  1. You are not alone! I have been staring at this thing since it posted and still nothing, and I have a good imagination.
  2. No mystery coins here, and this would be one great coin to change that.
  3. While I wouldn't use a 'tangle' of fishing line to add to the authenticity of such a hide I see nothing wrong with the use of fishing line (or any other string) to secure the container. I have seen many caches use this technique and have a few like this myself. I have yet to see or hear of any problems to wildlife or the aesthetics of an area. As for the actual fishing lure, I think if its hidden a bit from view such as the base of a bush or tree it would work. I have found one like that in a bobber and it looked like it was there for awhile.
  4. Congrats to kdv and ClanDoyle, will be waiting for those pics to start rolling in. Hey tsun, how about doing a public bookmark so we can keep up with your coins travels too?
  5. When dealing with property I would suggest a surveyor. I know my GPS can be accurate enough to find a micro in the woods, but I would not trust it to do survey work. The accuracy can fluctuate in different spots along the way making a straight line very difficult to navigate. If you are going to try this I would suggest getting the azimuth between the two points and using a handheld compass and one person shooting the degree while the other walk out to the furthest tree letting the first make left and right corrections and marking trees in that fashion. You can then do a back azimuth at the second corner and do it again in reverse to see if the trees match up. You will find that the line will be straighter that way and easier to average too.
  6. Garmin does overwrite each mapset with a new one each time you load maps, but I think you can rename gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img and then load the new mapset.
  7. For loading maps into a Garmin gpsr you are stuck with Garmin maps, or some of the Garmin compatible maps that some here on the forums are offering. Both the National Geo and Delorme maps don't speak Garmin. If entering coords is your only issue, use GSAK as the loading/exporting medium. GSAK speaks Garmin, Nat Geo and Delorme.
  8. Sounds like a fun project, I too am waiting on your go message and have this thread in my subscribe list I will keep an eye on this thread whether or not I get chosen to represent
  9. You can download some free ones from a link here: Free Maps
  10. The best thing to do is to use mapping software such as google maps or mapsource to get the coordinates you plan on using and sending them to your reviewer so he/she can check it for you. Though the coordinates may be off a bit it should work for you to get the proper distance.
  11. If going through Nashville, try GC15VHM, its an Earthcache but might be a lot of fun trying to find the right spot and will prime you for Mammoth Caves.

    Earthcaches

Unfortunately I got active into geocaching AFTER I retired from the military so I missed the opportunity to log some of these interesting areas I have been to. I have always been interested in the wonderful natural formations and have visited many parts of the world checking them out. I don't know if you guys noticed but there is now a forum area for earthcaches : Earthcache Forum
  13. Email sent too, first time with this one. I even went and finally got my activation code and learned the many methods to use this coin
  14. From the FAQ thead: "If the username already exists and has ever been validated, or the username has been used in any way, then the username is not available." Sounds like it's worth asking...send an email as directed in the link above. Feel free to discuss this and wonder how it works but the FAQ and the post about it is the correct answer. If the account has any history it can not used by another cacher. Please write Contact@geocaching.com to request an account name. At the risk of starting a controversial thread, the quoted FAQ doesn't say a name can't be given away. It just says that the name is not available for TPTB to change it from another name. But if another cachers does what I suggested, and (I assumed no finds above) if they DO have finds those logs can be deleted right? And as long as it's between the two cachers, who would know? A cacher is allowed to change email, passwords and delete logs so nothing should raise any flags. Again, I figured we were speaking of relatively new cachers asking those with no finds for this. Though I would not suggest anyone do this with anyone with alot of caching history, I don't see the harm in adopting little used names, specially from those that have given up on geocaching.
  15. Maybe an adoption could be setup, whether officially or unofficially with the current owner of the name. I would write the person an email and ask if they plan on continuing geocaching or if they would be willing to give up the name if they have given up the hobby. If unofficial adoption is the only option the current owner can change the password to a temporary password and email it to the new owner who can then change all details and carry on with the name.
  16. It's been done many times over, there shouldn't be any issues with it as long as you only use each number once.
  17. Are you using lithium batteries, they make the 60 csx shut down when they are new. If so, use them in a flashlight or something a bit before putting into the gps.
  18. Umm, how about GPX Sonar? I run it on my phone just fine. Tried GPX Sonar. That's the program of choice. I'm running a brand new phone with Windows Mobile 6. It won't install from the exe or the cab. I also tried BeeLineGPS from the installer and the cab. No luck. I run GPX sonar on my pda no problem and love it. I'd just like to get something on the phone. Trying to download each cache over the net with the phone is a waste of time. I can get three caches in the time it takes to download the discriptions over the net. I have an HTC 8525 and GPX Sonar is working just fine, how are you installing the file? If you are trying to run it from your computer and it doesn't work, try running from the phone's card. I don't remember which way I did it but some software needed to be copied to the phone and ran from there first. Good luck.
  19. Umm, how about GPX Sonar? I run it on my phone just fine.
  20. Snakes aren't poisonous, they are venomous. I've even slipped and made the mistake of typing poisonous by mistake. Mushtang was quick to point out my mistake. Ahh, but prepare one wrong for a sandwich and you will find yourself very sick...would that make them poisonous?
  21. ok, but how do i do that? I entered Indiana, route 40, and anything else i could think of, and i did not have any luck. again any help would be great. thanks Go to google earth and create a route, save it as a kml and upload it. Then base a query on that. It takes a couple of tries sometimes, be sure to break up the route into chunks because there is a length limit and of course you are limited to 500 caches per query.
  22. I bounce back and forth between the two. Sometimes the compass does well, at other times it seems that your locator on the map is better. But I find that I use the map more often when I am doing circles around GZ.
  23. However the red arrow sits inside the compass ring. Isn't there an arrow on regular compasses also? [Potty language and abusive language removed by moderator.] To continue the same line of reasoning......Just because the Tour Director rides in a bus and points directions....that doesn't make "him" a bus.......does it????? Sorry, you have this all wrong. The arrow is an integral part of the compass, it is the part that is magnetized and points to magnetic north (on non-electronic versions). The outside ring just tells you where the arrow is pointing in relation to your direction of travel. Take away the arrow and there is no compass, take away the ring and you still have a crude compass in which you know where north is. You can't have a USEFUL compass without either part so this argument is rather POINTLESS
