  1. Unlike a cellphone a gps doesn't transmit any signal It only receives a signal. I would think you don't have much to worry about.
  2. How are you downloading the coordinates from the cache page? The reason I ask is if your using the Send to GPS button I have noticed a similar issue. It doesn't happen every time for me but sometimes the coordinates are off a few numbers. I have talked to a few other people that have had this issue too, one with a VistaHcx and another with a 60Csx. The person with the VistaHCX actually printed teh cache page before they went out, luckily they did since the coordinates they uploaded were a half mile off and on private property! The only common factor for all of us is it doesn't happen all the time. Checked datum and all unit settings and they look fine.
  3. I've never had a garmin gps loose waypoints during a unit software upgrade, but they will do that if you are downgrading the software to an older version.
  4. The updates have fixed a few bugs that I noticed over the years, so I'm all for updating. because hers is acting so strange I was wondering if you have ever let it get a good lock with a clear view of the sky? Do you have battery saver mode turned on? I highly doubt it would be the unit software causing the issue, since most people who have updated don't have any problems like that. You can find older unit software here, but make sure you download the right files since this page has updates for other 60 series models too, not just the 60Csx. This page has both the unit software and chipset software. http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/gps60/
  5. I used to think it was a good idea to put your info on the start screen of the gps, but realized its pretty pointless since if it gets lost I'll probably never see it again anyway. Yes there are some good people who would try to return your gps, but most people would just do a search online to see how to remove the start up info. You know how many times I've seen people have a first post on this forum asking how to remove this personal info from a gps they "bought" used?
  6. I bought my 60Cx in the spring of 2006, I don't remember it saying much if anything in the manual about it being a sirfIII chipset. I did notice the Sirf logo on the side of the box it came in though. I doubt garmin would redesign and replace the chipset in these units. It would make much more sense to discontinue a three year old model and just come out with something new.... oh ya they already have, the Colorado and Oregon models. As mentioned in a post above the Sirf logo is still displayed on the bottom of this page. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=310
  7. newegg.com has the Venture HC for $130, it has a color screen newer gps chipset and a usb computer connection.
  8. Anyone use a Cammenga 3H? seems like if I'm going to spend $50 or more on a compass I might as well get one that's in a durable aluminum case and has tritium luminosity. http://store.cammenga.com/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=15
  9. I noticed on that review that the satellite page is showing 14sats. does this thing have more than a 12 channel receiver? I checked Garmins website but couldn't find the info.
  10. If I'm not mistaken the Venture HC doesn't support autorouting so I don't think you can use City Navigator maps on it. Not only that garmins maps only come with one unlock, to use them on more than one GPS you would need to purchase another unlock for almost full price of buying the software. Since you already have a great autorouting unit with your Nuvi why not get some topo maps for while your out hiking? they can be had for much less than the city navigator maps and have no unlock process to deal with.
  11. I use a program called Fizzycalc on the PC to convert coordinates into the format I need. this may be helpful to you. http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/FizzyCalc/index.html
  12. you could turn off the tracklog until you actually need to use it, then you wouldn't get those track lines from the last place you had the unit on. I used to get those sometimes with my vistaCx, I NEVER get them with my 60Cx.
  13. I have city navigator 2009 NT and topo 2008. The topo maps show way more streams, rivers and lakes which is really nice while out caching. This years City navigator does show allot more water detail than last years version, but still doesn't compare with having the topo maps. I love the auto-routing with city navigator but also can't live without the more detailed off street mapping that topo offers either. I prefer to have both.
  14. One word: MONOCHROME. More words: Color map screens looks spiffy. But often when I'm using a GPS I'm not looking at a map, I'm looking at text and numbers (position, elevation, speed, direction and distance to waypoint, etc). Daytime contrast and visibility a well made monochrome LCD will beat any color screen. At night the backlight can be a simple low-power LED. I'm sorry I think your wrong about battery life, compare a grey scale etrex legend(18hrs) to a LegendC or LegendCX(30hrs), heck even the LegendHCX gets almost 25hrs. You can compare any of the color 60series to the non colors ones and the color models blow them away in battery life. I do agree I use the backlight more on my color models because unless Im in direct sunlight the screen is a bit harder to see, but I still end up getting better battery life than my Explorist 100, 200, 210, 400, sporttrak map, etrex legend, Lowrance H20 and meridian gold ever got.
  15. If EGNOS is anything like WAAS when you first enable this it does take the unit a bit to lock on the signal, maybe even 10minutes out in the open. After getting this signal the first time, the next time you use your GPS it will usually get WAAS in under 2minutes. I also noticed it doesn't do that much to improve accuracy, and in the woods were signal would need to be improved the most, your probably not going to get WAAS anyway.
