  1. I submit every error I find to navteq., though it took 3 years(sometimes more) to see any of these errors fixed. Everybody should be submitting errors.
  2. Garmin now makes a blue Etrex Legend H, which does have a newer high-sensitivity chipset. The new model also upgrades the 8mb of map storage the original had to 24mb. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=30120&ra=true Don't ask me why they came out with this model, as for around the same price I would buy a VentureHC which is a much better unit. As every one has said avoid any etrex that doesn't have an H in its model.
  3. As far as I know the Garmin communicator is designed to work with USB gps units, not serial GPS units. You might be able to get one of these units working with a USB to Serial adapter, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a few posts where this doesn't work either. Best bet use some other software(easygps or Gsak) & download the loc or gpx file from the cache page & load to your ancient gps unit.
  4. I bought Gsak & have never used EasyGPS. With that said I would recommend using EasyGPS, not because GSAK is bad but because why spend more money when a free alternative can get you going for nothing? I don't do that many caches a year(less than 200), so for me gsak has tons of features, most of which I don't use. Gsak may be simple to some of you but it isn't new user friendly, the layout and many options will confuse even the most techno-savy until you give it some time to learn it. Save your money and use the mapsource that comes with your gps or try easygps. Heck even just use the send to gps button found on each cache page, can't get much easier than that.
  5. There is some software(can't remember the name) that converts the new maps so that they can be used with the older mapsource. I used it with great success.
  6. This statement isn't exactly true, at least not for everyone. With the first 'new' version I had this issue where it took 8X longer to draw the maps and it would look blurry while drawing, and sometimes would never fully draw so would always look blurry. With the most recent 'new' version the re-draw times are much faster and only looks blurry for a second while re-drawing. The new version of mapsource is much easier to see secondary roads, is very clear & clean looking compared to the very outdated look of 'old' mapsource. I still use the old verison only because of all the other issues mentioned above.
  7. I would try formatting the card and re-installing the maps. another thing I would check if i you have the most recent unit software with garmins webupdater(with card removed).
  8. From the specs of the new chip, it should out perform the Sirf III. Can't wait to see a side by side comparison. http://www.mediatek.com/en/news/info.php?sn=15
  9. I noticed something strange with the guidance text on the map screen today, it doesn't always tells me the next turn coming up. A good example of how I remember it The guidance text used to say 1st St. to 5 Ave on right or south to 5 Ave. Now All I get is South on 1st street, which is no help at all. The next turn popup & active route still displays the next turn info, but the guidance text doesn't. Anyone else notice this? I also noticed while following one curvy road the Guidance text first said West on county Y, turn a corner it would say South on County Y. so it seems now the guidance text is just displaying direction of travel & road name.
  10. THIS INFORMATION IS WRONG. The 60Cx and 60CSx are identical units except for the S model has the electronic compass and barometric altimeter(S = Sensors). you are thinking of the older 60C/60CS neither of those models had card slot or high sensitivity chipset other wise they are the same as the X models that replaced them.
  11. For a new unit I would look at the Venture HC. It has a newer High sensitivity Chipset so it hold signal better in the woods, color screen, USB PC connection, and 24mb for map storage. If you were using a PC all you would need is Garmin Mapsource installed to transfer from your old unit to the new one. Your old unit uses a serial connection so you would need a serial port or a serial to USB adapter. I'm sure there is a way to do something similar on the mac, but someone else would have to help with that.
  12. Not sure why you even posted this.... I would say this was a human response.... Considering they only forgot one or two words that would have made the statement correct, add the words 'software update' between chipset and available. You are not the first person I have seen point out someone being wrong saying chipset update, really though this is just your perception of what is correct and what isn't. If someone says to me use the webupdater(which I know only updates the unit software & chipset software) to get the new chipset update, I am never going to assume that somehow magically its going to send a new chip into my unit. I know exactly what they are saying, as you did and were just being an a** pointing out what you perceived as an error on their part. Man I can't believe how anal some people are, don't you have something better to do? Does anyone reading Garmin's response not understand what they are saying?
  13. Start the GPS while you aren't moving and before you start your engine, that way you have no bumps to contend with and can clearly hear the beeps. Another advantage would be the unit would get signal faster, my 60Cx seems to take 2-3 times longer to get satellite lock when moving vs standing still. I've had this happen once luckily I was at home. I had never heard of this being the cause for corrupting the chipset software, I guess I will be a bit more careful when turning the unit on.
  14. I know this sounds crazy but I have had this happen using the send to gps button with my 60Cx. only after checking the website again did I realize why the coords were trying to get me to go onto private property. I asked another cacher about this and he has had the same thing happen with hist VistaHCX. It doesn't happen every time, one out of 100 times probably. I haven't had it happen for ages, just thought I would share.
