  1. Sounds like a New Year's Resolution. Go to Thunder Bay and get a FTF on a 2 year old cache!!! I'm Game!!! Anyone else from SW Ontario ready??
  2. The caches are starting to appear in the Brantford Ontario area on a regular basis. The caches are getting better and better as they come to. You should plan a trip to the area someday. If you do, let me know and I can show you around a bit! Happy New Year to you too!
  3. New caches in our area were published about 20 minutes before the new year. Loaded up the gps and made the 20 minute drive to the rail trail. 6 FTF's starting at around 12:15 am and ending at 1:15 am. GC2151W Had a few hours sleep and then headed an hour away to the 4th Annual Re-Gift O'Rama GC20XKJ at the Kitchener-Waterloo Children Museum, also the location of the GPS Maze till Jan 3 2010. Then did Urban Solitude cache in a rough forest in the middle of the city for a 2 hour hike through uncut bush in the snow. GC10Q74 This was one of the most memorable cache hunts I have had! Lots accomplished in 24 hours on New Years day! Met HikerT at the event also! Was a great time!
  4. Still watching this one. Maybe it isn't all lost and things could still happen this summer. I am going to keep this in mind and talk to a few friends that have boats or know someone that has a boat big enough. I am wondering if some of the tour boats in the area would be interested. They have 60 or 70 foot tour boats that should be able to get close enough and then shuttle everyone in via a smaller boat. If it is a tour boat we could fit 20 or 30 people and maybe the cost would be reasonable then. Just a thought.
  5. Ok. Resolved my own problem. Updated gsak from the online GC database via a pocket query of my finds, and a gps exchange file from each dnf. fieldnoteimportandlog macro now doesn't want to add those logs into the GC file for upload. Guess we can leave this here in case anyone wants the answer as I couldn't find this answer anywhere. Trial and error. that is what GC'n is all about isn't it? TFTC??? LOL!!! Hope this helps someone else.
  6. I seem to be having a problem with fieldnoteimportandlog macro for GSAK. Maybe someone can help me, maybe it isn't a problem. I probably just missed checking off an option. When I do an import from my Dakota20, I have the macro set to delete geocache_visits.txt I then go through all 3 steps of the macro to import the file, create/add to my field notes, then import the gc file to gc.com. After I am finished I click on #3. I have double checked to ensure that the geocache_visits.txt file is removed from the dakota and proceed on to the next days caching. Now the problem comes when I do the next import. On a consistent basis when I add my notes to the logs as they pop up on #2, I will get old dnf's and found logs popping up. It will still have my notes from the last time I use the macro in there, but then my count gets thrown out of whack. So the problem becomes, if this keeps up, I will have to click ok to move on to editing each cache and with numbers growing, if I have to click on ok 100 or more times, this will become very time consuming. Is there something I need to check off or do I need to do a PQ to download my finds so the macro knows that I have indeed posted those logs already? If I don't want to post one of the logs, such as a dnf, how can I stop the macro from asking me over and over again everytime I import the field notes? Thanks for any help with this.
  7. Ok. was going to list where I bought a lot of my containers, but thought not. Would give a lot of GC'rs in my area tip offs to what I have out there. I do look at a lot of different things when I am shopping. Very micro to large containers. I practice CITO where ever I go. One time I came across an old plastic mail box. Had some cracks in it. Covered with camo duct tape and now it is a TB Hotel. Good thing to do is if you find a container, get it ready for the wild. Put it outside somewhere, if you have a yard, let it sit out in your garden for at least a few rain storms. Make sure you have a log in it to check for dampness. Use your imagination. At times I will come across something that I think will make a great cache and then find a good place for it. Sometimes I already have an idea where I am going to put it. Magnet Key holders aren't the greatest I admit. Make sure you put your log in a zip baggie inside. It will work. You may place a cache a certain way expecting that it won't get wet, but you can't always guarantee that finders will place it "exactly" as you did. Therefore a container that will work the way you place it, might not work once GC'rs place it back the way they "thought" you hid it or think you "should" have hid it. Lot of variables to remember. There is also an online "Shop for Gear" link on the left side of Geocaching.com. They have containers that have been proven worthy. But then again, one GC'r leaves the top on crooked and you have a container full of water. Expect the worse and someone will out do you.
  8. I have been looking around some of the older finds on some users list. I actually have located a few archived caches on the site that were very close to where I live. I am setting up a couple around where one used to be located and seen in the old logs that it apparently was still there. I believe the owner took ill and couldn't fix a water logged cache and then it was disabled in late 2008. I will be heading out tomorrow to have a look to see if it actually is there still and to see if it can be resurrected in her honour. Not only that, but if archived caches are still out there, would that not now constitute being garbage? I just happened along this old post and thought it would be a great idea, but if Groundspeak has spoken, then I won't push the issue. I will try and see if a reviewer can generate a list for me. I have found about 6 archives in my area but that took me 2 hours of going through logs and finding inactive users. Quite the chore really. Thank goodness we can bookmark caches! Called one archived so I can keep track of them all.
