  1. I don't have an x model I have an GPSMap 76cs, so I may not have a clue what I'm talking about, but: Why would you need to turn off individual maps. I turn on and off map sets occasionally to switch between Topo or city nav. but I leave all the maps in a set on.
  2. I second Cachemate, It's a great little program
  3. Since we all use nicknames doesn't that make us all socks?
  4. Garmin GPS 12: This was my first gps and I've had it for many years. This one I plan to keep forever even if it is for now just a back up/loaner. No map, compass, or external antenna connector but it does have a data port. Lowrance Ifinder: I bought this one at wal-mart on clearance because I wanted mapping. It had a lot of nice features but it wasn't water proof or even resistant and I never did get the maps for it. It had an external antenna jack and a data port, I never used them. It also had an mmc slot which I used to transfer waypoints with. I sold it so my wife would let me buy a new GPS. I got about what I gave for it. Garmin eTex: I got this one for a bunch of Marlboro miles + $25. I Never really used this one but before I got it I was in a training class in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and one of the other guys had one. He seemed to have a really hard time hearing the birds while my GPS 12 didn't, so I'm not sure about the antenna on these. I traded it and a couple of hundred bucks for a used HF ham radio. Then I started GeoCaching When I started I used the GPS 12 and it worked fine but I wanted something from this decade so; Garmin GPSmap 76CS: This is my latest and greatest and so far I love it. It would be nice if it had enough memory for maps of the entire US., even though I don't think I'll ever get to travel that much. If I did I would probably want to get a dedicated Mobile unit so that isn't so much of a concern to me. As it is I can get the entire state of Tennessee plus, ( I think) most if not all, of the state with an older version of the topo maps. This one has an external antenna connector, both serial and usb data ports, mapping with auto routing (which is awsome), color display, electronic compass, and altimeter. copied from an earlier, similar topic.
  5. What brand GPSr do you have. From reading these forums I think there is a feature (Auto averaging I think) of one brand (Magellan I think) that causes an effect something like what you describe. I know that was almost gibberish but I hope it might help.
  6. I don't think I would hook up the transducer but the gps part should work fine as long as you feed it the correct voltage and it's got a good view of the sky.
  7. If you plan to go cacheing on a weekend that you have nothing else planed: you will have by the time the weekend gets here. If you decide that you will not have enough time to go caching this weekend you'll only realize that you actually did have enough time after it's too late.
  8. I think the answer to your question is no, but I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable will answer.
  9. I use a Palm Zire 31 and Cachemate. Works grreat.
  10. I got mine from here Caplink. It's the only dealing I've ever had with them, but I was happy The biggest catch buying on line is shipping and handling when you take this into account the lowest price isn't always the best deal.
  11. I have spent hours just flying and imagining what this or that place would be like.
  12. You can also adjust the detail level on the GPSr.
  13. On the computer you should have a drop down box that allows you to use the product you wish to use IE. City nav. or Topo or what ever maps you have installed on the computer. On the 76cs go to the map page and hit menu then map setup then menu again (I think I don't have mine handy). You should see selections for show / hide for each map type you have installed on the GPSr IE. base map, City nav. , Topo. You can also get there through the set up page. Another thought is that if you have the 24k Topo you might be outside of it's detailed area. I hope this makes sense.
  14. They moved your entire town five miles away while you were sleeping?
  15. 1 41 2 10-3-2004 3 Male 4 103 5 It just depends 6 So far about 30 miles but I need to expand. 7 USA 8 1 OK I suck 9 3 but rarely 10 1 Friend mentioned it a couple of years ago it didn't sink in. Another Friend mentioned it a couple of months before I started but it still didn't sink in. Got board one day, looked it up, and then got hooked. 11 Actually I don't know, I may be having heart problems now, the test are still ongoing. Nothing to do with geocaching but I didn't have chest pains before I started. 12 $378us Walmart black Friday notebook special. 13 6.875 14 Not enough 15 Happily married 16 no 17 Very very rarely
  16. I think you need to figure out your burning software or something. I have copied them without any problems.
  17. Our local Emergency Management Office has this or a similar unit. I've never used it but I have held it and it's kinda big and heavy. Of course I'd take it if they gave it to me.
  18. I think the other way round would be easier.
