  1. Um, so does this mean they are now removing previously approved caches of yours because of this little tizzy on the forum? Or am I missreading this? The ruins in the canyon is a most excellent location. I too would be upset that it was denied. But from what I gather with many things in life, "rules are rules" and some folks chose to blindly and arbitrarily apply them in blanket form whether or not they make sense for the circumstances. However, sometimes things get to a point where you just have to say "to hell with it!"... and this may be one of those times. We now have an upset cache hider and an approver who apparently now does not want to do his job anymore. I think we've accomplished quite enough for one thread here. IT was an interesting read though, that's for sure.
  2. OK, I guess that is off the list then FMGA - LOLOL Binrat This is going to take some re-thinking I see. MAG may work but I would make a slight change to Manitoba Association of Geocachers This would even allow us to have a smaller secondary branch group called "MAG Light" or "Mini MAG" hehehe Back to the drawing board for now. PS: Binrat, love your 6x6 PJ
  3. Ex Canadian Forces, B Sqn South Alberta Light Horse..... Armoured Recce -- Jeep Troop no less
  4. Oh goodey!!! I like this idea. Can't wait to get one going here in MB. Registered to your site. Thanks Gorak PJ
  5. New caches don't inspire me much, but that is because of my location in regard to them. The majority of new caches are out of my "willing to drive to on a whim" range. That coupled with a lack of free time isn't very conducive to caching. You urban folks (Winnipeg in particular) should consider yourselves very priveleged to have so many close caches to do in your free time. Though, I guess once you've done them, they no longer count and you become just as cache starved as say -- me living out in the boonies. Not that I don't want to drive far to do caching, but more that I have this inherant need to "justify" the trip and cannot for the life of me imagine driving 3 hours or more just to do a cache. There has to be more to it for me to make that effort. That aside, I am glad I could be of help in creating a new cache down here in SWMB. I am also pleased to hear that it was enjoyed and was considered worthy. I have 3 more in the planning stages at present to help with this lack of caches in my area. I hope they will be as worthy and enjoyable. It was great fun creating and placeing the one MLKoop refers to -- "Back" on the Prairies. I enjoyed it thoroughly. My plan is to draw a 110 km (1 hour drive) circle around my area and research interesting places in all directions. Then visit these areas to determine if they would be suitable for cache locations. This would then keep all my caches within a reasonable driving range for maintenance. I am also keeping an eye out for locations along local Jeep trails to add to the pot of caches aimed at 4wheelers. I believe there is a lot of opportunity in the area -- it just needs to be seen and made known. That is my job for the next little while. The research and base mapping has already begun Best wishes for the Holiday Season, PJ
  6. My experience is that I got more hassle and mistrust on the Canadian side coming home, than I did going south -- figure that one out Nice way to say welcome home eh? Of course this is all pre-911. I don't know what it's like now though it is sounding very much the same. I solved the problem of ignorant, rude, uninformed, lack of humour, non-thinking, and otherwise very sad people acting as government peons by not crossing the border anymore. There is no real need so I don't bother. However, that said, there is some close caches in ND that may just be enough incentive to get me to cross the line again. I just hope it is not a bad experience or I won't be continuing it. I can cache at home with the same results as caching south and w/o the stress of border crossing hassles. PJ
  7. Hi MI, MGA sounds good but there is location problems for us rural folks with regard to participating in meets. Perhaps discussions online here under a new thread title designated as such (MGA) would be the better option for now? Your website idea and MB specific forum board is meritous also. An online presence could/would be very helpful for MB locals and those visiting MB. Perhaps a combined effort website "by the people for the people" may be feasible? I know I could do some page/site work if someone hosts us? PJ
  8. Have been thinking of it, but I don't really have the time to orchestrate anything with my working hours. A proper group would be nice, though I think it would mainly service/benefit city folks as there is a higher concentration of population and they can more easily get together &c. Us rural folks would tend to get left out due to excessive travel distances for regular gatherings. In consideration of this I would suggest two groups be considered, GWGA = Greater Winnipeg Geocaching Association, MGA = Manitoba Geocachers Association. Just some brief thoughts on the matter mentioned. PJ EDIT: Checked out your site, I really like the "Stash and dash" Cache concept. Must get one going here. Cheers mate.
  9. I'm not sure I got this right or not, but I recall reading somewhere the meaning/explanation of the word Geocache....... Geo = Earth, Cache = stashed goods/supplies. Now, I may be missing something here but, does this not make the term "Earth Cache" redundant? Could there not be a more appropriate name for this new cache type that isn't just a new way of saying the same thing we refer to all our caches as? Like perhaps Eco Cache? Just a question of curiosity.
