  1. Personally I like to try to write something unique about each cache that I find. I may not be the most verbose about my experiences but I try to make my log reflect the enjoyment of the cache I found. My creative writing skills may be lacking but at least I try. If I find a particularly lame cache I will post a TFTC. If no thought went into the cache then why should I put thought into the log. Anyway I see the benefit of C&P. For me it would encourage a longer post that told of my overall experience cacheing that day. It may even draw out more details from me. I understand it would be uncool for the cache owner of lots of caches that got 20 of the same log but at least it would be worth reading once. So I propose a C&P option that requires a minimum of 500 characters. This way you would have to at least think about your experience some and try to include details of your trip but you could then log a bunch of caches at once. If there were some minimum limit it would potentially inspire people to write more. I for one have only done 10 caches in a single day so its not too hard. But I do find that I do not write as much trying to be unique on each one. Once I tried to write a generic log and then ad a little line to each cache that made it unique so that I could cut and paste without being too lame.
  2. Ooh thanks for the replies! I am pretty sure my parents told me about the live oak. I will have to visit that for sure. Carney Island look like a nice hike I may visit that too. I drove by Seminole forest last time I drove down I may have to check those out too. I would love to try the Wherigo but alas I have no compatible hardware. Not too big on Russell Stover and we have one of those up here that I have never gone to. But thanks for the tip.
  3. I will be visiting Fruitland Park Florida soon and was wondering if anyone knew of any must see caches while I am there? Nothing jumped out at me in the pocket queries but that doesn't mean there aren't some gems.
  4. If you're using the iPhone app to log in the field, this is a known bug. Post as field note instead and then log using a browser to get around the issue until Groundspeak fixes the problem. Ahh I see, I think I did use the ipod touch to log the finds. Not 100 percent sure but I will buy it. You think I could delete my logs and relog those finds to fix them?
  5. Well more than a week has passed and the dates are still wrong on at least 4 of my finds in the pocket query. The date displays fine on the website when I look through my geocaches page but the pocket query has the wrong date encoded into it. Would love to get this fixed but not sure how as it is obviously server side. Is there a place to report this type of thing?

  7. I have not placed a cache yet but my feeling is that the only was a needs maintenance is a black mark on a cache owner is if they don't take care of it in a reasonable amount of time. My feeling is that he got bent out of shape because he didn't want to check on it. When I get around to plcing a cache I hope to maintain it very well. This is one of the reasons I have not yet placed a cache. I want it to be easy enough for me to get to to maintain and I want it to take someone to a place worth going. Unfortunately so far all the spots are taken that I have come across. This is another reason for NM logs. It could point out poor cache maintenance and reveal a needs archive cache so that it can free the spot up for someone who wants to maintain a nice cache.
  8. Exactly the kind of thing I was thinking
  9. Yes I have finds on 10-9-10 and on the site they show up as such but the query they have a date of 10-10-10. This is looking at the .gpx file with a text editor. With those finds added do you get 6? I imagine it will be fixed in the backend (is GS a SQL back end?) and then your stats will sort out correctly. Or you can change them by hand in GSAK and lock the entry so it doesn't get over written next time you import a MyFinds PQ. Yes with those finds it adds up to six. Sorry for not being clear about that earlier. I did generate the pq on 10-10-10 so maybe if I just wait until a later date and rerun it all will be good. I tried changing it in gsak and for some reason I had no luck but that is another thread and another forum.
  10. Do you have any finds on Monday or Saturday of that weekend? The server seemed to have hic-uped a little as it doesn't seem to work on local time, but instead works on the time zone in which it is located (rather common actually). It was noticed mainly with the 10-10-10 souv. Yes I have finds on 10-9-10 and on the site they show up as such but the query they have a date of 10-10-10. This is looking at the .gpx file with a text editor.
  11. I was just looking at my stats generated by GSAK and noticed something peculiar. I looked and it said I had 6 finds on 10-10-10. I immediately thought something must be wrong with GSAK or one of the macros but after some exploring I noticed that the problem exists in the .gpx for the my finds query. If I go to the site I see that I have 2 finds on 10-10-10. I go to check my preference date and it is set correctly at eastern time in the USA. Anyone know how to fix this issue. Not a huge deal but I want my stats to be accurate. My guess is that somehow the pocket query is generated in a way that ignores the timezone preference.
  12. ok sorry I thought it my be a simple answer.
  13. Is there a way to transfer my macro setting in gsak to another computer? Where are the settings for macros saved? Any help would be much appreciated.
  14. I tried it in wine and found I can't even open it. Invalid floating point operation. I would be happy if I could get it to work even without the split screen browsing. Did you do anything special to get it to work? Ooh I got it. Before it crashed I quickly clicked on view and changed it to turn off split view and it appears to work at least a little. I will play more to see if I can get away from the vbox solution.

