  1. My My My... it's been quite awhile since I logged on here. I got a new job that allows me to travel North and South America and abroad. It makes me smile to see how big this Geocaching idea has grown. My 2 caches have made legendary status and are still active with many many visitors. Well, I'm gonna start the search again. Don't be surprised if the "Old Captain" Captain Leno pays your cache a visit....
  2. I had a 71 VW micro bus full of shovels and rakes and all other "implements of destruction"... Boy, that sure brought back memories. Just remember, " you can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant..."
  3. "Good Grief! What did we do before the GPS?" Well, to ask that question would be along the same lines as "What did we do before Electricity?" Yes, I know that we as Americans did things before GPS, but now, Billions of Applications world wide have completly converted over to GPS. To shut down GPS now would to say the least Paralize the transportation industry for a short time. It is simply not worth it to mess with. And by the way, there are probably several of those sattelites that are privatly owned I would guess, and the government simply could not get them shut down.. GPS has infiltrated the American Way of life to the degree that it is as important as the Telephone. Semi trucks run up and down the highway's now with GPS tracking, and Virtually all comercial Aircraft use GPS navigation... Another thing to ponder, Does America ownb all the GPS sattelites up there ? Does Russia have a few ? If so, shutting down ours would be simply Ridiculas, since I am sure that other countries would not hestitate to sell their GPS machines to our enemies and let them do as they please... Don;t worry about GPS shutting down, it is really a Non-Issue....
  4. Well, If I recall.. There was no shutdown during the Gulf War. Simply because the GPS was introduced during the Gulf War. I remember watching CNN and seeing them talk about this New Invention that allowed our soldiers to be aware of thier location at all times. And being an Avid Fisherman, that already had a a Lorance System, thinking to myself, I need one of those.... There was no shutdown during the Gulf War. Simply because there were literally no Public/Private use GPS at the time of the Gulf War. I would not worry too much about the Government shutting this down, could you imagine the impact? Almost every, if not all airlines would be grounded, all cruise ships would be docked, all Cadilac On Star owners would be Crying the Blues. Every Hiker on the side of a mountain somewhere would be lost and stranded till they turn it back on.... Almost Every Charter boat fisherman would be lost at sea.... I think we can all rest assure that GPS will not be shut off... They may put that Selective deal back on there, but I doubt that too... If 50 feet one way or the other really makes a diffrence when calling in an air strike, they might, but I doubt it
  5. If you go the extra yard... Use PVC glue and install a cap on one end. And on the opening end use a Plumbers Rubber Screw Plug. Some folks call them freeze plugs. They have a T handle on them, and as you screw the thing down in expands and make a very good seal... Only thing is this is sort of an expensive way to do things.. Ammo Can at Gun and Knife show...around 5 bucks depending on the size... And remember, at these shows, most people will barter.. 5 bucks for one, or 20 bucks for 6, you get the idea....
  6. I've got "God knows how many hours" flying the RC remotes...
  7. I got me a 6 chuter Spirit and a Airframes T-2. I hold a BFI and love to fly... Low and SLow !!!
  8. Really ? not here in Indiana ! Just about any local hardware, sports and gun place has it... But we also got some pretty loose Handgun Laws also.. It is actually really easy to obtain a permit, and carry a loaded concieled handgun here... Maybe I should start selling the stuff on-line...:0
  9. I go by the Nickname Captain Leno here.. There is a real reason for that... I have a pretty nice boat, and run Lake Michigan for Salmon, and could confortably take along 6 or so other fisherman. What type of Flare Gun are you carrying ? I am assuming your carrying the most comman type made by Sola and sold under several diffrent brand names. They can be purchased at Walmart, and load a small 12 gauge flare. They are sold with 4 flares, 3 Red Streaks, and one white streak (the practice Flare) First and Foremost, I think you should check your local authorities on this issue. You may be carrying a Fire Arm without a Permit which in some states can be a Felony and end up costing you much more than you expect. Second, If you feel that you need to carry some sort of personal protection, I think you should carry something a little more suited for the situation, and suited to your training. But getting to the flare gun. Yes, A 12 guage flare gun would most definatly fend of a would be attacker. But here is something to ponder. A flare gun is Single Shot, and does not Reload very quickly, so you must be accurate the first time, and hope there is only 1 atacker. Also, the range on a flare gun would probably only be accurate within 10 feet, they just do not pack that much Muzzle velocitiy. And a Flare Gun can do a lot more damage than just fend off a would be attacker. a Flare Gun Could and Would without Hestitation start a Forest Fire... And a Forest Fire, under any conditions, with very little wind, can without hestitation outrun you to your vehicle, and burn you to death along with everything else in it's path. Simply put, a Flare Gun is really over all a poor choice for personal protection. There are much more fitting and safer things for one to carry with them to protect your self.