  9. I don't know you well enough to call you a clown. You said that I forgot about "the More", so I linked to a cache named "The more you read, the more things you will know" Get it? Besides, you felt that you knew me well enough earlier to imply that my posts to you were condescending, didn't you? No offense intended, nore taken. They were condescending, berating, OFF TOPIC, overly judgemental and arrogant.....and you posted a very passive agressive bad joke by you. Don't believe me, just read the other postings by nice helpful folks with no attitude to see the huge difference. **Man, I get the feeling like I'm talking to Cheer's obnoxious Cliffy Claven. Pretty sad. OK... we obviously are not exactly hitting it off, so goodbye. I was only trying to be helpful. I can't help it if you read all sorts of nasties into what I'm saying. I agree with knowschad. Good luck with your question. Bye!
  10. WOW!! Sorry I COULDN'T help you. LMAO!!!! I guess I must be doing it all wrong then. Maybe you can help me and tell me what I need to do. Maybe this forum isn't as open as I thought it was. Guess I will just crawl back in my cave and wait for the next new cache to pop up. Suggest closing topic maybe since I am not allowed to express what I do in this case? WOW....
  11. Sorry Calgriz, but you keep taking your own thread off topic. (turn the other cheek and move on else be ridiculed for your further actions) I am a newbie at GC'n also. And now my GF is getting right into it! "Road Trip" seems to be yelled quite often lately! I do feel the same about owner maintenance. I check my local area very often. Not many caches around here but still a lot of CO's that seem to have dropped off the face. What I do is log a dnf if I can't find it. Doesn't mean it isn't there. It is all part of the game. If I see lots of other dnf's, then I send an email to the owner just to verify if it is there or not. Don't need any clues then already provided. If I see a local cache go "temp disabled", I read what the owner says. If they don't have time I email them asking if they want help. I also include that I will adopt their cache if they don't see fit to participate anymore. I give them a couple of days to respond. Then I might even go out and fix the problem for them if I have already found it. I would rather see others find it then have it go missing forever, even if it isn't my own cache. If I see that the CO is very inactive, then I assume they might not even reply. If they don't reply to my help or adoption request, then I assume they are done and log a "Needs Archiving". I had one owner that once they seen the Needs Archiving request, they actually went out and made sure that it was still there after a 6 month period of DNF's. I admit, it was a hard find but I did find it finally. So there is some food for thought for your problems. We are all here to help each other, whether it be in the forums or in the field.
  12. I would most definitely like to see archived caches to be searchable. I would love to resurrect some old time caches!
  13. I only have a few caches out, but I have already had one moved on me from my great hiding spot to a more visible spot about 3 feet away. Even though it was roughly in the same area it was now completely visible to the public, if they bent down the right way. My original spot, you could not see. This was only after having the cache out for one day! I was a little miffed because it could have lots of muggles in the summer time. Good thing this time of year there aren't too many people around. I just don't understand why someone would think that putting the cache in a different spot would be what I WANTED. If I wanted it there, I would have put it there. But I didn't! I say if you find the cache, the intent should be to put it back as you found it, as the owner intended it to be. If you have a suggestion to change it, send the owner an email and make a SUGGESTION to change it. Maybe the owner didn't think of it. But by all means, PUT IT BACK LIKE YOU FOUND IT!!! Just my two cents.
  14. Thanks The White Urkle. I did get my first 3 published today. One for me, and my two kids They are loving it just as much. niraD. Thanks for that suggestion. I was really thinking about leaning that way. Don't want to detract from the cache though. It is a great place even in the summer. But then again, maybe a great way to make a large year round christmas cache of some sort. Even though there is a christmas cache a few miles out of town.
  15. Thanks everyone. That clears up a lot of what I was thinking and know that I can't proceed as I initially intended. I will have to re-think how to do this with all of your good suggestions. Thanks
  16. I guess that makes sense. Remember reading about the 3 months now. Thanks. My next thought then is that I can make it a large multi of some sort and change it once the event is over to reflect a shorter multi. Have the start and end points off site that don't change, then a log can be signed. Can I do that? I do apologize. I haven't been caching very long but enjoy the experience of creating and finding. So my thought is during the event, start point is off site to get some coords to start. Then go to A, B, C, D, E ... X, Y, Z and then final log off site. Once event is done, start point same, lead to end point. Is that allowed? Or does the 3 month rule apply?
  17. Have a few questions about creating some temporary caches. Our town has a month long light display with multiple displays setup in a park. This park isn't very big but has many displays setup. What I was thinking of doing was setting up a cache at each display. Maybe I could make this a multi and use clues from each stop to get to the next. Question here is, since these displays are only up for a month, can I create many caches and archive when the displays are gone? Would love to have different caches to attract more cachers. More caches more cachers right? Or should I just make it one multi cache, but then not have too many cachers show up because you would get credit for one cache only? Another problem I can see, is that there is a cache close by that would be closer then the required 528 ft. How would that affect a posting? Any suggestions would be great as I should be getting this setup in the next week or so as they are starting to setup displays now. I will be going to the board and asking permission to do this in the next few days also. I used to be a board member and I know they would be keen on the idea. Looking forward to hearing what some of you might have to say on the subject and this could become a yearly thing. Which brings to mind. If I set this up this year, I would have to change all the coords for next year as displays are never in the same place twice.