  10. I know what you mean. Not just in open areas but even in secluded ones. I haven't yet been caught, but I have often felt very uneasy or awkward whilst attending a cache. In my mind I see myself as looking very suspicious to any passerby. I try to be nonchalant in my actions and yet unseen at the same time due to this. Sometimes a difficult position to be in. It even makes me feel suspicious about myself -- more so about protecting the cache than to get caught and questioned. I guess this brings up another question about the OT. What is the worse scenario: trying to look natural in unatural places or positions, or attempting to semi-hide yourself in attempt not to be seen and/or found out? Which is the worse of the two scenarios? It's dadgum near impossible to avoid either really. Interesting topic
  11. LOL that's a funny idea........Cache Bug V.1
  12. To those of you who would slam Christian for his statements.....you need to face up to reality and truth. As an 'outsider looking in' on your currently paranoid country, you should be very afraid of your history, your gov't, and its policies - it got you 911! Don't be surprised if/when it brings much more. I guess in so many words, you created your own need to be paranoid. You shouldn't get all defensive and angry when it is pointed out to you. Then again - the truth hurts! Though this post was NOT meant in a mean spirit.....I will now stand and wait to be verbally attacked by those who prefer to wear rose coloured glasses.
  13. Thanks for the info. I'll have to find my way there if I ever go to the Peg (not my favourite place and 3 hours drive) again for anything. I have been meaning to make a crossborder recce but never find the time. Back in 2000 I checked out a surplus store in Minot, near the Airbase, but it wasn't very good.
  14. The thread was intended to be a distraction for other covert activities. Hence the no real topic, issue or resolution factors. My guess is it was a CIA thread....or maybe MIB?????? <insert Twilight Zone muzic here>
  15. Aint that the truth BEWARE OF UPS!!!!! and their so-called "brokerage fees". I don't know of any Surplus stores in MB, but when I lived in Edmonton I used to frequent this place..... Supply Sergeant @ West Edmonton Mall
  16. Home key on keyboard Hey thanks, that's cool. I didn't know about that key. Not all of us are 'puter geeks with a vast knowledge of things that make the experience so much more enjoyable. Oh, and Prime Suspect, thanks for your detailed explanation also. That makes a heck of a lot more sense now. I have always used the "View new posts" link and the "Mark all forums read" links in all the various forums I subscribe to. I guess it's just what your used to. PJ
  17. interesting survey results so far, added my bit to help out.
  18. Leprechauns - tried your suggestion, don't know what you mean (home button on broswer, no home button on web page) but it doesent work. I have seen no other forums of the same software. Most are V-Bulletin or something else, this is the first place I have seen/used this software type. And all of those I have seen/used have this feature at the bottom of the page. Jeremy - Thanks for the answer. I am with you about messing with code. I thought perhaps it was a simple checkbox type option that could be specified by the owner. I was just curious, no worries. Prime Suspect - I use that feature to clear my unread threads/posts so I dont have to sift through 9 or 10 pages everytime I check for new ones. This is NOT automatic to my knowledge, if you don't clear them they will continue to show as unread unless you log out and clear them that way, which is the long way around IMO. Thanks for the various answers, I will pass this suggestion on to the developer for future consideration in updates and new versions. PJ
  19. Since I am still a newbie I don't know if this has been requested or not before, and I wouldn't even begin to know what to search it under, but....... Is it possible, and/or would it be too much to ask that the "Mark all forums read and return to index" clickable link be moved to the bottom of the page instead of its current top of list location? The reason I ask is because I find it very awkward and backwards to have to scroll back up to the top of the page to mark the threads read after sorting through them to the bottom. It makes for wasted time and is not efficient IMHO. Every other online forum I am subscribed to has this feature at the bottom of the page of listed new topics. It only makes sense to be at the bottom where you can click when done scrolling the list. What say Mr. Groundspeak Good idea? or Bad idea? PJ -
  20. Normal, from my best recollection w/o doing follow-up research, is a Latin word meaning......."square." In this case, I would not want to be considered normal, but perhaps rather, abnormal?
  21. Great idea, I like the Pub Night thing sounds fun, but would be far more conducive to those who live in urban areas than us country folk out in the boonies. Perhaps the "Peg" crowd could manage something together. There actually was an event in MB that was initiated in my town a year ago for the Turtle Island Festival. It was arranged by Turtle Mountain Community Development and the old Cache Page is HERE. In fact, odd as it may be, I was just talking to the TMCDC today about this very event while picking up some items for a cache. Perhaps I can convince them to do it again at next years Festival. PJ
