  1. Thanks MsRubble. I purchased the Geomate Jr. I'll come back and let everyone know the results as soon as possible.
  2. I was thinking the same thing, but don't know enough about the WAAS sattelites to articulate it the way Poker and D did. Thanks! I typically have 2 sattelites on my list with the 'D' on the signal strength bars, where as in the UK that day that I had 2 foot accuracy I had ALL D's. DFX, thanks for the info on the Geomate's receiver. That helps. Happy caching! Fuzzy
  3. Yes, I understand all that. But in practicality, it just doesn't work that way. I'm consistantly about +/- 8 or 9 feet in AK, and as poor as 24 feet where as when I'm in the lesser 48, or in the UK, I'm consistantly +/- 4 or 6 feet accuracy. Once in the UK I hit +/- 2 feet! May not be the sattelites, could be the terrain, or something else but I'm here to say that it's just not the same here. It's kind of like shopping online. We can order whatever we want, it just costs a whole lot more to ship it here. Anyway, WE digress. The question still stands. I would appreciate any input from anyone who has used the Geomate Jr. in Alaska. Thanks! Fuzzy
  4. More to the point, I'm curious about accuracy, reliability, etc. We live WAAAAAAY up around the curve and satelite reception here (although better than it used to be) can be dodgy at times. I want to get this for my geokid, but just wanted to know what to expect. Fuzzy
  5. Anybody using Geomate Jr. in Alaska? How well does it work up here? Fuzzy
  6. The use of "is" is misleading. As pointed out elsewhere, there currently is nothing in the ToU that prohibits use of the mentioned program. It is GS position/contention that it does. That said, GS has requested it not be discussed in their forums. Interesting. What happens if GS finds out someone's using the app who shall not be named?
  7. Well then. It sounds like you might have some knowledge for me since I have an Etrix Vist HCx. I was thinking about uploading custom waypoing/geocaching symbols. Can you point me in the right direction???? Fuzzzzzzzy
  8. Not that I'm advertising, but if you're looking for a Geko, I found one on sale at: http://www.rei.com/product/798002 On sale for $99.93. Just thought I'd let you know. It might make a good back-up for those of you who like redundancy. Fuzzy
  9. I just had an AH HA! moment... I was using Google Chrome. Some things don't work on Chrome like they do on Internet Explorer. Tried it in IE and it worked. [8)] Good to know. Thanks again!
  10. Well, I push the button and nothing happens, probably because it's been more than 30 days since I registered my GPSr. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to not be cheap.
  11. I read in one forum post a while back that when you register a new Garmin you get a free 30 day trial premium membership. Now I can't find the forum post, and I was trying to figure out what/how to go about that. A little help? Fuzzy
  12. So.... WHat I gather is that regardless of the GPSr I have, I couldn't use easyGPS or GSAK to their fullest capacity without a premium membership?
  13. I downloaded easyGPS last night and it's so easy that it doesn't even appear to be functional. How do you toggle those fields in easyGPS? I'm to the point where I want to leave well enough alone and I just load my caches into my iPod touch and I upload the caches straight to my GPSr and I go back and forth between them. That or I look online right before I go out, plan where I'm going to go, set my GPSr in motion and walk out the door. It beats getting frustrated with software. Maybe I should just get off my cheap bastard horse and pay for an premier membership. I hear it's much more flexible. That and then I can go find the 20 or so caches in my neighborhood that are premium members only.
  14. OK. Now I have another question - Will POIloader or easyGPS load more information into my Vista? I am interested in loading hints, or more to the point I'd like to be able to choose the data uploaded. Does that make sense? Right now, I come to geocaching.com and load caches to my gpsr and in the notes section it gives the name of the cache by default.
