  1. At a recent family gathering our 6yo nephew was entertaining himself by rolling a golf ball (no, it didn't come from a cache ) off of the backyard deck, then running down to the yard to retrieve it. After several iterations of this he returned to the deck with a pouty look on his face and no golf ball in hand. He said it was lost. He wasn't rolling the ball off the deck very hard so we figured it had to be in the leaves nearby. The yard hadn't been raked recently so there were leaves everywhere. A few of us went down to the yard and began searching. Several minutes went by with no sign of the golf ball. My searching companions gave up after a while and decided it would be more fun to watch me search from on the deck above. Rather than kick the leaves all over the place I went into "cache searching" mode (i.e. search with my eyes only). Sure enough after a few minutes of this I spotted a tiny section of the golf ball under a leaf. My brother-in-law's first reaction was "No surprise. You're a geocacher. You're trained for this sort of thing". Geocaching has taught me lots of things, one of them being a keener sense of observation. Agreed? Have any of your own stories to share?
  2. We say leave them be, ...especially since we haven't had a chance to get up to your area and do more of your fine caches!
  3. I am fortunate to live in an area where there are lots of great puzzle caches. I have many favorites but the hermit crabs' Scatter-brained Crab had a huge "wow" factor when I eventually figured out the solution. Wonderfully creative!
  4. If a villain gets caught by Spidey you could transfer the villain's ownership to the cacher who made it happen. Then the new villain owner could set a new mission for the villain.
  5. The window sill over your kitchen sink is full of trinkets you've found in caches.
  6. US $1 coins (the new presidential series is cool) foreign coins mini carabiners matchbox-type cars (i buy in bulk at yard sales) plastic animals (another yard sale score) geocaching wrist bands (not low cost, but cool swag) mini pens and pencils
  7. - Check for ticks, regardless of the time of year. - Group caching is a blast. - Search primarily with your eyes to minimize impact on landscape around GZ. - Be aware of local hunting regulations. - There is a waterfall in my town! - How valuable a compass is.
  8. Our first gpsR was named Bilbo. Our current gpsR is Frodo.
  9. Many thanks to g-o-cashers for putting these lists together, and to all those who have contributed info! The information collected has been very valuable to me. I will most likely purchase a Colorado at some point but for now I'm going to hold off.
  10. Otis is not only my caching partner, he's also a cache owner: K9 Walkabout (by Otis). He's trackable too.
  11. Ditto! Some of my closest caching friends are a result of many email exchanges regarding each other's caches. I enjoy corresponding with cachers who are working on my puzzle caches. I've provided everything from slight nudges to total spoilers, when asked. If a cacher is interested in solving any of my puzzle caches, or getting through any of my multi caches, I have no problem helping them along. I inherited this attitude from many of our local cache hiders. They have always been willing to provide a nudge or verify an approach I'm taking when asked. FTF is a different story though. As someone who enjoys solving cache puzzles (and creating them) I respect a cache owner's wish to not give out hints/nudges/etc prior to FTF. tony (1/4 GOTJ)
  12. Not on our watchlist but it's been on our todo list for quite some time. Hoping to check it out soon. The Depot
  13. We got Otis a trackable geo-dog coin for caching/hiking.
  14. A few of our caches are based on some of our hobbies/passions: My son and I enjoy a good game of chess so we created Tour de Equus. I'm a pinball enthusiast (aka pinhead) so I created Bumper Cache. We're all big Lord Of The Rings/Tolkien fans which inspired The Road to Mt. Doom. Our love of dogs inspired our newest multi-cache, K9 Walkabout. Finding Nano came from our love for fresh water fishing. We combined our love of humor, with the puzzle geek in me, and my wife's passion for writing, to come up with Reveal Parmesan. We're hoping to release a sequel at some point. Now to figure out how to create a cache based on another passion of ours, ...local microbrew appreciation!
  15. Book Buddies in Concord, MA. My favorite book-themed cache is DAVID'S TOME, also in Concord, MA. Not exactly the same idea but very cool indeed.
  16. This one (GCR8RQ) has been in place for nearly 2 years. It's had its share of issues, partly because of the style of cache, but it's still active and I'm looking forward to getting to it next time I'm in Boston.
  17. Late fall through late winter, for many of the reasons already touched upon. No bugs (well, almost no bugs), fewer muggles, less tree cover, quite peaceful (especially after a fresh snowfall).
  18. My son's love for parmesan cheese is what prompted us to place this cache. To answer the OPs question, ...you can't go wrong with ammo cans. They're easy to spray paint too!
  19. 3.7 mi. I don't have much interest in how big my cleared radius is though. It's nice to have caches nearby when I get the itch and don't have the time to get to one that's far away. Why not walk?
  20. Found it Thanks Where did you find it? thanks, tony
  21. We adopted Otis from a local animal shelter a couple of months ago. I think he's going to enjoy caching.
