Interesting discussion...
I took my MGold out into the mountains for the first time this weekend.
I got a really cool case that I put on the waist belt of my pack and
carried the GPS in there. Very handy to get to it and very safe when
I need both hands for climbing. We were in and out of tree cover
and in a tight canyon and light to moderate snow fall all day.
With the unit in the case, there was some loss of signal, but it never lost
a lock. I can get a lock, at home, when sitting in my study w/the blinds closed.
So far, so good!

I made my first find today.
It was a beautiful fall day. Find was by a lake near my house.
Pepper and I go up there a few times a week....but today,
we found a place we have never been to before.....
and we made our first find.
It was really fun to look at all the stuff in the cache.
I signed the log.
I took a little silver angle.
It will guide me and keep me safe for all the cache finds
to come. It was just a very cool trade.
I left a green caribiner off my pack.
My new Gold worked very well.....and as soon as I can consider
myself as smart as it is......well.....the sky is the limit.
On my way back to the car I was thinking of a bunch of cool
stuff to leave in the caches. I have heard that the first few
caches are free......but you can stop whenever you want to...
right??

THANKS!!!! Everyone for the replies.
I just got my Meridian Gold on Thurs.
I am really pleased so far.
I really like the general feel when operating
the Gold. I think the menus are easier to get
around in, too. I don't think there will be any problem
w/size when hiking/climbing.
There is alot to learn.....but it is going to
be fun.
Will be asking more questions in the future
I'm sure.
Going on first hunt today.

As of right now, I'm looking at the Magellan Gold, in a package w/TOPO,
from The GPS store, for $270.
Thoughts/comments.......

Thanks for all this information!
Knight, are you saying that the Magellan series has the street names and Garmin does not??

I am in the process of deciding on the purchase of a gps unit.
I am most interested in using this for backcountry hiking/climbing
in Colorado. I will use it when riding my bike and I will also use it
in the car.
After reading about GC, I would like to get involved here, too.
My budget is in the $300 range.
What beginner books would you recommend to start to get educated in the
full use of a gps?
Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Finally Bought My Gps! Magellan Meridian Gold
in How do I...?

Midnight, I got the suction cup holder and am really pleased
w/it. Easy on/off.....makes the unit easy to see and access.
Worth the price of admission.
