  1. I'm doing academic research into GPS displays, in the field of Human Computer Interaction and was wondering if anyone out there is a GPS interface designer who would be interested in telling me more about designing GPS interfaces.
  2. I don't fully understand what your saying, but you can probably avoid the problem by buying directly from www.geocacher.co.za when it's fully functional. I hope that helps. PayPal is only registerd in certain countries.
  3. I have a great idea for a venue. JHB's Botanical Gardens is full of Geocaches. I know because I was there on Saturday. However, PTA's Botanical Gardens has none (as far as I know), and is a great place for a picknick. So maybe we could place a cache here and have the get together here too. Entrance is R10 for Adults, R5 for Students and R5 for Children, and there is plenty of parking. You can't braai though , but it is a really well kept place. I know, because I was there today
  4. Ooo, pretty money! Golum, golum. (Hmm, good idea, geo-rings). Why arn't the coins going to be trackable? Also, why are they not being produced in South Africa? And for that matter, why arn't there any posts of this on the South African section of this forum? The coins look great by the way.
  5. I just send off my first travel bug to enter the TB race, and then I read this post. Now I'm getting worried! I agree with the out to sea thing. I would go for the Southern most tip of Africa.
  6. I agree. After reading the posts here I logged three finds for locationless caches, all in my area. Some took about five minutes to get to, take the readings and pics, and return home. Also, some cache logs I read were obviously logs that should be deleted. For example, one cache asks for logs of animals, and many animals have been logged at least five times, without the proper information that the listing requires. To me, this does bring down the credability of the whole thing. Still, I want to try log all the locationless caches, because that in itself is a challenge and like Discombob said, there are some very good ones.
  7. Africard: I e-mailed you but didn't get a reply. I'm keen to join the race if still possible. Please let me know so I can post the bug to you. I will need your address.
  8. I think that's a great idea. We can then get the meeting published in the Pretoria News under their Club Events section. (I already asked, so it should be cool). I would thus suggest that you make it open to people interested in the sport, and maybe someone can give a talk on geocaching, sort of an intro for newbies. Let me know and I will organise the ad closer to the time.
  9. I think it's a good idea. Will you publish the actual coordinates of the pools themselves?
  10. I had a run in with hornets (or wasps). I was walking between two geocaches in South Africa, when I came to a dried up river. My gps pointed up the river and so on I went. I then came to a hole in a rock, bored through by the water and making a cave. I then made my mistake. I stuck my head into the cave without looking first, and got stung at least 9 times. Phew, I have never run like that before. I even lost my sunglasses! I don't normally do stupid things like that, since I learnt that you should always be cautious in the bush. Oh well, now I have really learn't my lesson.
  11. I would like to hear more about the cache swapping and how it goes for you guys before I join in. But it does sound interesting.
  12. Hey, if they're in it for the treasure then too bad for them. It's all about the hunt.
  13. Okey, I must have understood or read wrong. Sorry.
  14. Now we know what would make Brick happy for his next find! Rugby tickets. Maybe someone should place the Loftus Versvelt Cache.
  15. I don't think you should make his name public, only his alias, since I think that that should be enough. But I'm glad the cache was archived. Don't worry, Gauteng has bogus geocachers too, like the cache in a rusty tin can, on private property that so many were complaining about.
  16. Cool, do you think you could post a copy of that article? It's interesting reading what other people have thought about Geocaching
  17. I have looked all over, e-mailed and searched (and I'm not even looking for a geocache ), to find out when the geocacher.co.za website will start selling travel bugs. I have had no luck. If anyone can tell me, that would be great. I'm looking to buy travel bugs. Money is short (being a student), and I would like to arrange an order with someone who is either ordering travel bugs or is going over seas and will be able to purchase them. Let me know.
  18. It seems like there ain't no moritorium thingy no more. Check out the guidelines for placing a cache. It explains everything and says nothing about a moritorium thingy. The guidelines are often updated.
  19. On publications, check out the March Getaway. (And see my post on it too, seems like there's alot of writing going on about our favorite sport).
  20. I agree with Africard. I have found 11 caches, and to date places four. Only now am I realizing the responsibility of placing caches and I can say for sure that it will be awhile until I place more caches. You see, I realise now that a well thought out cache is worth more than thirty poorly though out caches. If you read the guidelines and other liturature on Geocaching, it becomes very apparent that a true geocacher respects nature. It sounds like this cache should be archived, since it is (as you say), endangering nature. If it's in a reserve then prehaps park rangers should be called in. Still, it is a shame to have to archive a cache, but I hope all turns out for the best. Keep us posted.
  21. So we have more winners out there. Wahoo! I will look it up, my mom subscribes so she should have the mag.
  22. Must hold on, must fight the sleep... It seems like Geocaching is growing, though I only started last year. Check out my post on the Getaway for this month. And then there's the new geocahcer.co.za website (which I hope will be active soon). All in all, things are looking up. (Except for KZN, har har har).
  23. I don't know how many of you read the Getaway, but the March issue has an article by a Pretoria geocacher. Well done Brian. (He even won a prize)
  24. Aargh, there is some steep competition out there. Who will win? I thought I was in the lead after placing two caches, but now I see I'm tied with Discombob. No more mister nice Geocacher. This means war! Gauteng must defeat the Western Cape, it is the way it should be! It is one in the morning, but I shan't sleep until the year is won. (Okey, maybe just a quick snooze)
  25. So who ever is interested just posts things like a log book, pen and cache treasure to the other person and recieves the same back? Does it change how people log the cache if they find it?