  16. My 10-10-10 was a mixed bag o' good n bad. My wife got sick and was throwing up, she was feeling so bad and wanted to lie down. I was tired and wasn't planning on going geocaching but using the day to rest. In a desperate attempt to help my wife I took the kids out so they would not bother her so that she may be able to sleep between sessions with head in bucket. So I asked the kids if they wanted to go geocaching and they both yelled yea! So off we went. I grabbed a puzzle cache that I had previously solved that was a short little hike in the woods. Went back to stage one of another we had done before but I forgot the coordinates of stage 2. Decided that stage 2 was too far of a hike for the littlest who is 4. Decided to go for an historical park and grab let the littlest point the way. Once we found it we sat on the grass overlooking the nearby road and read the history of the area. They wanted to do another cache but the littlest needed to go potty so we went back home. Then we sat down and read a highlights magazine together. So if my wife had not been sick it would have been a very peaceful relaxing day with the kids. Would have been more fun if she were with us or at least up and able. Now I sit at home sick myself. It looks like it caught up with me. Hope the kids don't get it.
  17. I wil;l have to try this out. It looks pretty nice for a manager but what a I really love about GSAK are the many macros. If this could use the macros then man that would be sweet. Or even if similar macros could be built for it that would be nice to. Currently I have to use GSAK in a VBOX copy of win XP which is actually quite annoying to have to have all that just to get GSAK to work. This has been one area that the opensource community has let me down. I will give it a shot but replacing GSAK is what I would like to do. And I actually own GSAK not just a freebie. I would pay again for a quality piece of cross platform software that could use macros and work on win and lin.
  18. To me a sport is something many do but few get paid to do it. It is something that takes physical ability and skill to play it. My ideal of sport excludes both golf and baseball
  19. I just passed 100 and have mostly sought after short .5-3 mile hike caches. Once went on a urban kick while out of town and gpsless. I already prefer woodsy places with scenic views. Have a cheap etrex but do paperless with iPod touch. Have many pocket queries for all the places i might be. Keep a bag in car with walking stick, first aid, water and batteries. I use GSAK to organize finds and pocket queries. So i am a mixture of several stages in that list.
  20. Normally only takes a minute or so for me too. I do things last minute as well. If your email is the bottleneck you can always download it directly for the PQ page.
  21. Go to geocaching.com (make sure you are logged in, you will see your name in the upper right-hand corner) Type in the gc code for the one you found in the gc search box on the front page. (or search by location and then scroll through the list to find the one you want to log) In the upper right-hand corner click on log your visit. Select your Log type as Found It! Type something you would like to see if you were the cache owner in the comments box. Then go to the bottom and hit submit log entry.
  22. I'm no expert and I am not familiar with the Venture, but will it not take the waypoints as Garmin Custom POIs? We have the Legend HCX and I export the contents of my GSAK database as a Garmin POI file and put the resulting files onto the Legend (not the memory card but the device itself) giving me just over 7,000 caches (over 20,000 waypoints including child waypoints). You don't use the built in caching tool, but search with custom POIs instead. It works fine and you get the treasure chest cache icons (open for found, closed for unfound). Apologies if this doesn't work on the Venture, but if it does then it's one way to increase your on board caches beyond your current 500 limit. I will have to try it! It sounds like I could. I always thought it was silly to have 20meg internal but limit to 500 caches.
  23. Personally I like seeing what other cachers are up to. I don't mind a simple plug. We tend to be of like mind in at least geocaching so we may have other interests that are similar as well. I do think he could have left off the link. I could easily google it if I were interested. The link is the only problem in my opinion. I will say though that it is not a soapbox issue.
  24. That's the same GPSr that I use. I've found that the combo of the iPod and GPSr works just fine for me. Same GPS here. It would be nice to have an all in one unit but they are so expensive. I already have an iPod touch so a cheap GPS works great. I have found the Venture HC to be fast at acquiring satelites, works great under a heavy canopy, and is pretty good on batteries. To be honest the only thing that really makes me want a better gps is that the Venture HC is limited to 500 caches. I travel to lots of different local areas and have lots of little pocket queries. I wish I could fit them all on the GPS at once. I load them on the ipod and end up manually entering coordinates lots of times.
  25. I use an iPod touch to do paperless caching all the time. I use the official Groundspeak geocaching app. I think it works pretty well. I can download pocket queries to fill the ipod with lots of caches or I can pick and choose by searching by location. It stores all the info as if you printed it out. It has the description, hints, last few logs, and trackables info and more. You can even fill out your log while in the field and upload it when you get home. Once I left my GPS at home while out of town. In the hotel I downloaded the satelite view maps to my iPod touch for a bunch of park and grabs while in the hotel and then still got 10 caches.
