  1. I'm not clear why you use the mock compass to "check direction." The map has a line pointing from you to the cache. This line points in the same direction as the mock compass points?? Your going to get a kick out of my answer Because I don't trust anything on its own. I require verification of things. So I will at times switch views "just to check" that one of them isn't lieing (sp) to me. Yeah ok, call me weird -- everyone else does (and some folks even call me worse, way worse! )
  2. Problem? Huh? What problem? Where? I was just agreeing with a point you made. Perhaps on a larger scale than soliciting in geocaching. I don't see that as a problem though. Sorry if I confused anyone or anything.
  3. Like Thot, I tend to use the Map page for most of my hunt also. I just keep zooming in as I get closer to better indicate the location of the cache. It works pretty good and is less confusing than the spinning or stationary compass. My Legend will zoom in to 20ft which is some pretty good detail and direction assistance. The map page gives more of a visualisable placement of where things are in relation to you, the cache, a trail, a road, a lake, or stream. It makes it a lot easier IMO than having no certain location to focus on and trying to follow an uncooperative compass that only gives you a direction and not an "X" marks the spot. I guess perhaps this variation of gpsr use may be a crossover to the thread about Map People and how they visualise and relate to their surroundings. I read a map far better than I read a compass and make sense of its information. Therefore it makes more sense to me to use what I know (maps) then rely on something that is less detailed. Honestly, both are used in my hunts, but more so the map. The compass to check direction, the map to locate the cache and keep my location in the environment as a known constant. I hope some of the above made sense. I know what I was trying to say, but not sure if I was clear enough. PJ
  4. I'm with Robespierre. There is too much of this in our screwed up (thanks to political correctness) world. We have redifined too many things that should have been left alone and are now, or will in the future, cause us great grief. PJ
  5. Why does everybody misquote Teddy Roosevelt? To WALK softly would imply sneaking up on somebody to hit them from behind. What he said was SPEAK softly but carry a big stick--in other words, try diplomacy before using force... THANK YOU! Umm, we're talking about caching here -- in which case you sort of are sneeking up on something -- NOT diplomatic dealings! sheesh I don't care what Teddy R said, or how he said it, or why he said it, or what your problem is with it. GET A LIFE! I was being silly and playing off an old 70's cartoon. Or do you lack in the ability to process that? For crying aloud (holding my tongue severly there) lighten up. Have you two nothing better to do than to sit here and find some small joke that someone was implying and pick on it? Or is this your troll impersonations? Thanks for your special talents. Sarcasm is such a peacemaker isn't it? I hope you both feel proud of yourselves. PJ *shaking head*
  6. "Walk softly and carry a big sti....umm KNIFE!" Never know when you may have to fend off a croc mate. Or bears in North America. Wrestlin large critters requires the persuassion of a sharp object sometimes. Seriously, I carry a knife and a multi-tool on me at all times, mainly for work, but they do come in very handy for many things (or I wouldn't carry them). RK's list is a good start and very representative of common uses or needs for them. You have to be like MacGyver when in the woods caching, you never saw the Mac w/o a knife did you? There you have it then! Cheers and have fun... PJ
  7. Another map aficionado here In particular I enjoy comparing old maps of an area to current maps. This is a great to way to discover lost places and forgotten landmarks. It is a terrific way to learn and feel history. And then take that knowledge into the outdoors and see in person what the map has been telling you. I have loved maps for as long as I can remember, and have had numerous collections of them over the years. I can sit and stare at them for hours imagining trips and explorations. Looking for potential Jeep trails is an obsession. In fact, an ongoing project of mine is much the same as the Map Unit AAA guys -- I take assorted maps and drive around looking for unmarked roads/trails/tracks. Sometimes road allowances that are shown as unimproved or impassable, are in fact little jewels for jeep exploration. My ex used to get annoyed at my ability to immerse myself in my maps and history books thereby making her seem nonexistant "My kingdom is a Map" PJ
  8. LOLOL so did I nudge nudge wink wink Darn -- foiled again
  9. Yeah I agree, make sure figurines are wrapped good with something (tissue or bubble wrap) and perhaps even placed in a snug hard container to help with the protection. As long as it all fits w/in the cache there should be no problem. I too think that nicely done figurines would be very much a quaint item to bring home as a memory. PJ
  10. "Notes" don't add to the cache stats, only finds (smileys). As for logging multiple finds on a single cache, well, some people do it, most don't. Sometimes it's simply a matter of them not knowing any better, other times they really are trying to artificially increase their stats. You can't legislate morality, so don't lose sleep over it. They are cheating only themselves. In any case, it will only bother you if you feel you are in competition with them. Personally, I don't care about anybody's numbers other than my own, and even then only for personal "milestone" reasons. Accordingly, I only log a find if I find the cache and sign the logbook. If I make a second visit to a cache, I log a note. If I get to "ground zero" but fail to find a cache, I log a DNF. Life's too short to worry about how others play the game. What he said. Agreed
  11. I don't understand why you would need this since "locationless" means they can be anywhere, in any country, in any state/province/county/region &c. Seems a wasted effort to me. ...or am I off the mark here? EDIT: Nevermind that, I was having a brain fart. Apologies to Globalgirl and all those locationless caches that are confined to specific countries or areas. Silly silly me <insert embarassed smilie here> PJ
  12. Its been snowing all day here too. Started out as a light dust type but has been steady and gotten flakier <-- if that's a word.
  13. So I was right then...or at least on the right track. Thanks IV Warrior
  14. LOL now there's a hell of an idea. A bit weird, but would work like a charm
  15. What about people who are "raised eyebrow challenged?"
  16. Yes it can be a bit awkward at best. I run a 22 wheeler (truck and triple axle hopper trailer) anything short of a wide shoulder or decent approach with easy exiting more or less counts me out for a stop. Just a bit off topic: I was in Armoured Recce (Jeep Troop - go figure!) back in the early 80's when we still had actual Jeeps. Thought about going MSE Op but was talked out of the Svc Bat by my Armoured buddies -- they couldn't stand to see one of their own not wearing a Black beret In the end I took a discharge and went for my Truck licence many years later.
  17. Deja vu! Not sayin a thing this time Except that.......I will warn PBD about the potential linch mob hiding behind their fake "finds". Be careful where you tread here PBD, some folks have a lot of pride in their bogus stats. I've already taken their wrath for mentioning this. PJ - just west of you a few hours. EDIT: for spelling, clumsey fingers!
  18. Sorry to bother...I'm not familiar with this term "decon" can someone expand on this? My mind is taking this a short form for "Decontamination", which I know can't be right -- or can it? You see why I need some explanation
  19. Perhaps this is getting into yet another type of cache? Not so much a multi w/ stages, but rather connected individual caches. In that case I could see the point to allowing a "find" for each leg of the cache since each leg is a cache on its own. Otherwise it still seems nonsensical to me to log stages of a single cache as finds. However as stated by the two old farts -- it is your decision as the owner as to what you want to allow. This game seems to have a lot of "make them up as you go along" rules. Very inconsistant and problematic.
  20. Why would you want to do this? It's only ONE cache, is it not? Why complicate the matter. I think, if you want to give them 4 "finds" then you should give them 4 caches. Just my opinion.
  21. The only thing I disagree with is the Altoid container. I would still class that as a micro. I think the intention of the new "small" caches was to be able to catagorise/identify a smaller Tupperware/Rubbermaid container. Something more the size of a sandwich container or there-about. I could be wrong, but that is how I took it in its meaning.
