  1. You can get a used slight soiled PDA for free. A Palm IIIxe. You have to search for it a bit. It is in waist high marsh grass at Colter's Run cache. This one. If you can find it. I have the cradle, software, and keyboard for you. I am waiting for the arrival of a Zire 31 from PalmOne as a replacement. Check out one of these for $89 at the PalmOne factory store. From open box returned items that have been checked to be working as it should but maybe scratched, on the case not the screen. I figure I would get it scratched the first day caching, so no big deal. I looked at the zire 21 which has been discontinued. For such a small jump to color well worth it and nearly double the memory. Will take SD cards and also comes with MP3 capability. under 100... go to Palmone.com. Good luck.
  2. Yep. Merigold here. In some instances the cab over is a problem. I usually mount the gps as far left with the window mount as I can get. I know where the most of the 'dead' spots are with frequently travelled routes. Generally not a problem. I get better reception under cover than my cache partners Garmin.
  3. Did I get it back? Yep... I was certainly holding my breath when I was upto my elbo in that hole.
  4. Something that happened at this cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ad-b73bceede7e1 Ever encounter critters? humphrrf... Laughs.. so Dorothy thinks this is entertaining. OK my side of the story. Generally I think that bushwhacking so much is not a good thing. My GPSr had the coordinates in a swail, crisscrossed with downed trees. ugh I should just not pursue somethings. Getting to the coordinates I was speared in the groin, getting a hole in my dockers. Fell once. Collapsed some burrowing critters house to above my ankle in the dirt. Fell a second time with a real header. Everything in my shirt breast pockets spilled out on the devils floor. As I watched my GPSr do perfect dive into a critters burrow hole. ACKACKACK....!!!! The hole big enough for a large fist. Taking a peak. Yikes jump back a few feet I disturbed the critter, he was looking out to see what the hell all the noise was about. Not to be one that wants to leave his GPSr in a critters hole... but also not wanting to go through rabies shots. What to do? I need a shovel or mining crew to retrieve the GPSr. So I yell to Dorothy come down here and mark the waypoint.. as I figured the mining crew would be the only answer with another person holding an elephant gun to dissuade this critter. OK.. I want my electronics back and back now. Grabbed a stick and started excavating the place. Hoping that all my bigger critter activity might send the 'maybe smaller' critter out a back door. Also hoping that it didnt have a fondness for modern techno geek electronics. the more I opened the hole the more dirt seemed to fall into it. Geezzz how deep is this dadgum thing. More digging. Finally uncovering a small bit of it. Reaching in as far as my elbow. Caked with damp forest soil. Dorothy was having way too much fun about this. Will I go look again?? Yep with a shovel.. just in case.. and maybe an elephant gun.
  5. I could use a few also. Anyone designated to keep track of who wants what.. or the help they can provide?

    2-way Radio

I have a pair of Audiovox frs/gmrs. Used mostly when my cache partner and I 'choose' to take a little different search for the cache. I do not expect them to be used for any long range. Also have them for safety. If one of us was injured neither could carry the other out. At least some contact can be maintained while the other gets help. Not relying on them anymore than that.
  7. I use a palm IIIxe got it used from the forums garage sale. 8mb is more than plenty. Dedicated, mostly, to caching. I use cachemate. Battery life is 8-10 full days of caching.
  8. Takes me longer to bring out the ink stamp pad, get the stamp oriented correctly... sometimes it ends upside down. Then try and make a legible stamp than it would to sign my name. I like seeing the different stamps and printed strips. No big deal either way.
  9. My signature items are left for anyone to trade for em. I hope that they do use them. On some occassions i trade but not very often. See them at my geocache webpage.
  10. If you have a bead shop take a look for assorted sizes there.
  11. I have a meridian gold.. similar layout.. You may be quite surprised that it works well one handed. Resting in the palm of my hand can reach all the buttons with my thumb. Now if you do not have opposable thumbs.. your in for a hard time.