  15. I would choose the 60CSx because the "click-stick" sucks. I have used both units on my bike and the click-stick was unusable while riding(otherwise it was fine). When you try and use it you end up moving the stick or clicking enter when you don't want to. The 60CSx having a separate direction pad and enter button is much better on a bike, no more issues like stated above. I really liked the small size & better color screen on the etrex(the 60csx screen colors look faded in comparison). Battery life is about the same when using good rechargeable batteries. Since you already have a good car unit why buy another unit that can do autorouting? why not consider buying something like the venture HC? it has the same or similar chipset as the VistaHCX, USB connection to the PC, but only 24mb for map storage. Price is right at only around $130 online.
  16. Search the forum or google for gps12 battery replacement. Not only will you find it is replaceable, but will find the exact part number you are looking for.
  17. That's what you have to do, Install your purchased mapsource product or waypoint manager CD(or the method mentioned above). You can't install Mapsource without having a previous install because it's essentially an update you download from garmin's website. If Garmin was smart they would just make the Mapsource Trip & Waypoint manager a free download. that way people would never have these issues since mapsource would no longer just be an update but also include some basic maps.
  18. Nice you can get it to post, I get server time outs everytime I try to reply today. My 60Cx records elevation of every waypoint you mark. I think when I transfer these to mapsource it still contains this data. Another thing that works is load all the waypoints into mapsource and using one of the many free topo maps on http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ Just compare the waypoint to the nearest topo contour line.
  19. Garmin removed the D's in the latest firmware, I guess so it doesn't confuse users as to their purpose. You will know when you are receiving a WAAS fix when the unit locks on(solid Bar) to one of those Satellites. In my Area I see 51 & 48.
  20. I have no problem with photo requirements, I do have issue with requiring face photos. I love looking at all the photos on cache pages, but earth caches most photos are exactly the same. I would be nice if some of you would just ask people to try and get a unique photo at your earth caches that still is obviously at the location. The only issue with just requiring a photo at the EC location would be people using old vacation or internet photos. If they do use old photos, so what? They have obviously already visited the location. Is people cheating at multi, mystery, earth caches a real issue? I mean seriously the numbers you get making finds don't count for anything so the only ones they are cheating is themselves. If I knew someone cheated on an earth cache by using an internet photo & websites to find all the information I really wouldn't care. Remember geocaching is just a game & earth caches are meant to be educational so technically they have got something out of "doing" the cache. I love the places Earth caching takes me but shouldn't have to worry about some grumpy old cache owners perception of what a correct photo looks like.
  21. The nuvi 255W isn't water proof & is very awkward to carry so you will probably drop it damaging the screen. For the Price I would buy the 255w anyway just to get started, then you have a great unit for getting you to each cache site(turn by turn directions) & could use it to try and find a few caches in the meantime. After awhile I would just buy a cheap gps for in the woods, something like the Venture HC wold be great(USB pc connection, 24mb map storage, water proof, ect.).
  22. I followed these steps to the letter. It still did NOT crash. Seriously. No crash here either. I even tried GDB Version 3 & V2 to see if it made a difference, it didn't. I'm running Vista Business.
  23. I ran into this "face photo" issue with one of the earth caches I did a few years ago. I answered all the questions in my email to the owner(correctly) and when I posted my log online I didn't post a picture right away because I was using an open wifi connection before I got home. In my log I stated I would post my photo as soon as I got home, less than an hour later I got a nasty email from the cache owner saying my log would be deleted if I didn't post my photo within the next few hours. I never do a whole face shot for any of my photos(since I don't want my picture online), but I never thought this was going to be an issue too. I uploaded my photo that showed me at the location holding my gps in my hand with half my face & body in the side of the image. A few hours later I got another nasty email from the cache owner saying they didn't like me playing games and I didn't meet the requirements for the photo & they were deleting my find. After a few emails back and forth the owner wouldn't give at all so I decided to re-post my log on the cache. He proceeded to delete my log again, and again & after a half dozen times of him deleting my log finally decided I wasn't going to give up & let me keep my find. I know I could have handled the whole thing differently & just let the owner enjoy his anal power trip, but I did complete the cache & even had photo proof I was there but that wasn't good enough. I think this whole face photo thing is ridiculous but can see not wanting a bunch of photos of peoples hands holding GPS's. This whole experience really turned me off to doing earth caches(even though I really enjoy them), a photo from the cache location should be more than enough proof of an actual visit. This face photo stuff needs to go!!!!!
  24. Allot of people have experienced this in the past with the Legend CX, Vista CX, & Venture CX. you may find some older forum posts on here about the subject. If I remember correctly(I no loner own my Vista CX) there was a couple older Unit software versions that worked well, but some of the newer updates seem to have this problem.