  16. You could just call garmin and pay to get it fixed for much less money, just make sure if you have city navigator maps that you get a new unlock from them. I know the paint on the buttons can wear off, but if you use bug spray with deet that actually causes this problem. I had that same issue with my Magellan meridian, all the buttons markings wore off and even the rubber on the case was discolored. I stopped using bug spray when I bought my 60cx and haven't had an issue in two years.
  17. I completely agree, I downloaded both the manual and emulator before I went and picked up the H20 I tested out. only thing I thought sucked ws how in basic mode the GPS is pretty useless. you need to put it into advanced mode if you really want to do anything with it. User manual: http://www.lowrance.com/upload/Lowrance/Do...61_05-21-04.pdf Emulator: http://www.lowrance.com/upload/Lowrance/Em...DERH2O_demo.exe
  18. I've had units with the electronic compass(and liked them) but for most use I have it turned off anyway. I use my gps on my bike handlebars and with the electronic compass turned on the arrow on the map screen would always show me moving sideways! also after being so close to a large metal object it would need to be calibrated(simple 1minute procedure) or it would be off as much as 10degrees. There are places you actually need an electronic compass just to use the compass pointer at all. Since the normal compass requires you to be moving at about 3mph in a straight line, if you can't move more than a few feet at a time slowly then the pointer will point all over the place. a couple examples of places where the electronic compass is awesome would be walking in a swampy area hopping bog to bog, or climbing around some rocks and cliffs or walking slowly up a really steep hill. On a unit without an electronic compass I usually just set one data field to Bearing & have the unit set to magnetic north. that way I can just put that bearing into my real compass I have hanging around my neck and be pointing right at the cache(very simple if you know how to use a compass).
  19. I tried the ifinder H20 for a couple days side by side with my 60cx. sitting in my house the h20 would get lock but would loose it quite often, the 60cx never does. In a pretty thick woods it didn't seem to have any issues at all, and actually seemed more stable when close to a cache(standing in one spot the 60cx one minute would say 20ft north, next minute 20ft south). This stability the H20 had may just have been the unit being a bit slower at refreshing or some sort of averaging it was doing. either way I was pretty impressed with such a cheap GPS, I would actually say its the bests GPS I have used under $150. I used GSAK to upload a bunch of caches( I used and SD card reader and then put the card in unit, I think you have to do it this way with Lowrance). I never did try an h20C but would assume it would be even better with a newer chipset. I also never used any map software.
  20. I have never used a colorado gps but have a 60cx and can tell you there is a great comparison here: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/Colorado+vs+60csx The reason I never upgraded was all the post I seen about battery life, screen readability, poor accuracy claims, not as waterproof, & no custom waypoint symbols to name a few. I'm sure others who have used both could come up with even more as I'm sure there are people who like some of the new features enough to deal with all the features it is lacking.
  21. An etrex legend is also a very old model, I believe it came out around 2001. At that time Magellan had a very big edge in holding signal in the woods, but if you get any current garmin model you wouldn't have had an issue. I actually can't believe garmin still sells those old unreliable models(I'm sure I'll take some flak for that remark).
  22. I already have garmin city navigator and topo us 2008 but thought I would check out these maps too. everything looks really good but I have found a few errors that aren't in the garmin maps. For one one of the main streets in my town is completely missing. near here N42 48.920 W89 38.228 there should be an east west street called 5th ave. Second thing I noticed is a local state recreational area is shown off by about 5 miles. its shown here: N42 37.282 W89 39.547 when it should be shown here: N42 35.027 W89 46.035 Third thing is a lake shown here doesn't exists, its actually a large hill in this location: N42 43.782 W89 21.110 I'm not complaining, I really love the work you have done. I wasn't sure if you have come across this type of issues in other areas or if you had a way people could submit errors they find. My local area is done very well on openstreetmaps, showing most parks, trails, cemetery's and more. would be nice if you could somehow use that data.
  23. Inland lakes is unlocked just like topo is. Bluecharts on the other hand is locked like city navigator. I have inland lakes, and it does show many more lakes depth contours than the old fishing hotspots did, and has the whole US included instead of charging for three disks for the whole US. The fishing hotspots showed much more info(submerged objects, ect.) so I kinda wish they would have at least included this for the lakes they had it for before.
  24. I've noticed in XP if you use a different USB port than you previously have then the PC will need to install the drivers again. you don't need the setup disk, as the drivers are already installed on your PC.
  25. As I said before I was having issues with very slow map redraws with this update, I was using XP pro on my laptop at the time. I installed Vista Business on here and my map redraws are more than twice as fast, I would even say as fast as with the old version. Only thing I can think of is vista is using a newer video driver, or maybe its some sort of caching that vista is doing that seems to fix this issue for me.
