  1. Yeah, like I need one.....with a GPS II+, an eTrex, and 2 RINO's it's not a matter of need, rather of "want". And I WANT one....will wait to get some reviews though before I plunk down the money. Regards, Bill
  2. Whew! Thank you for the quick response in answering my query. I'll close this topic. Regards, Bill
  3. Hi All, I guess this will fall under the Newbie catagory (although I have checked the TB FAQ and didn't find an answer). On December 18th I dropped my first TB "IN A PICKLE" in a traditional cache, and I would like to add the TB to my Watch List before it is grabbed by someone. I seem to be unable to do that...must the TB show movement first before that feature can be used? Any advice greatly appreciated. Regards, Bill
  4. I guess it depends upon how determined the finder is about switching items or hitchhikers. The hot glue on the clasp/bead chain connector should send a message, so should a short strip of "heat shrink" over the connector, or split ring joint. I am hoping to get out to release 2 new 2004 Geocoins today...I'm almost as excited to see how long they'll last as I am to see where they go Regards, Bill
  5. Oh no...don't give up hunting in the winter...as others have mentioned the lack of insects, poison ivy and sumac, and clearer views in the woods makes getting out there a real treat. Instead of looking for monumented benchmarks and discs, take the opportunity to "hunt" those radio/TV antennas, water towers, and buildings that are designated at benchmarks. It's "good fun" and you'd be surprised how many still exist after 50 or 60 years. Regards, Bill
  6. Paper map - North up GPSr - Track up Frequently get lost, but always make good time
  7. In addition to the GPSr: Digital Camera Spare Batteries Small Notebook Pens/Pencils Trash Bag Cache Sheets Topo Map (overlayed with cache & benchmark locations) Compact Binoculars Flashlight Handiwipes Small 1st Aid Kit Cache Trade Items Cell Phone Compass Gloves Dry Socks (depending on weather-hat, rain cape) ......and whatever else I think I'll need before heading out on the days hunt.
  8. The plastic case suggest is a great one...I hadn't thought of that, but did wonder how "wear & tear" would degrade the Geocoins appearance. The coins I purchased at the 2004 edition - they are beautiful, I've already activated the first one and cannot wait to get it placed....I'll pick up some coin collectors protective cases first though. Regards, Bill
  9. Hi All, I agree...it would be nice to have a second comment box to "close out" your TB's visit. However; I enjoy uploading photos to my logs, and one way to add parting comments would be to upload a photo (to the TB log) of the cache you are placing the TB into...and add comments in the photo description box. Regards, Bill

    Geocoins

Hi All, I recently purchased some Geocoins, and understand that they can be logged, and tracked in a similar fashion to Travel Bugs. Although I'm not really new to caching, I am new to the forum...and I haven't seen Geocoins mentioned very often. Are they commonly used, and what are your experiences with them? Thanks, Bill

    Finally

Now you've gone and done it!! Your life will never be the same, and you'll be all the happier for it too...enjoy
  12. George, I think I'd draw the line at geocaching in Iraq; however, if you need ANY help getting that cash.....er, cache back into this country - let me know and I'll be there Bill
  13. I freely admit that I have no internal sense of direction...that's one of the reasons I acquired my first GPSr However, the prettier half of our geocaching team must have been a bird in a former life...she never gets turned around or lost! I always carry a manual compass when geocaching or benchmark hunting, and I find it invaluable when satellite coverage is spotty...it's led me to more than one hard to find cache. The compass doesn't weigh much, doesn't take up much room in the "kit", and could be a life (or at least time) saver in extreme conditions.
  14. Sound advice, good advice....from one and all, just what I'd hoped for. Thank you for the super responses.
  15. Hi, I...(we) have been avid GPSr users for quite some time, and have recently started geocaching and benchmark hunting....and we enjoy it tremendously. We live in the MidAtlantic Region of the US. We enjoy the forums, and glean much helpful information here. As an aside, can/will someone explain why my posts seem to have a "Warn 0%" tag attached, along with what looks like 5 small folders next to my Poster ID? Warning......hmmmm, a bit un-nerving
  16. I didn't not find this or a similar subject discussed before, if it has been...please forgive. Is it necessary/required to physically site a benchmark before one can claim or log it? For instance; many benchmarks are listed as on top of the roof of a building, on top of a water tower, transmission tower, etc. What is the proper procedure for "sighting" one of those benchmarks? Thanks.
  17. We've got a pair of RINO 110's and really enjoy them for geocaching and benchmark hunting. The map page zooms down to 20 feet which makes it great for following a GOTO right to the immediate cache area. Satellite reception and lock has always been very good, even under heavy canopy. The radio feature is also very handy/usefull when separated and we are coordinating the actual "finding" of the cache/benchmark. I download tracks, waypoints, cache locations, and benchmarks to the PC using the USGS Topo Series of maps...don't have the need for maps on the GPSr itself. Data cables are readily available on eBay for $20.00 or less if you watch the auctions closely. We highly recommend the 110 if you don't have the need for on-board maps.
  18. 1. Garmin RINO 110 2. Paper notes 3. Would like to upgrade to the 60CS when available.
