  1. So is this sort of like getting a souvenir or badge?

Don't visit my profile ... I wouldn't want to get any of those stinkin' badges. Hey, I told you not to visit my profile.

I am so with you. Who cares about those silly little badges, don't want hundreds of people from all over the world showing up on my map, I mean profile! ;)

you just got a Oregon flag on your map. :)

    Cool :D

  2. Granted, I'm fairly new to geocaching, but we've purchased and put out several trackables, and tried to put something valuable in every cache we come upon, and what we see time and time again are business cards, rocks, and coupons. Every now and then we come upon a half-broken toy the kids might have liked but you can tell it's been there a bit too long and has been passed over by others.

I'm not complaining, don't get me wrong. If the geocaching community thinks pebbles and cards are swag, so be it. But I'd like to try to find some relatively cheap things to put in caches that are also wanted by kids, so I'm looking for suggestions. I've browsed the Oriental Trading Company catalogue, and had some ideas from my kids, but was wondering if there were any popular swag sites for the veteran Geocachers. I'm looking for things that are fun, but also relatively inexpensive.

    Thanks,

I am very new to this hobby and I am currently collecting items to start 4 caches. I picked up some glow in the dark bracelets and some chocolate and vanilla filled straws for milk and I am going to look for some skipping ropes and maybe some marbles. I was also considering, crayons, chalk and maybe some yo yo's. What do you think?

Chocolate and vanilla straws will attract animals, probably not the best swag for a cache and crayons tend to melt into giant globs of wax. Everything else is just fine!

  3. You have your phone plugged into your computer via USB correct? And you have opened it up by clicking on "view files and folders" on the pop-up menu?

If you have, and you can see all the files, I do not believe your card is faulty.

To check your memory go to Start>Computer> And right click on [Phone's Drive name] then select Properties. Although, I don't think it would say missing, it would say "insufficient memory left"

If you plug the phone into a working USB port on your computer, turn on USB storage(might be only on Samsung, but I believe not), and open the files to find the folder, then I wouldn't be able to come up with a problem.

Hopefully the person below me can have another input if this does not help.

Thank you for the help, I don't know what I did, but I got it loaded last night. I think I just needed to unplug the phone from the computer.

Not sure, but I had 2 copies of the same Wherigo. I even figured out how to delete one....I am learning!!!

  4. I am trying to download a Wherigo from my PC to my phone. However, when I drop the cartridge into the Wherigo folder it keeps saying my memory card is missing. The card is in the phone. Could it be that I do not have enough memory left to download or is my card faulty?

  5. What do you think is the reason for the 150ft standoff rule for caches near Rail Roads when cache in other "dangerous" places are accepted. I don't see a specific standoff rule for places like archery ranges or lamp posts. It wouldn't make sense if it was a safety issue because arrows are faster and quieter than trains. You can't even see electricity and when you feel it is too late. It wouldn't make sense if it was permissions issue because I doubt any one who owns an archery range would allow geocaching on the range. What do you believe is the reason for specifically mentioning Rail Road tracks in the guidelines?

Railroad property is Private Property, so anyone placing or looking for a cache on the railroad right of way is tresspassing and that is illegal!

I suspect the 150 rule is to help prevent people for breaking the law, since we need to respect no tresspassing laws.

  7. Just saw advice, therefor this one's empty, as stupid me has not yet figured out how to delete a topic I started :(

I hope you realize the cacher currently in possession of your coin may read these forums and not appreciate being called a thief. They were just online on Saturday September 1, possibly searching caches, or reading how someone thinks they stole their coin! If the later is the case, it is entirely possible you have sealed the fate of your own coin. If I knew someone thought I stole their coin and advertised the fact on a public forum, I may be inclined to hold it a little longer. Not forever, but, long enough to make a point!

You really need to remember that some people have a life outside of caching and may not be on the same timeline as you. A nice note on the coins page would get a better response then name calling every time.

  8. I had one of my bugs go missing and emailed about a half dozen cachers asking them if they saw it in the cache. I got a reply from all of them, sadly no one had seen it.

Go for it, it does not hurt to ask.

  9. hello all im new to geocaching . (glengormley area ) Love the outdoors i also kayak and camp a lot i see some geocaches can be accesed by water. Some questions though im interested in leaving caches down as i do get to some pretty places on walks just not sure how to even new to gps was first bought to find wrecks while fishing from kayak. Does the forum have meets always good to meet new people . thanks piczo ...

Hi piczo,I think your best bet is to keep an eye on the Belfast area. There was an event there in June and August. My guess is you will find one there in the near future.

Just noticed the one A Team found, have a go, you may find you like it!

  10. My family speak english, Scot english, and it is very different!

There's nae feel like an aul feel an ye'd ken a aboot that!

Definitely not the same. And not an excuse to be rude.

  11. Please, for the sake of other forum users, use proper Grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Wow, kind of rude don't you think? I would say proper grammar, spelling and some punctuation is vastly different in Ireland then here in the US. What are we now the grammar police!

  12. Oh, how nice. You found a Game piece from another game and took it upon yourself to remove it. Very thoughtful, as clearly your hide takes precedence over anything else. <_<

    From the logs:

" has anyone heard about letter boxing ? Well apparently this group is similar to geocachers whom also hide items to be found. The organization is a smaller group I believe, but the game if not similar is the same. On May 2010 a container was hidden in the area of ____________ within the 163 Meter boundary of ours, hence the original and the replacement . However luck would find it, we managed to contact the CO of their cache type container, and have removed it in consideration for other Geocachers finding it instead of the Geocaching member style cache. In conclusion the false container that was hidden, its details can be found at (visit link) the container or letter box name is called __________________. The photos attached here are not the cache you are looking for.

Looks like they didn't take it upon themselves. Maybe you ought read the quotes you're quoting.

That being said, I think it's on poor taste to request that someone playing another game remove their piece for your own benefit.

Agreed it is poor taste, but it was probably in the best interest of the letterbox. By removing it and placing it elsewhere, it will be less likely to be muggled by unknowing geocachers.

It looks like the letterbox owner agreed to remove it, the cacher did not just remove it on their own.

  13. I agree with you 100%.

Although shortly I 'spect you'll be hearing from the "let them log anyway they want, it is not hurting you, play your own game" crowd.

I figure the CO is playing the game the way they choose! Personally I would delete and suggest they make a note instead of a found-it on the log.

  14. The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.

They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.

Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.

It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.

Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.

  15. Maybe someone can tell me how 3 different users can log a first to find on a cache, after all it would be difficult for all 3 to find it at the same time ?

They probably were caching together, although unless all three grabbed it at the same time I would think there could only be one.
