  1. Lord willing and creek don't rise, I'll be there! Woody
  2. Cache in. Trade up. Trash out. That'll always keep you out of trouble.
  3. WooooHooooo! I used to be a Ragin' Cajun. I attended USL. I now know that it is UL-L... Anyway, I agree with everything nincehelser said. EasyGPS is a good waypoing managment tool that gives you sorting, routing, and naming options that are a lot easier to do with EasyGPS than it is with your unit. If you find you like the sport/hobby/obsession, I also HIGHLY recommend ExpertGPS. It add some neat mapping functionality that I use very often while caching.

Remember that there is a distinct difference between virtuals and locationless. _Virtuals:_ Someone gives you coordinates and you go there to find something they think is neat - but there's no box there. _Locationless:_ Someone gives you something neat to find and you go out and find it and tell them the coordinates at which you found it. http://www.markwell.us http://www.chicagogeocaching.com I stand completely corrected. I do tend to lump the 'ain't a box at the end of the hunt' kind together...
  5. As a rule, the only reason I do a virtual is to get it off the top of the pages in my near home view of the caching world. I'm not a fan of virtuals. Then again, I went to a virtual cache (one of those historical markers) that made me laugh out loud at an interesting piece of history. But, I don't like virtuals.... But to have the opportunity to have policemen all over the US and World get acquainted with the fine folks that follow our obession would be a 'good thing'. But, I don't like virtuals...
  6. quote:Originally posted by solohiker: quote:Originally posted by AikenToCache:Earth to solohiker - ever hear the phrase "tragedy of the commons"? Nope. k... The concept comes from the commons, or common area in towns. In colonial times (and before) folks would graze livestock in the commons, especially if they did not have land of their own. In esssence, using the commons was free. As a result, more and more folks used the common area as a free resource until the commons were destoyed. Overgrazed and poisoned, the commons were lost to all. Thus the tragedy of the commons. Think spam. The guy that wants to sell you viagra or Pamela Anderson videos of convince you to MAKE MILLIONS$$$$$$ uses email... Why should he pay for something that he can get for free? "What we attain to cheap, we esteem to lightly..."

  8. I have a Magellan Map330. I can sit in my bonus room and get and maintain WAAS lock. I can sit in my garage, with the unit in my van and get and maintain lock, although I usually lose WAAs in the garage. I was hunting a cache in heavy pine forest with a guy that had a GPSV. He constantly lost lock. He put his external antenna on and put it on top of his head.... still couldn't keep lock. My 330 never lost lock. I hunted with a family with an eTrex. Same area as above. Mine never lost lock. They turned off the eTrex and we used my unit. I have lost lock on the hunt twice. First time was first thing in the morning in HEAVY forest with wet leaves and rain. I stopped in a bit of clearing and stood still for a minute... it came back. Second time was in a rail cut with very high sides and overhanging trees. That's what I know...
  9. None of the available caches for us are less than an hour away. Well, two are, but I'm saving them for my diabolical scheme. So far, by carefully holding out caches inside of 20 minutes, I have sucked unsuspecting geomuggles into the game...... now if they will just start hiding caches!
  10. I think it right neighborly to replace a broken down-ain't waterproof-cheapo-leaky piece of plastic with an ammo box.... Thanks.
  11. I was hoping it was down to add the fleeces....

  13. quote:Originally posted by T-storm:Snip And don't forget when you get here to hit http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=5739! It's kinda tough because it gives very little in the way of hints to figure out its secret, but plenty of folks have proven it findable. T-storm As a matter of fact, that particular cache is, according to ExpertGPS, exactly 5.0 miles from my in-laws house and is already on the list! Thanks for the reply and idea. AikenToCache
  14. Okie day... Here's the deal. We are headed from SC to TX over Christmas. In the last couple of days, we have run across a couple to travel bugs and I have emailed the owners to see if they are okay with a long delay that will yield significant miles, or if they want them back in the wild sooner. So far so good. I had an idea on the way back to the house from the day of caching... What do you think of a Bug Trap cache? I'd set up a cache hear in SC that would be open until we leave for TX. The specific purpose would be to collect Bugs for a trip West. I'd archive it when we left and spread Bugs out West while caching on our visit. In the words of my sainted grandmother,"Is that etiquette?"
  15. There is one feature on the Maggie I have that is invaluable... auto averaging. Everytime I have cached with someone that had a Garmin, we found the cache by putting the Maggie on the ground until it had time to get a good average position.. then follow the compass bearing to the cache. In auto averaging, the influence of trees, hills, etc. is taken away. Check out http://www.gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/sportrak-pro-rev.html as mentioned... and http://www.gpsinformation.net/etrexlegend.htm
  16. quote:Originally posted by Daturk:Please help this tech. deprived old man. I have downloaded the Groundspeak site and the geocaching site but I can not transfer the geocache co-ordinates to the easygps page. I keep getting eror message. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.........Don W. The key here is to open easyGPS and leave it open. Then, after you have clicked the "download to EasyGPS" button, keep clicking the "Open File from its current location' in the dialog boxes that show up.... if you 'save this file to disk' it don't work... as you have seen.
  17. quote:Originally posted by CreagerStone Family:Infosponge: Could you elaborate on that? What did ExpertGPS do that enabled you to find them? With ExpertGPS, you can download satellite imagery and topo maps of the area around a cache. In my case, for finds in the woods, I can see the map and match up the imagery to layout a plan of attack. It saves time and besides, it is REALLY cool! I'll email what you could have had with you for your last cache.... and you can zoom in and out too!
  18. ...Your sister, wives of co-workers, Pastor's wife, and wives of friends won't talk to you because you are responsibile for SEVERAL GPSR purchases. ...You have copies of ExpertGPS, EasyGPS, Mapsend Streets and GeoBuddy on EVERY computer in the house. ...Your main reason for getting DSL is the ability to download maps in ExpertGPS at 1.5M/sec. ...You are thinking of moving to have a more dense cache environment
