  1. You need to load the maps via mapsource which will compile the maps into a mapset. Individual files can't be entered directly into the 60csx.
  2. I'd say 5 stars. It would be a "serious mental challenge" to convince myself to touch anything that looked explosive. I wouldn't go near anything in that picture! The cache is on a base. It's very unlikely that it would be esplody. I dont think it looks explosive. Its just some aircraft parts. but its in an area that had nothing but aircraft and car and truck parts for almost a mile. Although they have cleaned up the area there are still alot of left over parts. You may post this over at MAGC too. Many of us have been to Iraq and can tell you how we would look at this type of hide. I know there were scrap areas in my AO I wouldn't move anything in, we would get mortared on a daily basis and sometimes it would be days before we found the duds. Other areas were rather safe because of the location, no access to the locals and outside of mortar range.
  3. If I really thought they were "dissing" our armed forces, I would jump ship in a sec. There is a whole other thread on that subject so I won't go into it here, except to say I do not believe the rule on caches with an agenda is "dissing" any caches disallowed by it. I've had a while to think about what does bother me, and more then anything it is the sponsorship thing. If I decided to join their website, and use it, I guess it wouldn't bother me to have to get a sponsor. However, asking someone to sponsor you, just so you can check it out to see if you even want to join feels uncomfortable. (and maybe even a little elitist.) Sorry but I must disagree with your assessment. I take it as "dissing" when a specific organization is singled out. If they would of just said that promoting "troop support" was against guidelines just like any other agenda I may of followed your thinking but when they are told to specifically flag any cache that mentions "Support the Troops" I take that as MAJOR dissing.
  4. Jeremy's answer wasn't much help either. What course? Where? By Whom? Many new features go online and you have to go through a series of hoops to even find out about them. I understand keeping some under wraps so you don't get the "Are we there yet?" posts to a minimum, but once the cats out of the bag...give up the info!
  5. Yes, it starts out that way, but will give you mapsource without the detailed maps (after updates) with which you can then load these maps into. Edit to add: Not sure about the MAC part.
  6. On most web browsers all you have to do is hover above your user name and the link will appear on the bottom left with the user number too (so you don't have to leave the forums ).
  7. Short answer is you can't. The 60 csx treats the POI differently than a waypoint which you can change on the fly.
  8. First make sure your poi file is in the right place (USA_and_Canada directory for me). Then check to see that the "geocache" poi is checked off in the poi settings. Also make sure that the poi and the icon have the same name ie geocache.ov2 and geocache.bmp (caps count) so it shows up on the map. Oh YES! I did it! Thanks so much! I realize now that I did not send the filet to the right place on the tomtom drive. This always happens to me - I make some small error, but then suddenly I see the light! Happy geocaching! CCC in Fort Worth,TX Heh, heh, been there! That is how you gain experience with this gadgets. Happy Trails.

  10. I took advantage of the price for my 1G cards and now all I have to do is switch cards when I am in different parts of the country (both streets and topo loaded). It sure saves time when you do mapsets like that, when some of the free maps get finished I plan on doing the same thing with 2G cards because the mapsets will be a little bigger with all that info loaded and may then need bigger than the 1G card.
  11. Can you post some screen shots? I may have a use for this. Posted two screenshots on that map page. I think a map with more detail would be nicer but since I haven't been to Afghanistan and may never get there there is no way for me to know. Actually it's not bad, will definately be better than the basemap. Thanks for posting it.
  12. Try downloading to the same location, it may pickup where it left off. I had to do this about three times for the US map and that was only 900+ Megs.
  13. Can you post some screen shots? I may have a use for this.
  14. Is the file an executable? With his US maps it has an installer so winzip is not required, but it had a few issues when the download did not complete correctly (failed crc) so first I would check that you downloaded the entire file first.
  15. Here is a prime example of why a PM is useless! A REVIEWER posted a note on this cachers page asking him to post a note with the intentions to maintain the cache or archive it. The DEADBEAT owner IGNORES the REVIEWER'S message for over 5 months. The Reviewer had no choice but to archive it. Defend it if you will! CACHE OWNER SHIRKING HIS RESPONSIBILITIES You are right, that is a prime example on how it SHOULD be done. A REVIEWER drops a hint, then they (or in this case another) archives when no action is taken. That is how the system is supposed to work. If one of the three DNFs would of posted a NM log, I am sure there would of been no hard feelings. But when SOMEONE logs a NM or SBA with no knowledge of the cache, then it gets irritating. No panties here, just a natural WTF reaction. Again, if one of the three DNFs had added the log, at the same time as their DNF or much further down the road I doubt anyone would have an issue with it. The point of the post was explaining why a PM in many cases is useless. The owner should have seen (and probably did see) that there was a problem with the cache and just IGNORED it. Why do you think a PM would have changed things? First of all, my PM would of had an offer to help with maintenance! As I have no doubt you know, sometimes cachers could use a hand with some caches and an offer of help would go a long way with the health of the geocaching community relations. If a cacher has a maintenance plan already, then they will usually reply with a thanks but no thanks message...problem solved. Now if the timeline does not meet community standards (because there is no guideline) then a reviewer may archive the listing...again problem solved. See, it all boils down to common courtesy. If after a PM the listing is still ignored by the cacher AND the reviewer, then I MAY post a NM log. But you know what, sometimes reviewers have things to do too...then what??

