  1. I've been chided by people for pointing this out - "No REAL geocacher cares about their find count", and then invited by the same person to go to an event cache luncheon to celebrate some milestone count of finds. (Or sometimes hides and finds - 1000 / 100 is typical.)

There's no need to add a "found it" smiley for a hide in any case. Our local hiders who care about this are in a race to see who gets to some milestone number of hides, and they simply compare the count of caches owned. Since no one will actually come out and SAY they are trying to compete to reach a milestone, this is kind of fascinating to watch from a distance.

You are SOOOO correct with that statement.

The "hip" thing to say is it isn't about the numbers, at least around here.

Kind of like no one wants to admit that they like watching TV.

  2. Hey bigcall,

Beside caching, I am sort of into coin collecting. The best place to get those coins is to make the rounds of several branch banks and ask for them. Sometimes you can just call the bank and ask. That would be the cheapest way. Also check the U.S.Mint.org. I believe you can buy them by the roll.

    Yup-

Also, give Ebay a try. (GASP!!) I have had good luck and gotten some pretty decent deals there.

  3. ;) Well, I am not one--

However, I WOULD like to take time here to thank a Geocacher (shall be nameless unless I get the Ok to put the name here) who is an EMT.

A bunch of cachers were taking a course over the weekend that took place at a fellow cachers house.

Upon leaving, my cousin was T-boned by a car as he left the street near the house.

The cacher, who also happened to be our instructor for the day, heard the accident and in a flash grabbed their medical kit and was helping out/checking on those invloved in the accident. To our surprise the Cacher turned out to be an EMT as well!

Thankfully, no one was hurt too badly.

So, thank you, our caching guardian angel, for really taking care of us that day.

Your fast thinking could have very well saved the day, and you calmed all of us just being there.

I'm proud to associate myself with you, you've proved once again that cachers are amongst the best people around!

Thanks to you once again, and to all of you invloved in this field.

  4. ...

If someone isn't fast enough to get the FTF, that just means they need to be lucky and quick to beat their competition.

    ...

Well, this is more than being fast enough. Let's face it, some people are either retired or have a work schedule ( works nights, shiftwork, etc. ) that puts them in a better position to be FTF.

CT Trampers said above that "Everyone has an equal and fair shot at being FTF." - that's hardly the case with the above situation, isn't it?

I meant "equal and fair" in that the cache is approved and listed for all to see at the same time.

Obviously many cachers have work, family, and other obligations that may get in the way of them going right out.

And, for the record, I have a full time job AND a family-

  5. There are some people that are just highly competitive and it makes their day to think that they beat everyone else at something.

I think it is a mistake to assume that this why cachers go for FTF.

We are one of the FTF "obsessors" around here, and I assure you I do not go caching at all hours of the day just so I can feel better than someone else.

It is a challenge and it is fun.

For all of you that keep getting beat to the FTF, let me ask you this:

If you had the time to go caching whenever you wanted, and were FTF on a lot of local caches, would you honestly "sit back" and wait for someone else to find it first? Honestly??

Everyone has an equal and fair shot at being FTF.

Sounds like a bit of sour grapes, IMHO.

  6. I guess as a neebie I have a question.  Shouldn’t the owner be cleaning this stuff out of the cache.  I would think they could collect the cards (or discard them) and any of the things that have not moved in a while.  Plus, what is the etiquette for stuff to leave?  I recently found half a broken roller skate.  I left something and took it just because it was clogging up the cache.

Yes, it is the responsibility of the cache owner to do regular maintenance on their caches, and removing innappropriate stuff, or stuff that hasn't moved in a while, is a part of that.

    Half broken skate: not cool.

Taking the skate and leaving something in its place: VERY cool of you- :(

  7. The other day a cacher and I were discussing how some items never seem to be traded for in caches. Visit a bunch of caches in the same area, and you'll likely see these same "unwanted" items in each of them.

I'm not talking about the obvious things such as band-aids, cigs, golf balls, used movie tickets, etc., but items that just never seem to get traded for.

They may not have even been put there as a trade, but left as a "sig" item.

One of the biggest cache cloggers around here seem to be Madi Gras beads.

Anyone else have a good "cache clogger" to add to the list?

And yes, I know, for many of us it is "just about the hunt", but I figured this could be an interesting topic.

  8. :P

    Hi Dave-

I don't know the percentages, but I have had it.

This past October Carol noticed the "bulls eye" rash on my leg, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed until I started feeling ill. I got on the antibiotics and knock on wood I've felt fine.

I hope you've caught it quick, and wish you the best, Lyme is nothing to take lightly.

    Take care and be well.

    Ok, I'll venture a guess. 5%?

  9. I picked up a Yellow Jeep T.B. at a recent event cache in Ct.

We want to place it in one of our caches this weekend, but when I entered the T.B.'s code from the tag to "grab" it something strange showed on the page.

Seems that this bug was placed in a cache in Oklahoma on 06/21/04, and picked up by a cacher 06/24/04.

I have emailed the cacher who grabbed the T.B. and asked that they verify the code on the tag.

Could it be that we have duplicate T.B. tags?

    Strange....
