  1. Yuck...I hope I never have to report finding a body. I spend most of my free time in the woods and I've stumbled on car thieves burning a vehicle (they ran like h*ll), teenagers planting dope (they tried to sell me some - no thanks ), red neck white-trash dumping garbage ( outnumbered as usual, had to smile & wave), a drunken red neck who crashed his truck in the ditch (I made sure he was alive and called the mounties), and surprised a few love-struck teenagers who thought they were in the most remote place possible (um, not quite). I've also bailed out a few people who were stuck in the middle of nowhere and didn't have a cell phone until I showed up. That's what makes it an adventure every time...the unknown.
  2. Totally off the topic but...OMG! Did you really take this picture? Makes my entire collection of snaps look like a bunch of tripe filled rubbish bins. Bloody amazing country...too bad it's 9823.7 miles from here. Thanks to everyone who replied to my post...all useful information - this forum is the best. Case has been ordered from the "geek".
  3. Thanks for the reply. Does the case allow you to use the rocker without hitting other buttons? I was hoping someone with a "geek" case would post...I had seen the case on their site but it doesn't list the 76cs so I thought it would be too small as well. But it looks like you and Tex Shadow like them just fine. The antenna is not a big deal; I just want the case to protect the thing while stumbling about in the woods.
  4. Ordered one last night at the "old" price of $19.49 USD. Wonder how much longer they'll be selling at this price? Glad I read this topic.
  5. Thanks for the suggestion, already had an email back from Greg. He said they have an allowable tolerance of manufacturing and my case seems to be on the lower end of that spec. They really need a purpose-built case for the 76cs, otherwise more of these will be inadvertantly sold and some just won't fit. Plus the 76cs is selling by the ton!
  6. As long as the snow isn't too deep, the lack of foliage and ground cover is a big help. Just imagine you're looking for the same cache in August, covered in sweat, as mosquitos bite every inch of exposed flesh...see, winter caching ain't so bad now, is it?
  7. To see what kind of detail the maps provide, for a Garmin, go to this link and click on the selector box under "Map Source Map Viewer". Pick a map (US Topo East, for example) and a pop-up window appears that allows you to see the same details that the map will give you on a Garmin GPS. Just keep zooming in to your area of interest. Hope this helps.
  8. I just received my 76cs and it's pure eye candy. Wanting to protect this little gem, I ordered a neoprene "glove" type case that the vendor thought would fit. Unfortunately the 76cs is a bit chunkier than the 76 (0.2" thicker) and the case is like a "full figured" woman in hot pants. The rocker button is very difficult to use since the plastic window is stretched too tight. Any 76cs owners out there that have found a good case of this style made specifically for this unit? I searched the forums here and googled without luck. Thanks all.
  9. When you place a cache and fill it up with swag, it's with the understanding that you'll probably never see the stuff again. If a cache placer wants "quality" trades, they should go to a pawn shop, not put their treasures in the woods. To single out people who make the effort to visit your cache and ridicule them about their trades is stupid and wrong. It's too bad we can't vote such people off the island...they really don't belong in the game.
  10. If someone places a webcam that takes images of a public area there is no obligation to ask for permission to use the images - after all, the cam owner is not asking every person who goes by if they have their consent to use their photo. Some people would probably prefer not to be seen!
  11. Kinda late posting to this topic but .... My neighbour's house was broken into and they took anything of value that was small and portable. This brings up our treasured GPS'r ...any cretin can pilfer it and use it to their hearts content. How hard would it be to add a lock code (program it yourself for a combination or series of button presses) to these units? The "owner" splash screen is of use only if your unit is found by an honest person.
  12. Olympus C-700 Ultra Zoom (10x optical). Obsolete now but it still takes great pictures. I've taken it everywhere in the woods with me, in blazing heat and freezing cold, with no problems. A proper case makes the difference - a LowePro. The Camera The Picture See more like this one at...My Webpage
  13. From the GPSGeek ebay store... "Seller's payment instructions We gladly accept Visa/MasterCard/Amex via www.paypal.com (recipient: sales@gpsgeek.com) or directly at 510-940-7777. (M-F 9 am to 4 pm Pacific). If sending money order/check, please make it payable to "GILSSON" and send it to 2576 Barrington Court, Hayward, CA 94545 USA. Thanks for your business!!" I'd say it's the same outfit...
  14. Very nice. Is it waterproof? Where did you buy it? Thanks.
  15. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll try the Fusion on my fine Chinese plastic. Hopefully it won't chemically react and spontaneously combust.
  16. If you consider such a painful pastime a "hobby", you'll love geocaching!
  17. I bought a couple of small plastic ammo boxes that are waterproof but gawdawful shades of red and yellow. Has anyone used Fusion spraypaint on plastic cache-tainers? It would be a lot easier than camo tape but I'm wondering how it will hold up to the elements. Cheers.
  18. He must be dating an "Austin Powers" type Fembot....oh, behave!
  19. Here is a link to Ozi 3d that shows all the digital elevation formats that are supported. I bought ETopo maps (for here in Canada) and they are pre-calibrated for use with Memory Map. Under the "Help" - "Contents" - "Getting Started" menu of Memory Map there is a section called "Obtaining Digital Charts or Maps" that lists the various types that are supported. As far as digital maps for Saudi Arabia your only choice is to look for them with a good search engine and a lot of patience. Best of luck.
  20. Thanks Sputnik! I had no idea nRoute existed until I read your post...and it's FREE! I downloaded it and now I can't wait to try it out with my mapsource & Vista. It really pays to read these forums.
  21. This may be a silly question, but...when you say "car charger" you do mean a Garmin power adapter specifically for the Vista? The eTrex line is very particular about the voltage levels from external supplies. Anything above 3.3 volts is too much. Just thought I'd ask since nothing else is working.
  22. Have you tried a Staedtler Lumocolor? They will mark on virtually anything and they are made in Germany...you should be able to find them without too much trouble. They have a finer point than a Sharpie and last a long time.
  23. We use geeky lingo? Why do you call an ultracool bike like a GSX-R a "Jixxer"???
  24. I prefer OziExplorer to Memory Map because the 3d features of Ozi use free digital elevation data. Memory Map has a non-standard protocol so you have to buy the elevation data from them. That's my only beef with Memory Map; the "stitching" feature that allows you to patch one map to another works very well. The interface isn't as easy to figure out as Ozi but it works once you get used to it. Digital topo maps are available from most places that sell gps units. Depending on which country you live in, some maps are provided free on-line by government agencies.
  25. I have a Vista and it's a great unit but... the buttons are so tiny and hard to press it's quite difficult to use in cold weather. Likewise the click-stick pseudo mouse control can be quite frustrating if you don't press it just right. I've accidentally deleted things when I was trying to exit a menu I didn't want. But it's the best unit around if you want ultimate portability. It's so handy and small I never go into the woods without it. Like RK said the antenna on the 76 works better and the buttons are all on the front making them easy to use. Try them both out if you can and pick the one that feels best in your hands.
