  1. I have to keep sound muted so I'd prefer a little ammo-can icon in place of the envelope icon.
  2. Garmin Etrex (Samwise) Garmin 60CS (Bilbo) Garmin 60CSX (Frodo) Geomate Jr (Still trying to think of a name) The 60CSX is my serious caching tool. The Geomate Jr. was well worth the small price tag. It's very accurate (even under heavy cover) and is great for those spontaneous caching moments.
  3. Definitely see some similarities between Sammy and Otis. Otis is from Virginia (rescued by SouthSide SPCA). I ironed the "cacher" patch onto a standard blaze-orange dog vest. The patch came from thecachingplaceDOTcom.
  4. Otis is my caching buddy. If I mention the word "caching" or grab his "cacher" vest (he looks too much like a small deer to take any chances) he immediately goes into wiggle-mode! When we get near GZ I tell him to "find the cache". There have been a few occasions where he actually has found it for me. Also, when we're out for a non-caching walk we often walk past some of our caches. Without hesitation he'll just stroll over to where the cache is hidden and give it a sniff or two, ...almost to say "just checking to make sure it's still there! Most of the trails around our way are safe for off-leash caching but I always have the leash with me just in case. I always keep a pocket full of treats as well, and usually one good-sized treat to keep him busy while I'm logging the cache.
  5. It's much cheaper to just add a little slip of paper with the standard decryption method to your geocaching bag. If you want to be fancy, you can laminate it. Or add it as a note in your cell phone (or gpsR).
  6. I believe it will be available the last week of August, but you can email Warren through his geocaching.com account and ask him. He's been very helpful with all the Geomate.jr questions I've thrown at him.
  7. Great idea. Would love to see it happen.
  8. I got a similar email from Emily Heller (NEFF). I ended up volunteering to "monitor" the Groton Place cache. There was no mention of adoption though. I'm pretty certain NEFF will be posting something in the NE forum soon.
  9. When we started caching, almost 5 years ago, my son was 13. His interest peaked during that first year but began to fade as the novelty wore off. I quickly realized that neither my son nor my wife were as hooked as I was. There are a few things I do now to keep him (and sometimes my wife) involved: - When I go out for a cache that's in an interesting location and/or includes a nice hike I take my wife and son back there when we have some free time. That is, I do the recon and only take them to the ones I think they would be interested in. - If I see a trading item that I think my son (or wife) might like I'll trade for it and bring it home to them. If they don't want it, it goes right back into my swag bag. - My son is into puzzles, math, computers, etc. so when I find a puzzle cache that I think he may be interested in we work on it together. He'll sometimes insist on me waiting to do the final on a good puzzle cache simply because he enjoyed the puzzle and its solution. - When I'm designing a new cache I always ask my wife and son for their opinions. They've both contributed quite a bit to the contents of my cache pages and puzzles. - I talk "cache" at the dinner table some times. When I see my son and wife roll their eyes at each other I know it's time to change the subject.
  10. During peak tick season I always have a roll of cellophane tape (e.g. Scotch). The tape works great for grabbing the ticks off my clothes, and I can count how many I nabbed at the end of the hike.
  11. Check out this topic in the New England forum. Specifically, check out g-o-cashers' link to his PQ in post #5. I find it useful under our current conditions. Of course it's raining and in the 40's today, and we're getting more of the same this coming weekend so the snow piles are melting away as I type.
  12. __________ Otis Otis is a Lab/Shepherd/Miniature Schnauzer/Italian Greyhound mix. Check out the gallery on Otis' cache (K9 Walkabout) for more geo-pet pics.
  13. I'd just like to clarify that it wasn't the publisher who released the magazine as a travelbug. It was me. I purchased two copies of the premier issue. One to keep for myself and one to send out as a TB. I was planning to do this with future issues but it appears that isn't going to happen any time soon.
  14. Put everything into the container and hide it somewhere. Then give your friend a card/email/etc with the coordinates to the gift.
  15. I don't avoid searching for caches in stone walls (regardless of cache size). I do have respect for these old walls though, so I have a specific method for searching stone walls. I use a combination of searching with my eyes (and flashlight if necessary) and poking around with my hiking stick. I will only move a rock if I've found the cache and the rock needs to be moved to access the container. Sure I end up with a DNF every now and then, but I'd much rather write up a DNF log than ruin a 200+ year old stone wall.
  16. Otis is part Lab, German Shepherd, Miniature Schnauzer, and a touch of Italian Greyhound. He loves to cache! After a long fetch session. Showing off his geocoin.
  17. I usually drop down into the specific forum that I think will have what I'm looking for. Then I use the plus sign "+" if I'm searching for more than one term. For example, if I want to find threads that discuss kayak caching in Massachusetts I would go into the New England forum then I'd put "+kayak +Massachusetts" in the search window.
  18. Activated 5 this morning. Will be hitting the trails with them soon.
  19. Got mine yesterday. Very nice coin! ...and I can read the tracking numbers without my glasses! Will be releasing some into caches very soon. Thanks, T"n"T!
  20. Eight Foot Llama deserves the kudos on this. He mentioned this "alternative" method after I told him that the "Update home coordinates" method had been changed. Thanks, EFL!
  21. I used to use the "Update home coordinates" link under "My Account Details" but, as others have mentioned, that option no longer exists. Recently I learned that I can get the same coordinates by going to "Set Up Notifications," "Create a New Notification," and "Look up Postal Code." I tried this for several area zip codes and got the same coordinates I had originally obtained via the "Update home coordinates". The only change I made to my GZ puzzle cache was to add a non-encrypted hint notifying cachers that they can email me if they want to know how to obtain the necessary GZ coordinates.
