  1. Actually, this is quite possible.. Hams use what is called APRS which uses a Ham tranceiver, a GPS, and a Small TNC (Terminal Node Controler). Technology has advanced enough where the tranceiver and the TNC combined are about the size of a cigarette pack. Your cord's are repeatedly transmitted on a time interval. When you move around others using the APRS system with thier PC's can track your movements. There are also Maps with APRS so they can see what street you are on. Some even use this system Mobile with a laptop. Randall J. Berry davros@mdgps.net
  2. I usually scan the pages just to see who's been there before me. If something catches my eye that a particular cacher left I'll read his/her entire entry. Some people write some pretty funny stuff in the logs! Me.. My handwriting is dreadful so I just leave a brief scrible. ~Davros Randall J. Berry davros@mdgps.net
  3. Keep in mind guy's this is post 9-11-2k1! Many of the park services I have been talking to recently have strictly forbidden or frowned apon the use of Ammo cans! I agree to the reliability factor of them, they also agree but stressed the concern of citizens who may spot the cache unaware of its purpose. A tupperware container or some other sort of "non-threatening" type container was strongly recomended. Let's face it in todays times people are very threatend by suspicious packages lying around no matter what it looks like. Let's not provoke more fear into the unsuspecting by leaving Ammo Cans lying around! Besides, placing a cache in a tupperware container might require you, or someone to properly maintain the cache or periodic visits instead of hiding it and forgetting it. Park services and Police all across the country right now are on edge about Geocaching as it is. Let's not push it over the edge! Take care. Randall J. Berry davros@mdgps.net
  4. A reply from the Montgomery Co. M-NCPPC looks like they have no problems with Geocaching.. As long as the rules are followed for the park.. Reply Included: Dear Mr. Berry: Our Park Police see no real problem in conducting Geocaching within our park system in Montgomery County. We ask that you notify the Community Services Office (mcp-parks) of the locations, any web addresses that are posted for advertising and that participants be encouraged to obey our park rules and regulations (found on our website at http://www.mc-mncppc.org[/url). Good luck with your activity. Carolyn D. I concur. -----Original Message----- From: Bise, Jake Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2002 3:57 PM To: Sheldon, Laura Subject: FW: Geocaching Laura, I don't see any real concerns with this activity so long as there are no violations of the park rules and regulations and it does not interfere with any other permissible park activity. -----Original Message----- From: MCP-Parks Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2002 5:44 PM To: 'Randall J. Berry' Cc: Bise, Jake; Sheldon, Laura Subject: RE: Geocaching Dear Randall: Thanks for your inquiry about geocaching. This phenomenon is not new to Montgomery County's parks because the promoters of the Planet of the Apes used this technique to create awareness of the film. I have forward your message to Lt. Jake Bise and Laura Sheldon of our Park Police and I'm asking for their input on a decision to continmue this activity by your group. Carolyn D. 5. The Washington Post had an article in the Washington Post Magazine this weekend. I thought it might be interesting to those who enjoy virtual caches. It's not quite Geocaching but nearly.. Your task is to find certain faces around DC. The faces of Gargoiles, Famous People, Statues, Etc. For more information you can see the article online: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/photo/style/contests/creatures/2002/index.htm Have Fun! ~Davros Randall J.
