but based on it's accuracy (misacuraccy?) in Ft. Worth, I'd be surprised if its any more accurate. (Well, maybe in Seattle....OK OK, maybe in Redmond....OK, I bet the Microsoft campus address is at least right) The software itself is nice, but the database sucks.

  8. OKOKOKOK My wife says I'm too compulsive about this sort of thing. Judging from the lack of responses, I guess she is right. -Bpacker

  10. If I select "Open file from location" instead of save, I'm then asked if I want to open/save an .asp file. If I then "open" that file I'm asked if I want to save the .loc file. Weird. At least I can save. BTW i'm running IE 5.5 on NT4 -bpacker
  11. Is anyone else having problems downloading coordinates? Instead of a .loc file, I keep getting an .html file of the web page the cache was listed on. I haven't had this problem before...anyone have any suggestions?
