  1. I tried Geocaching a few years ago. I don't have my caching "sense" yet because most of the meets are on Saturdays and I usually work on Saturdays. But when I read about and Tried Pokemon Go, I immediately thought of doing both While I was out and about anyway. Is that possible? EJKorvette
  2. I tried to find mentions of caches located near or at where the parts were filmed. Haven't found any threads that deal with this, but I probably could have found something. Or maybe I am the only one who wants to find a chance near Smilers Point on Road 74, or a cache on Portuguese Point in front of what is left of the Big W! Has anyone thought about this? This post could have been more straightforward. But Fans of the movie It's a Mad^4 Movie would help. Any suggestions for other films while we are at it? EJKorvette mka Evan EJKorvette on the boards
  3. I had heard about Geocaching years ago on Where's George . What really got me out there searching for caches though was listening to a podcasted story by local author J. C. Hutchins (his web page) called "First to Find", and then actually meeting him at the local launch party when his book 7th Son: Descent came out in print. EJKorvette mka Evan
  4. Are you an experienced geocacher? I ask this because I am just getting my feet wet. The closest cache to me (across the street on Okeechobee Blvd. from the entrance to Century Village) was a DNF for my first time, and today it would have been also if by chance the guy who was profiled last night on WPBF-TV as a member of a strange secret group called "Geocachers" hadn't out of nowhere asked me "Looking for the cache"? When he showed me where it actually was it was a head-smacker. So because of my inexperience (found only my second cache today) this too would have been a DNF. EJKorvette aka Evan
  5. In hex I am 34! Found my second cache today! EJKorvette mka Evan
  6. I did my first search for a cache today. There is a hard-to-find one virtually across the street from the gated community in which I live. Unfortunately it's on a major boulevard with lots of traffic and in the parking lot the cache borders. Since I can't afford a GPSr, this is the obvious first choice for me. I couldn't find it on my first try. I did feel funny rooting around in the bushes with all the traffic and people around but no one said anything. After I started really looking though I didn't feel that conspicuous; I could always say I dropped my keys. Hopefully I can get back there and find it next time! btw here is the link: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...02-f37b508db14d EJKorvette mka Evan
  7. I am recently putting a toe into the local geocashing waters (sometimes literally!). I would love to get out there and find some caches but I don't have the funds for any sort of GPSr. Someone mentioned using topographical maps, and I think sailing charts could be used as well. All I have to do is mark the lat and long that is given for the cache right on the map or chart as accurately as I can, then go to wherever that is and look for the cache as described. Any other comments or tips? Until I move in the next week or so, I live a block near Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and about a mile from the ocean where Commercial Blvd. goes over the bridge and ends in the sand next to Aruba Restaurant. I have the maps for the area right next to the ocean, and the area just west of that. I am sure I can get charts from someone or even buy one from the sailing goods store (I do lats and longs much better on a chart vice a topo map). I would like to get a few local caches before I move. Any ideas? EJKorvette mka Evan
  8. Still getting around, how do I delete this post? Don't see a delete button. Evan
  9. I read that book. Gotta love an author who can mention ILL (Inter-Library Loan) and SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) in the same sentence. But I don't remember geocaching from that book. Could you refresh my memory? Thanks, EJKorvette mka Evan
  10. I am breaking my maiden with this post (it's a horse-racing term btw). I have heard about Geocaching from my seven plus years as a Georger (www.wheresgeorge.com), the people who stamp and track the currency. What prompted me to actually start looking into this Geocaching stuff was a fellow Georger I talk to on IRC called Toriee over here. Also one of my favorite podcasters and authors, J.C. Hutchins, mentioned Geocaching in one of his recent podcasts (the Dr. Mike one from Seventh Son Seven Days). Since Hutch doesn't live that far from me, I hope to read his comments in caches I find. Right now I am getting over illness, an impending move, and unemployment. Then I will buy a GPSr (any suggestions?), download an app for my iTouch (even though the battery can't hold a charge anymore), and get out there. EJKorvette
