  1. My gosh! What are these NPS people so paranoid about! As far as I know, I'm not a terrorist who enjoys geocaching! Besides, they shouldn't be worried since none of the caches I've hidden and found were buried and all I hide inside the ammo cans are knives, cutters, bullets, matches, lighters and firecrackers. Sheeeshh! Have GPS, Will Travel.
  2. On one of our club's (SoCalClubXterra) Xcursions, a couple of members took out their GPSr's and searched for a geocache. Fascinated me but it wasn't months later and a visit to the geocaching homepage that convinced me to buy a Vista. Have GPS, Will Travel.
  3. My experience happened two months ago while searching for Balboa Park Treasure with my then 8 month old daughter. After finding the cache I went up to the street and logged my entry, a few minutes later, a squad car with two senior citizen volunteers aboard drove by slowly observing what I was doing. They asked if everything is fine so I turned around while holding a McToy on one hand, pen and logbook on the other. Hurriedly returned the cache in its hiding spot and ran fast pushing my baby's stroller towards the front entrance of the Aerospace Museum. While taking pictures under the airplane models outside, a police car parked close to me and started asking me questions. He said someone saw me running away from something at the back of the building (must've thought that I was running away with someone else's baby) He even asked where my wife is (at work) and got my personal information. Oh well. I'm not about to tell them I went geocaching although the GPS was hanging around my neck. Have GPS, Will Travel.
  4. I agree with Tomebug. Why don't we post our potluck contributions here so everyone can plan ahead and avoid duplicates. Aznaz is baking her famous baclavas. I'll provide paper plates, utensils (plastic and silverware found in caches) and fund this picnic with all the georged dollar bills and coins I got from San Diego caches. I might bring some Ammo cans as cache prizes. Another neat prize is to name a cache after the contest winner. Why not everyone bring a nice cache item to sell/barter/auction/giveaway? Who's taking care of drinks? Water jug? Ice? Carbohydrates, protein, fat and sugar? Peptobismol? Don't forget your folding chairs, barbeque grill (I'll bring mine). Did I forget anything? Have GPS, Will Travel.

  6. I call them Geomaniacs! I try to be one too but there's always somebody who lives closer, wakes up earlier, and protective of their reputation as the FTF. Its basically a race and we normal human beings are just being plain competitive. Boosts our ego too! Have GPS, Will Travel.
  7. Cool, cool, cool! Great suggestions guys! Have GPS, Will Travel.
  8. Come hell or high water... Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night stays these geocachers from their swift completion of their appointed geocaching hunts. The more miserable, the more memorable...makes an interesting log entry! I'm a hiker/climber first before I became a geocacher and the right gear does make a lot of difference in the severest kinds of weather. (I should know coz I'm practically a stockholder of TNF Have GPS, Will Travel.

  10. Around 10:30 is good. Although some of might want to get there early to prepare and reserve the spot. I'll keep you company, FlyingRhino! Here's a sample program a friend of mine made:SoCal GEOCACHER’S PICNIC I. PRAYER II. CIRCULATING : ( MEET AT LEAST 10 NEW PEOPLE FROM THE GROUP) III. EMCEE: TO DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING: ? History of Geocaching, who’s doing it (countries) ? Special projects or activities ? Regular monthly meetings/events IV. SHARE-ME-AN EXPERIENCE ? Someone shares an experience (fun, memorable, exciting) during a geocache ( get at least 5 shares) You must at least have their names before the actual event so the emcee ? just need to call them out. V. CHOW TIME VI. GAMES 1. Bench Surprise ( ask them to look under the bench to look for a piece of paper and do what it says) 2. Musical Chairs (get 10 pairs) 3. Longest line ( 10 pairs, 5 kids and 5 adults per team/ 2 teams ) – whoever forms the longest line using their clothes, jewelry, etc, WINS. 4. RAFFLE * decide if you want to have this, you will be needing more prizes. Things to consider: 1. Who’s the Emcee, assign one of ur members who’s good at this. 2. Prizes ( you can ask some members to donate gifts for prizes ) 3. Collaterals ( newspapers, white bond papers, markers, boards ) 4. Music (someone should provide a sound system for music and microphone) You can add to or remove any of the suggestions as you wish. Have GPS, Will Travel.
  11. Lars, I pass the baton to you. Since you started this thread, you should end it too! What do you think? All details have already been mentioned. Go for it! Have GPS, Will Travel.
  12. Have you? Will you, just to be the first one? What's the worst weather you've been out geocaching in? It's drizzling now in San Diego and I have this urge to search! There's a new cache less than 6 miles away and so far no one's logged online so I have a good chance to beat anyone to it...I hope!
  13. Now that's a WOW! Stuff like this makes me wanna retire early, travel the world and go geocaching. One of my dreams is to hide and search for geocaches in all 50 states and as many countries I can visit in my lifetime.
  14. Geometry? Isnt that what the little tree said to the big tree? Kidding aside, I think that's a neat idea for those who want a little more challenge in their hunts. Maybe you could also give us a short tutorial on the mathematics of triangulation.

  16. Here's an idea for a multicache I'm working on...a small mummy toy rests inside a stone coffin-like container and you have to unwrap the mummy to find out the coordinates of the next cache. Every cache in the series has egyptian related markings and items which stays in the cache to provide the clue to the next cache. I'm thinking of using hieroglyphics as clues. Now if I can only find a container. My other option is to fabricate one. Any cool suggestions from the geocaching community?
  17. So where do I click to become one?
  18. Gregarious Maximus aka Gregus Maxis shortened to gmaxis. Gregus Maxis is a character from an old game for the Commodore 64 (hey! I'm not that old!) I derived Gregarious Maximus from gregus maxis because I fit the adjective.
  19. How can I forget? It was Cache at First Site! I took a mini-Godzilla/dinosaur pencil top from "The Box" which has since been archived.
  20. For me, its more the journey than the actual destination which is the cache site. Although if the cache is at the peak of a mountain with 360 degree views, the quality level rises up another notch or two. In all the caches I've found, I liked the long hikes the most.
  21. Oh yeah! Nice to see my old topic revived for the newer batch of geocachers! Me? I love the outdoors as well and found that geocaching put a little twist to my enjoyment of it...like a slice of lime in my Corona.
  22. Now, does anyone has a Geocaching.com flag or banner? What about the mobile sound system for disco/ballroom/line dancing and karaoke?
