  1. I started laving a small FTF certificate in new caches that I set. Gives the FTF-er something, costs next to nothing, so why not?
  2. If you're on the south side of the Thames then The Winchester Geese is worth a visit (also, it's a proper cache, albeit a small one, rather than a micro/nano)
  3. I don't post much on these forums these days...don't get much time for actively going out and caching for that matter, but I do use the forums to keep in touch with what's happening out there in the world of geocaching. Moss Trooper has set some great caches - indeed I made a point of saving one of his for my 100th find. I met him at a couple of North East get-togethers and I have to say I found him to be a great bloke...and very passionate about this sport/passtime. It's interesting to reflect on how much geocaching has grown in the UK - thanks, in no small part, to the efforts of Ian back in the early days. So, I just wanted to say ta-ta...sorry to see you go. It's a shame that someone who's done so much for geocaching doesn't seem to get as much respect as they deserve :-( But of course you won't be on these forums any more, so I don't suppose you'll get to read this anyway.... Ho hum...
  4. Alastair, it's a while since you asked this direct question of Michael, and I can't see a reply from him in this thread. I'm just wondering if he's replied to you directly, and if you have anything from him that you can share here? No reply I am afraid, but Michael does not know me and would have no reason to trust me more than anyone else I guess. As many will know this is the kind of this that really annoys me and I will be following it up to find out what has happened. That being said I doubt it will get the caches relisted. I can understand your annoyance - someone not responding to a direct question, in a forum such as this, is just plain rude in my view. "No reason to trust you more than anyone else" == "you have as much right to receive a reply as any other member of the GC.com community"

  6. That sounds very unfair. Out of curiosity I had a quick look in the coins forum (not one that I usually visit) and sure enough saw that Peter's posting had been deleted. However (and please excuse me if I've missed something) I did see this thread... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=200868 ...the first posting of which includes the words... errr...sorry...don't understand...I thought the 'c' word was verboten?
  7. Congratulations Moss, and thanks for the the caches you've set which I always enjoy doing
  8. My favourite animal spotted whilst caching was this character, on my way to Burn Foot. I think my favourite comedy animal experience was up in Edinburgh, after doing What A Capital View. I was sitting in the car when I spotted a little robin hopping and pecking his way around the car park. All of a sudden he flew of and went *wallop* into a lamppost. Luckily for him he bounced back from it like he was made of rubber, and then just stood there for a few moments looking slightly shellshocked. Then he flew off and did exactly the same thing again...and again. Took him four attempts to get airborne, and I'm amazed he didn't knock himself out.
  9. Bamburgh 360 (GCRANB) is at an old ROC post. The entrance hatch to the bunker is open, and judging by the logs quite a few cachers have been down to explore the (suprisingly well-preserved) interior
  10. Just a thought, but how about twisting it around slightly....publish the event location so anyone can attend, but if they find the other caches then that gets them off the hook for doing a turn? Dave (a song, a dance, and amazing stunts with half a grapefruit)
  11. That does sound the wrong was around to me (in fact, I'm suprised that the reviewers didn't question this when the cache was published) If you want to email them, you could always use the opening gambit of "I may be being a bit dense here, but what was your logic for..." which is a bit more diplomatic than just saying "I think you have it wrong"
  12. Indeed it is (the movie in question was "200 Motels", BTW). Over to you...
  13. OK, lets stick with a musical theme. Who was responsible for a movie soundtrack scored for "a chorus of 48, an orchestra, 11 dancers, 4 mimes and a dwarf"? (and for a bonus ding-ette, what was the film in question?) Been a bit quiet, so maybe it's time for a clue. The man in question was also responsible for such musical gems as "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow", and was father to some splendidly-named children; Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.

  15. 74. The people responsible for setting the standard were especially find of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and so set the standard to that a CD would be able to accommodate that piece of music.
  16. Likewise. However, on a website of my own I have a contact form. I wrote this carefully so that it can;t be used for sending emails to anyone except myself, and I have been getting spammed to heck through that over the past month or so. I assume that it's the spammers' latest tactic - rather than sending out emails from their own (or owned/compromised hosts) they're trying to exploit mail forms on websites. GC.com are probably just trying to add some protection before any spamming ne'er-do-wells find the "contact a cacher" page on this site.
  17. I'm sure we all appreciate how strongly you feel, but I hardly think it's worth getting the police involved
  18. Nothing material, but I usually cache with a camera and have stumbled across some interesting wildlife which I've been able to get pics of...
  19. My usual letter is along the lines of the following, with a copy of the Geocaching info leaflet (available for download as a PDF from GC.com)... I am writing to you with regard to your land near <wherever>. Currently I take part in an activity called Geocaching. In case you are unfamiliar with this activity, I have enclosed a leaflet which provides some more information. Within the UK, geocaches are very often placed in areas such as National Parks or on common access land, although cache setters may also seek to place caches elsewhere. In all cases, caches are only placed provided that the consent of the landowner can be obtained. A cache is typically a small container (such as a Tupperware box) containing a log book and a number of ‘trinkets’ for swapping by cache finders. Geocachers are very careful to respect the environment and the rights of the landowner. For example, seeking permission from landowners, rules such as never digging to place a cache, and initiatives such as “Cache In, Trash Out” whereby cache hunters are encouraged to collect any litter which they find in the area around the cache. Whilst walking in <wherever> recently, I spotted a site which I thought would make a good site for a cache. Therefore, I am seeking your permission to place a cache there. Whilst placing a cache here may encourage more people to visit the area, I do not believe that any increase in activity would be detrimental to the area – a cache may be visited once every few weeks (or even once every few months). I would be most grateful if you could grant me permission. If you require any further information, then you may contact me either at the above address, or by telephone on <whatever>. Many thanks for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
  20. Does anyone know Team ARMY or The_Dravens? A couple of my Moving Target TBs were picked up some time ago by these cachers (late Feb and early June, respectively) but have not been logged into a cache since. I've tried contacting these cachers via GC.com but have not had any replies. I'd like to check on the status of these TBs as, apart from the fact that they seem to have gone AWOL, they carry partial clues to a cache - with the TBs out of action, it means that the cache is effectively unavailable as well. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  21. That was what I was thinking of (note I said "score" not "break", and "single visit to the table", so the opponent can't keep fouling ad infinitum), so a *DING* to purple_pineapple. I think some of the other answers deserve a ding-ette for inventiveness and for taking the effort to show working. JF&BF came pretty close, but missed the fact that a free ball means potting any ball as a substitute red, followed by black. OK, over to you PP
  22. Whilst we're on a numbers theme, try this... In snooker, what is the highest score a player can achieve in a game after only a single visit to the table?
  23. Cough Cough I'll go out on a limb here...total shot in the dark, but could the correct answer be 44?
  24. I'll guess at 64, based on the fact that waaaaaaaay back in the 80's I did some programming using a speech synthesiser which, IIRC, supported that number of distinct sounds (alophones I think they called them).
