  1. That picture isn't too bad, but try speading a little cornstarch to bring out the lettering next time.
  2. For those interested, NGS has posted my findings that USSC 163+22 GM0519 and USSC 163+22 GM0837 are one and the same. Another clue was one was 68.3 feet west of the west rail and the other was 70 feet west of the centerline. Do I recall a picture of one mark on top of another? I don't think so in this case.
  3. Interesting. Ahhh, ain't this benchmark hunting fantastic! Can you dig out history like this geocaching? The research is as much fun as the find. Thanks for the effort, Bill. That's what I observed of the very dim what-used-to-be right-of-way. Edit: Can you explain the difference between 163+22 and the 162+57.9? The 1925 Supreme Court monument is west of the ROW, but not that far.
  4. Sorry I missed the get-together. Think I did hear about it but was out of town, either Santa Fe or Las Vegas??? Check out the this string for more information.Interested parties can join us in The National Map forum.
  5. With the exception of the colorado springs meeting all events covered CACHE business as part of the agenda. I don't normally read these things so pardon my ignorance. What Colorado Springs meeting? You have a group that gets together regularily? Anyone interested in The National Map Corps? (I need local help.)
  6. This was discussed in length in this string: Geocaching ID card

  8. I use the tracking screen of the GPSr. On the 120 ft scale, I can see how wide my N-S tracks and E-W tracks are over the same routes for 20-30 times. Surpisingly, most tracks are +/- 50 feet, but I find the locations of highways and interstates not tracking correctly. I blame that on the GPSr programming that whoever drew the map did not have accurate location.
  9. Disqualified or not, I think that's "COOL"! Not often we get "live" pictures from someone actually based on the South Pole. Thanks for sharing, and glad to communicate with the bottom of the world! Edit: In fact, I don't think we have EVER had pictures from down there!
  10. Welcome to Casey. Looking forward to your inputs. Jeremy, Rather than update gc.com files, the gc.com PID datapage could contain everything except the description. Add a Detailed NGS Description radio button which would access the NGS datapage directly as a sub-window, just like we have in this particular case for Post A Reply. Make it a larger window (90%?)with a PRINT option.
  11. Gee, ain't that the truth. I found a backpack with pencil and notebook that I was sure was a logbook. But it wasn't listed with GC!!! Shame! Should I go into one of the GC forums and complain about it?
  12. Give a little more information. When I try your links, I get
  13. Can you tell me if I'm NOW HERE or NO WHERE?
  14. They didn't have an iceburg nearby for a reference.
  15. Yeah, that's the method I use and was going to suggest. Sure wish this country would convert totally to metric! Some descriptions are so wordy that I find it takes awhile to decifer exactly where the mark is. Good point about a diagram. Quicker to draw a sketch than search on the wrong side of the road or end of the bridge. Trouble is, I don't use a compass and occassionally loose my orientation on a cloudy day. I recall one snowy (and icy) day with poor visiblity was driving east parallel to I-70 when I thought I was heading north and would intersect it. A glance at the GPS turned me in the right direction.
  16. Some people are modest and don't do crowing about themselves, so I'll do it for him. In checking the background and finds, we have among us someone who does a very thorough job of searching and reporting his finds here on GC. Take a look at this picture, then read the log for BG4463. If you look at the overall marks for this location, things don't seem quite right. How can NICEVILLE RM3 be a triangulation station? And TWO PIDs for NICEVILLE RM2? Read how he used these marks for a cache. Look at this picture for GV0299 and see why USPSQD missed this one THREE times! BOS, keep up the great work!
  17. For what it's worth, here is another mark that had been sandblasted for comparison: Edit: It appears your mark has been eatten away with some kind of acid, or a chemical reaction. Possibly something was used to clean the brick??? These views of the marks make things look closer to the description. The location is similar to what I have seen at other courthouses.
  18. Another thing, if this is the SE entrance, then this must be the east wall and the mark is apparently in the south wall where the building has been expanded. 4.3 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST EDGE OF THE FRONT Edit: Noticed how the area to the left of the door is different with a different roof line. Mark was either destroyed during the expansion or else is an interior wall which could be a possibility. I found a mark at the old Colorado Springs Depot that was converted into a restaurant on an interior wall after the restaurant expanded. USPSQN had reported it as NOT FOUND. Too bad that pole is lined up in the original picture with exactly where your mark is located in the new pic.
  19. This topic was discussed recently. Check out this string.
  20. In my opinion, this does not appear to be 4.3 feet SW of SE entrance or 3.5 feet above the ground. And it definitely is not a USGS disk unless it has been well sandblasted. NA0594'CURB OF COURT STREET, 4.3 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST EDGE OF THE NA0594'FRONT OR SOUTHEAST ENTRANCE TO BUILDING, 3.5 FEET ABOVE GROUND. A NA0594'U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BRONZE DISK SET VERTICALLY.
  21. Bos, I just looked at random at one of your recoveries. I found BG4635 quite interesting. Previous seeker reported it as destroyed yet you found it exactly as described. Good for you!!!
  22. Wow! And this is just for Minnesota, over 350,000 bearing trees??? Ahhh, this is more data than I want. Thanks for the input!
  23. Sound like you found a witness marker indicating that a BM is nearby, but not one that is in the GC database. BLM marks are not listed here. If you have GPS readings, we might find something close.