  10. Does it not have the Back Track Feature ? Welcome to the Nut Farm.........Robo Cap Store If at First you don't Succeed, Keep on suckin' till you do Suck Seed
  11. Linking Logs.... Are not those the little wooden toys that has been around for years ? If at First you don't Succeed, Keep on suckin' till you do Suck Seed
  12. And you know, I might just do this myself.. Thanks for the idea ! I am a coin collector. If I was to do this, I would suggest the casher seeking the Treasure, take along a collectable themselves... Nothing Major, but would it not be kinda fun to go seek the Treasure knowing it may contain a Real Silver Dollar? or a Real Silver Halve Dollar? Or maybe a handfull of Mecury Dimes ? And all I had to do in return was carry along a Roll of Wheat Pennies, or maybe 6 or 8 Buffalo Nickels, to leave in return... This could also work with State Quarters or something of the like... Hey, I think I am thinking of a Captain Leno Cache.... Thanks for the IDEA !!!!!!The Robo Cap Store If at First you don't Succeed, Keep on suckin' till you do Suck Seed [This message was edited by Captain Leno on December 11, 2002 at 03:28 AM.]
  13. I think I am the only one who has not posted to this thread... NOT ANY MORE !!

  15. How do you ask other geocachers to bring along a truck to remove washing machines, car tires, and other things that are rather large... Get the idea ?
  16. As with all hobbies.. Their are many aspects to it. For instance, I am also an R.C. pilot as well as an Ultra Light Pilot. I know people who build FABULAS airplanes, but don't really fly. I know people that are so ingrossed in the mechanics and aerodynamics of a real airplane, and spend all thier time getting faster and more effiecient... And I know folks who want nothing to do with building, they just want to fly. And there are some that just like to hang out around the airport and talk airplanes, they do not own, or build, but are very knowledgable.. So for me, I guess, the hiding, and the planning of the hide, is what I enjoy most about Geocache. I just recently got 4 travel bugs in the mail, and am thinking of ways to hide them... Could be that some folks that are getting into this hobby has ideas of wilderness that are diffrent than mine... Heck, I live so far out in the boonedocks that I have to go towered town to hunt...
  17. Now I admit, I am not the most active geocacher. And for the most part, when winter hits, thats when I get interested in the hobby, and in warmer months, I tend to stray away. I have hidden 3 caches, found 1 that I cared to log, and looked for several that I either found, or did not find, or simply gave up because of the area it was in... But I have come to the conclusion, that the 10 or so that I did not care to log, or gave up on, well let me just put it this way " I have litterally found more interesting places pulling off the side of the road to take a leak"... I just came in froma spot that was nothing short of a GARBAGE DUMP on the side of an old country road... I have a pocket full of Silver Coins that I was going to leave, but I felt this cache is simply not deserving of them, or my time to log it... I will admit, that my first cache that I ever hid was not what I would consider the greatest spot in the world, but even at that, I had several people log it and really enjoy it. My second cache is in a GREAT SPOT, and have had nothing but priase for it, and it's unique CAMO ( #2 was the introduction of the "Instant Stump" and is still in service almost 2 years now. My 3rd Cache, which I recently hid, was logged by a fella that has found 50+ caches, and told me that this 3rd one, and my 2nd one is his 2 favorites of all time, and wished that I would hide more.... So, I have resided to the fact, that for me, the hiding is WAY MORE fun than the finding, at least in my area... Maybe I am just an old CRAB too.... Happy Hunting
  18. Maybe, maybe not, I don't know if this has been tried....but..... You know, almost everyone decorates for Christmas in some way... But some folks, like my nieghbor decorates in a BIG way !!! I Mean REALLY BIG !!!! I am all the time telling folks they need to drive by and look at the Plithera of lights this guy puts out every year... You know where I am going with this... How about a Christmas Virtual Cache of Unbelievable decorations in the area ? I mean this fella is simply UNBELIEVABLE. He has actually built a storage building the size of a 3 car garage just to store his decorations in the off season. I think tommorrow, I will mark his house, and list a Virtual Cache for Christmas ... This might make it fun for the entire family to find this fellas house and see this ridiculas amount of decorations....WOW... Has this ever been done before ?
  19. Is alway's a silver coin or two... Usually Merc Dimes. I am an avid metal detectorist and have hords of Old Silver... So, when you visit a cache that I placed, be sure to look for the Silver. I usually, put in more as I do Maintenance also. One cache I placed, I actually buried several silver dimes around for anyone who desired to take along a detector. That was kinda neat.
  20. You know, Hands shakin a little...... I simply cannot imagine the accuracy change making that much diffrence.. Bombs are like Horshoes, they just have to be close... The Robo Cap Road Rag store
  21. You know... That stump idea really did take off.... I have had thousands of e-mails asking me to actually send a KIT to make those things... I have not really had the time lately to go looking for too many caches. So yesterday, I decide to set out to find 2 that where close to my location. I could not find either one of them... I have come to the conclusion, for me, hiding the things, and comming up with way's to hide them, is probably the "Fun" part of this hobby for me... And by the way... I am flattered by the response of the "Instant Stump" yes I was the brainchild behind that idea, but the fun of the stump is actually taking the time to build it yourself, being creative, and making it on your own... Maybe I should put that little website back together and let all the new folks enjoy it too....
  22. next summer when I get back up I will try one... There is a really cool farmer near me that Plows "God Bless America" in his field every spring...really neat from the airhttp://www.geocities.com/lenopam]The Robo Cap Store