  17. Well, I had to think about this one. You are USUALLY very attentive about maintaining your caches. This one has been DNFed and unavailable for quite a while. Very unusual for you. BTW...This one probably doesn't belong on this thread. I only posted a note...Not an NM or SBA log. Is posting a note ok with you? Posting a note is benign in nature. It doesn't notify the reviewer and it doesn't have that pesky 'ol NM icon. Thought this was the easiest way to prod you. Maybe a PM/Email with something like: edit for speeling (last part is probably a bit much )
  18. That might be good for older logs (which I assume that is where you mean), but on new logs I like to see the current number. When I receive a DNF on one of my caches, I use the finds as an indicator if it is muggled or just missed by the cacher. Maybe if it was a combo like 1042/1050 (then/now) it may be more useful. Though the logs would be current at the time they are sent, I also use that when searching for caches with a couple of DNF logs, it may be that a cacher with just a few finds just missed it so I go for it, and some of these caches don't get found that often so an updating count would be misleading then.
  19. You must do two logs, a find and a needs maint.
  20. The changed file should be compressed just like the full package except that it contains only the new files. You can even make an executable that overwrites the old files and make any other changes that are required, it should download much faster than the full package at the same connection speed. The problem then being that I have to release a new change file for each version, and a separate change file for each old revision for each new revision. In other words, now if I were to release a change file, I'd have to release not only a change file for this version from the previous version, but also 2 other versions for each of the older revisions. I could just release a change file relative to the previous released version, but then people who had fallen behind would have to progress one at a time through each of the version, and I have to do version checking on the installed version, else risk corrupting the Mapsource install. The simple solution is to check the installed files vs. the latest online version, and then add/update any missing ones. As I haven't quite mastered compressing and uncompressing files in code, this means that the files will remain uncompressed. Oh, if anyone would like to take on the job of version tracking, and managing updates as proposed by O-Mega, feel free. Its not something I plan on attacking any time soon. I only ask that you acknowledge the source of the files. I'll gladly provide any assistance I can as far as how the update has to go in order for it to work. Dale I may of overstated the problem I guess, I figured using IbycusUSA13.exe as the base download, then making one change file including any updates, then add files to the update file each time an update is needed until it gets too big to make a noticeable difference then make another base file. So the change file should only have to check against IbycusUSA13.exe and make appropriate changes. Am I oversimplifying it? I guess I haven't asked if anything is done to the registry after the initial registration of the new mapset, is anything else done besides replacing files?

  22. You know, I was thinking that it may not be a bad idea to post each video zipped seperately on a website you control. But password protect it and leave the password at each stage for each coresponding file. That way people could download the files into their laptops and play the file at the appropriate stage...yea I know, some cachers would not want to carry their laptop but then again not everyone gets to do every the cache.
  23. http://www.ibycus.com/ibycususa/IbycusUSA13.exe (906MB) For the updates you should consider doing a 'changed files' download to keep the bandwidth down and the full download for those that missed the first two sets.
  24. I bought my 1GB PNY micro-SD card for around $20 (half price with rebate; orig. $40) around a year ago. It doesn't surprise me at all that prices have gone down, but for a cache like scorpionkill is talking about, you'd probably need half a dozen or more. Even at $10 for cheaper lower-capacity cards, fifty or sixty bucks is pricey for one cache. I'm betting prices will go down even more as SD chip usage becomes more widespread. Oh, I see what you were driving at with your first post; I guess you meant for him to leave these at the cache(s). Yea, I wouldn't do it even if they only cost $5.00. They would grow legs I would think, coins go missing all the time and you can track those.
  25. Could this be applied safely in the field? For example a small cache container in a hollowed out log, the container keeps the ants out of the cache but the log tends to attract ants to the area around the container. Just trying to keep them out of the hiding spot, I agree the container itself should protect the contents. We have even had small camo bags with micros hanging in trees totally fill with ants and their eggs. Hey gof1, sounds like your co-worker needs some desensitization therapy... need us to send him a care package filled with palmetto bugs? ("palmetto bugs" - Florida slang for "monsterously big friggin' cockroaches!") I don't see why not, many times I have treated my boots, socks and other items out in the woods. The stuff is real toxic to bugs, but rather safe for us unless applied directly to the skin. If it's the log they want, maybe you should spray the paper and let it dry before placing in the cache. Rereading the post I think you meant the tree log, in that case yes it is safe to spray on wood. it will keep them off for weeks at a time.
