  1. Hey I just bought the same model! I had an eTrex H, but was sick of manually typing in the coordinates. The 62s I can combine the car nav to get to the cache, the compass for hints that say 'North of such and such', the Blackberry with the cache details, and the handheld GPS to search GZ into one device. Its a lot better under cover too - seems to be working quite well inside near the windows. Am stoked, although I haven't taken it out and searched for a cache yet. Am looking forward to finding a Chirp cache too to test that out. Its a shame it can't handle Wherigo caches though.
  2. Been there done that and prefer the GC.com forums sorry! One thread saying 'Check out the GPSSociety' is enough - theres so many threads under here telling you to go to the other one - its kind of overkill. Theres really not that many people posting on the other one. NZ is just one of the forum sections I like to read. Its a shame that you can't advertise on both!
  3. I found a cache once that I couldn't log cos there was no log book in it. i asked the CO if I could log it, included a pic of the cache for reference that I had found it, and never heard anything from the CO. I've returned again to that location, but the cache had completely gone missing. One day I'm up that way again I'll eventually get it logged.
  4. I just switched to mygeocachingprofile last week - love it! Can't wait to see the GC.com take on it.
  5. My pet peeve - A lot of cachers in my area - but noones putting new ones out! I've got a few in the pipeline to put out after Xmas when I'm on holiday - but I think theres only been two new caches in my area in the past month or so - one of which was one of mine! My peeve cos I've found the 200 caches within 100-150km. Well almost all. Theres an earthcache in the middle of nowhere and two caches about 100km away I've been leaving until I do a cache run up central.
  6. I like that idea of multis with virtual stages inside the area. Here in NZ we don't have a problem with places we're not allowed to place caches. And I hope it stays that way. But if theres a lot of 'vandalism' of sites as a result of a nearby cache you can bet it'll get banned - and for good reason - the rubbish that collects, degradation of the foliage around GZ..... its not a pretty sight!
  7. Not going to put any details here? Meh to the other site sorry!
  8. I have downloaded Openwig and went to do the tutorial - which I managed to complete, but kept getting warnings all the way through saying: The application OpenWIG has attempted to open local content. But it does not contain a signature. It might not not be from a trusted source. Would you like to allow this? Yes / No How can I turn that message off?
  9. I think you'll find most things in New Zealand cost more than they do anywhere else in the world due to the fact we're a small island nation. It's just the way it is - we've accepted it. GCs I don't think get made in NZ - they're made elsewhere in the world, so all prices reflect the fact they've had to come to NZ first. You don't buy things cos of the price from here, but because of their uniqueness! As soon as they're no longer unique, then the price will drop to reflect that - but then why do you want it when it's no longer unique! I'm definitely happy with Kev's prices. For me to get anything from the geocaching.com website I have to add international shipping onto it. Buying from Kev its the cost of local postage, or a courier..... or nothing at all if you buy enough! And remember - his prices are in NZ$$ not US.
  10. Unknown cache is the most used official name. Mystery is also an official name but not used as much. Puzzle is a name that isn't offical but a lot of geocachers use. So yes, unknown it is. OK. I just see lots of similar caches to the one I intend to place and the icon (the '?') is for puzzle/mystery, not unknown. If I list it as an 'unknown' cache, will I see the '? type' icon? Yes, puzzle/mystery/unknown are EXACTLY the same. The whole point of this cache is to encompass all the geocaches that don't fit into the traditional scope. Which is why Groundspeak doesn't call them puzzles, that wasn't the original point of them. Rest assured this is the only type that has a question mark on it. Thanks wanted to be extra specially sure!

  12. I've just placed a puzzle cache out in the wild, but when I go to log it I can't find the puzzle/mystery cache type. Has it changed names to 'Unknown cache'?
  13. In our neck of the woods, its pretty easy to get a FTF if you want one. All caches are published between the hours of about 9pm and 12 midnight, and they're usually not found until 7-9am in the morning, or even later if they're out of town a little. If you're determined to get a FTF near where you live you should be able to get it. I myself have had 2 FTFs - one was a puzzle one, it took me 3 days to solve, and I was sure someone else would find it before me, but they didn't!