  12. It seems very rare than anyone runs into a hazardous confrontation with a human while cachinng. Simply driving to the cache is more of a reality than anything. Though I have found geocaching to be hazardous to my health. hehehe.. my cache partner was harassing me about that last week. I have .. Torn a ligament anchor point in my right foot requiring physical therapy and immobilization for nearly two months. Injured my back tryn to pick up a recently fallen tree that I thought might be coverning a cache. For the most part.. I find it is getting me more active than in other interests in quite awhile.
  13. Most all of the caches I have done during the day is closed at dusk. So I would be sure that people are allowed to be there at night.
  14. I have a 10 foot slidein self contained camper on a 3/4 ton Chevy Pickup. Probably the single most best purchase ever. I used to wander every chance I could. Left the house/property to my neighbors for a couple weeks and took me six months to find my way back home. Put a trailer behind and towed my motorcycle and that was a good combination. My retired income has been rather fixed so cannot travel as much as I used to. Since picking up geocaching Oct 2004. I will find ways to make some extended trips this year. Let's just hope gas prices come down ... but not holding my breath.
  15. I was at a state park yesterday. Coordinates for a multi had at one time been written on a wall inside a Fort's Battery. The parks dept painted over the wall. Graffitti anywhere on anything regardless of it's intended purpose is NOT a good thing. The parks staff was unhappy to have this on the walls. Kinda sad that it may sway them to restrictions, when generally they were positive about geocaching. It only takes a few to ruin it for the many.
  16. I am happy to pay $3/month just to do pocket queries. So being able to do MOC is another benefit. If you can access the cache to log it. Just go ahead and try. Either way you win!!!! You got to the cache.. you logged in the book.. you had a good time. If the online log dont take..no big deal.
  17. This game certainly creates a ton of enthusiasm. Eventually that tempers with some experience. I was very anxious to do this do that start something etc. I took the advice of some experienced folks and now have a decent handle on what the game is about.. and what it is about for me. That is important. Find as many different caches with different levels of ability that you can handle. I now know that I enjoy multi and puzzle caches.. so my caches I will be placing will be of that sort. I dont mind micro caches that are thought out. Give you a reason or at least a hint of a reason for the cache to be there. Parking lot and light pole caches.. simply are a bore. So picking the place is as important as the type of cache. Give me a reason why I would like to do that micro or any other.
  18. ACE Hardware and Home Depot have this stuff.
  19. Nicola Check the Forums Garage sale. Nothing wrong with starting with a used gps or anything else. I have had great luck using stuff I got in the garage sale. Good Luck and welcome to the game.
  20. Such a bad idea on so many levels. Defacing public or private property. There are so many ways to play the game that there is no need to deface anyone's property.
  21. HI all I am thinking of hosting a CITO event. Any suggestions on organizing and planning a successful event?
  22. Here is a suggestion. I pick up small pouches, fanny packs and camara pouches for anywhere around $.50-$1.00 at thrift stores. In these I can put some of the smaller items. Separate bags for safety survival gear, snacks, whatever. I put a tag on them with a general idea of what it is for. These have the advantage of compressing to fit. And Cheap.
  23. That reads like some scifi end of the world movie and anarchy prevailing. I doubt that 'policeing' would ever be like that. Better still get active and support Geocaching with positive discussions about it. Local cachers forming together to help inform the often 'misinformed land managers' can make a huge difference.
  24. Somehow I was not getting reply's to my original post. Caching up on my forum reads. Thanks to all of you who attended. I would have considered 5 people showing would have been a success. Outdoors in a gazebo, cold, yet there were 21-23 people that came. So it was a whopping success. The Park Manager apologized for not having the electric power on. At first I could see a disaster meeting without light. Thanks to HalfCanadian for being extremely well prepared. She had 4-5 lanterns with her. Delighted to have met so many of you that warmed by the fire, mingled, and enjoyed the sandwiches, hot drinks and snacks. Best of all the this warm friendly crowd. Thanks so much for making this a success.