  15. If I lived in Alaska, Canada, or Zimbabwe, I'd carry. Here? Nope. And yes, I'm a gun owner. I wouldn't if I were you, at least not in Canada, eh. You'll get thrown in the royal(e) jail(e). I DO live in Alaska, and on occasion I do cache and carry. My family and I were out for a walk in my NEIGHBORHOOD in October when we were confronted by an angry juvenile bull moose that backed us into a corner. We tried our hardest to get out of harm's way, and much to my relief, the unsuspecting neighbor who's doorbell we were ringing incessantly opened the door and let us in. A full grown bull moose is bigger than most horses. This juvenile was as big as the small horses I've ridden in the past, and he was NOT happy. It had nothing to do with us, I'm proud to say. I think he had recently been separated from his mother and was chasing people around the neighborhood. He got to us because he chased two little girls down the road on their bikes. Anyway, he was 8 feet from me, had his ears back and looked like he wanted to dance on my head. I was between the moose and my family with my jacket unzipped, one hand on my gun (Alaska is now a concealed carry state-no permit required). I already did my best to get the moose to leave us alone, waving my arms, yelling, threw my hat at it.... The neighbors let us in. Thank God the neighbors let us in. I have no agenda. It's just a (true) story I wanted to add to the thread.

  17. So, sometimes I look at my satellite page on my HCx and the bar that shows reception strength for a particular satellite has the letter "D" in it. When I went to England, they ALL had 'D' and I'm just curious if anyone can tell me what that means. I'd rather not call Garmin with this if I can get the answer here. Thanks! Fuzzy
  18. Got an email from a fellow cacher who's having a problem.... Please help: Hello, I also have a garmin etrex vista hcx, but I was wondering if you could tell me how I can get my gpx files onto the device that are generated by pocket queries. I have yet to figure out how to load more than one cache at a time. Any help would be greatly appreciated If you could send me an e-mail to drummers_secret@hotmail.com that would be amazing! Thanks for your time Thanks! Fuzzy
  19. You know, you may want to just go talk to someone at that temple and let them know what you're up to, and for goodness sake, don't hide something over there that could be mistaken for an explosive device!!! It wouldn't be good for the local PD to be called out every time a Muggle runs across a cammo'd plastic Pringles can near a church (of whatever variety) I'm just sayin. Other than that, It doesn't sound like your name is disrespectful. It's clever. Have fun!
  20. Maybe you should exchange phone numbers. Sounds like the two of you are like minded in caching. I haven't run into anyone yet, but think it would be fun.
  21. AHA! So YOU'RE the one who placed the nano with the unremovable log sheet! Ok. Maybe I'll go cut a bit off the lil-log so it's not such a tight fit. Or maybe I'll tie a pair of tweazers to the stop sign where my nano is located for people to use. Or maybe I'll just stand out there and offer assistance to anyone who looks like a cacher. Or not.
  22. Something I completely disagree with. It tastes better when cooked in the oven anyhow. My ex girlfriend used to make it like that ( sometimes naked too ) Did you know that I really don't care for bacon? Shocking, I know! Liar. I'm telling ya. I'd choose Broccoli over salted pork. I once fried up broccoli and bacon together. That was good, and I wasn't naked. What do you all think about deleting logs from your cache if someone didn't actually sign the log? What if it's because they couldn't get the log out of the nano, and just gave up and moved on?
  23. Yummmy! I LOVE baby wipe sandwiches!!!! Just kidding..... Can I add: Hand held pencil sharpener? I get to caches and find dull/broken pencils. It's nice to be able to log "I sharpened your pencils..."
  24. You can't really. The consumer gps has limited accuracy. Things like tree coverage and cliffs walls will make it even worse. Just try to get as close to ground zero as you can and then put the gps away and start searching. You'll start developing your geo-sense as you gain experience. Now I have to disagree. Stand still, GPS held level, for a couple minutes. Yes, tree coverage, cliff walls, where your body is in relation to the satellite radio signal, etc affects things, but I've stood still for a minute or five and watched my accuracy go from 20+ feet to 7 1/2. Maybe it'll help, maybe not. Fuzzy