  14. Hi everyone, Thanks for the help, but I managed to get solve it on my own - I had about half an hour between when I posted the question and when I was leaving on the cache hunt, so tried one more time....And I found the cache bang on the coords too! Very trippy experience. I found a spot in the picture and then relaxed my eyes and tride to look through it until the bottom section looked flat and everything around it came forward in 3D. then the coords popped out of the image.... was hard to write them down at the same time as I looked at them. Found that I could only do it once, the next time I tried I was only able to get the top line before my eyes refocused and I lost it. Definitely makes your eyes go trippy for a bit and its hard to get them back to normal after! Once again, thanks everyone that helped!
  15. It also says that some people can do it and others can't. Having trouble getting my eyes to focus back out again now but I finally found the numbers.... I hope! I unfocused and relaxed the eyes until the 3d kicked in then started moving back and forth and they popped out. I wanted to re-check the numbers, but I can't unfocus long enough to get to the second line. S on the top and E on the bottom, about 3cm in height on each line. Will see how accurate they are later on today. Thanks anyway.
  16. I need help with reading a stereogram to get the coords for a cache. I managed to get my eyes to hone in on the '3D-ness' yesterday, but still couldn't see the number. Today I can't even get that far. I'm planning a cache trip out towards this cache, can anyone help me out with the coords? http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1P79H
  17. Konini, Southland New Zealand. This is still my favourite cache I've done so far.
  18. When I go out and buy swag - I think about what kids are going to think is cool when they open that cache next. Most swags for kids anyway. I have one of my own caches just down the road that I'm going to keep an eye on for any unique swag that goes in it. Would love to get some personalised stuff that people have made! And of course trade it out for more stuff to appeal to the kids!
  19. Are you referring to the stats some people have on thier profiles. FTF isn't logged by Groundspeak. You're only FTF if you're first to log in the log book. People who have stats on their page and have their numbers of FTF have manually put them in.
  20. I have an etrex h. When planning my caching trips I manually input the coordinates before I go. I've found the last 90 of my 100 caches with it
  21. Actually, yes! My entry: 38 years old. Including the CanadaKate with the puppy we have the following... Average (Mean): 35.15 Median: 33 years Mode (Most Common): 16 years Total entries: 52 0-17:12 entries 18-31: 14 entries 35-52: 13 entries 55-68: 13 entries Youngest: 3mo Youngest able to sign the log: 8 years Oldest: 68 I have no idea why this thread fascinates me so, but if this data is representative the question is answered: most Geocachers are older than 30 or so. I fall into a bracket you left out Am 34
  22. I use a compass when I get disoriented and can't tell which way is north. If you're down to a few metres out and what you think is north is actually NE, it gets really frustrating! A compass just eases that.
  23. Whenever I've needed translations I've used Babelfish (google it). When I first started using it, it was Alta Vista Babelfish - I can't remember who owns it now. Its just a web page. You copy and paste the text in, select the language to and from and it translates it.
  24. Personally - the ONE thing that puts me off using car navigation systems is that they aren't 'wilderness-proof'. You have to be a lot more careful with them out in the rain, in the wilderness, on your hands and knees, in sandy windy environments etc etc. With proper GPS units you can be a little less delicate as they tend to be waterproof and 'active-proof'. Otherwise they're perfectly adequate for your Freshman year of caching.
  25. The easiest way to cache with GPS - no matter what the GPS for me is to go by coordinates. Some gps's will tell you its 3m this way or 17m that way. I use that to get in a 20m radius but then flick over to look at the coordinates to find GZ. Once I find it - I have a brief look around. If I can't find it, I walk away and come zone back in again. Quite often you'll end up in a different place. I've also found that if you're out on the trail, don't rely on the places around GZ that look well trampled - the most likely reason they are that way is cos several people before you have gone around and round in circles there before they've either given up - or found where the cache really was. Look around the fringes too - and just remember to be careful with your environment
