  1. Yup. Looks as if you only bought the 3month premium membership. Not the full app. The full app is $10 and a one time fee. You need to buy this via the iTunes Store, not as in in-app service. There is a way to dispute this charge that I'm sure someone on here can help you with...
  2. Also, they are two different apps. So the intro won't turn into the full app.
  3. I went and added an 'owners maintenance' log that predates my find on an adopted cache. Didn't change it to a star.
  4. Bummer, eh? I wish they became stars too...
  5. I see it both on a map view while looking for another nearby cache, and by directly plugging in the GC code What happens when you search by GC code? Are you using the intro app? It's a D3 so it shouldn't appear on that app...
  6. I left a note that asked f permission had been obtained for a cache placed on a private park. My note was deleted. I resubmitted my note stating that deleting logs pertaining to PP issues was not cool, and it made the location look fishy, and if my note is deleted again then I go to GS. Then I pasted my original log below that. Cache is now archived. Notes are there for a reason
  7. Hmm. iPhone, as mentioned in original post and Groundspeak app thjYou used the term App Store which is the iOS. However many refer the Play Store for Android as App store. The term App like Xerox and others has become generic. In fact Google has an icon on its home page that says apps which applies to applets it uses for various uses. So your "Hmm. iPhone, as mentioned in original post" assumption comes across a little snooty. Not uncommon for iOS users. Hmm again. I also used the "Term" iPhone. Can't put it much clearer than that. And I don't understand your generalisation "Not uncommon for IOS users" and it's not being snooty. It's being "why don't people read the whole post before replying" It's ironic really. People for years have called us snooty, and say we act "better" than other people. But in my experience I find this to be 100% opposite, as evidenced in this thread. I read your original post. Seemed clear and obvious to me. Good luck with your offline lists. On my last iPhone I had something like 8-10k caches saved this way
  8. Ths happens to me a few time EACH time I use my 64s. Each.time.
  9. The dinner event has not been listed yet. For Anderson Island, find Steilacoom and look at the island off shore. There are a couple, one has lots of caches, one has none. You want to go to one but not the other. Steilacoom is south of Tacoma along I-5. Thanks. Until this post I had never heard of Anderson island OR steilacoom!
  10. The apps will not sync between iPad and iPhone (other than personal cache notes) So. If you are interested in offline lists (NOT PQs) then this is how you do it.: Open your app, look for new caches to get to the map. Scroll your map to your desired location and hit the little magnifying glass on the lower left that says "New search from here" The app will bring up 10-30 caches (depending on what your personal settings are). Hit the (...) on the upper right-hand corner and you will see a '+ load more results' option. You can hit this button till kingdom come and load as many caches as you'd like. When you've reached a reasonable amount, hit the (...) again and select "-+ safe to off-line list" Then you create a new list (top button),name it and be done with it all. It will be in your saved tab that you access from the bottom. Done
  11. I agreed to adopt a cache as part of the king co geotour. Just a traditional. I went and found it prior to accepting the adoption request. I had to find it just like everyone else. Didn't have special access to the cache page or anything like that Then I adopted it.
  12. Did I miss a GC code somewhere in there? I've never heard of any place listed in the above description...so *any* GC code would be awesome sauce...
  13. Yup. And it actually makes the app work better. I did about 13 caches in a preserve the other day, light elevation, only 440ft gain, heavy tree cover, about 4 miles in distance. At the halfway point, my battery was at 39%! Eegads. Yeah. I got on FB a time or two. And yeah, I read through all the logs on a DNF. But still Turned the cellular off (and my backlight down lower). Cached the way back. 7 caches, same distance/elevation/etc. it was a loop trail. Batts dropped only 15% more. 60% loss vs 15% loss App worked like a champ. Crystal clear reception. Pages loaded lightening quick. With the cellular turned on, they take FOREVER to load. Just forever. For 4 years, with 4 different iPhones, in almost every terrain....the app has ALWAYS worked better with the cellular turned off...
  14. I know nothing about pocket queries, but there's probably a better solution anyway. At home (or at a wifi spot when you're in Greece) created saved lists of caches that interest you - there's a saved icon at the bottom of the app. The information (but quite possibly not the maps) will be there when you turn data roaming off. You'll still be able to locate where you're at and get the compass, hints and so on. I've used this several times abroad and it's not caused any data charges at all. My feeling from a couple of other threads is that pocket queries don't necessarily provide this functionality - I don't know, because I don't use them but I've heard the odd thing mumbled about it. Pocket queries is definitely the better solution. Saving offline lists is easy enough, but PQs are better. Interesting. On my Android phones, I've been able to use Airplane Mode to turn off the cell and data antennas, and then use the GPS antenna with my geocaching apps. It's very useful in areas with poor cell reception, because otherwise the phone would use the antennas at full power, trying to get a connection to a distant tower that is just at the edge of its reception. Does that not work with iPhones? Nope. Airplane mode turns off my little blue dot Turn off cellular. That'll do it..... Turns your phone off, and the app works like a charm
  15. Why not do all this like you've planned and then offer the cache up for adoption? Btw-this all sounds AWESOME!! Definitely swap out the container. And keep it for a keepsake afterwords.....swap in swap out...
  16. I don't get the need wherigos. I mean, you are suing something to navigate the Wherigo, and you use the same thing to navigate to the final. So for a Wherigo I use my iPhone. But not the regular app, I use the Wherigo app. You get the final coords at the end. Just use the same thing! Because all letterboxes need to have the final coords posted. So nowadays people just want to change the final coords off jump street and skip all that "letter boxing" to get straight to the final To me this strikes as lazy. If I need coords added, I just add a wpt. Easy to do on every device I own. Like, so freakin easy that having GS implement this seems like a crazy waste of time and valuable resources. But hey, that's just me.
  17. I wish GS would leave a copy of the caches in your hidden section of your stats, with it being listed as adopted. When you click on the cache it takes you to the owners page or the cache itself Because once you adopt a cache out it disappears as if its never happened on your acct. that's sad
  18. Yup. GS can block their unvalidated account. Then 2 minutes later they will just sign up for another unvalidated account and start over and over and over
  19. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking.... It's a cell phone thing. If you're geocaching with a phone (smartphone, iphone, etc) - You need cell signal. Some folks are able to geocache with the iphone without cell signal via having Pocket queries loaded in their phones and only using the GPS. However - I've tried it - and my phone was very S L O W and locked up often. Not fun. Some of the wooded areas / hiking trails near my home do not have cell service. Dead zones. No. You don't need a cell signal. At all. And you don't even need queries. You can save caches locally to an offline list when you're at home. So yeah-you need an offline list. But that's it. Zero cell service needed to geocache. My Garmin needs to be loaded up with caches when I'm at home too! My app behaves 100% better with data/cellular turned OFF which is how I cache when I'm hiking alone in the mountians. I intentionally cache with it off. Course, I do the same when I'm cache in Canada too. Cell-off. App better. Caches found. Done. It's obvious you geocache with a cell phone.... nothing wrong with that, I've done it. Do you own a handheld GPS? Have you ever geocached with a handheld GPS? Yes! So my siggy says...two handhelds even!! A Garmin 60CSx and a 62s. Yes! I've used it. Last week on Canada-although my iPhone (with data and cell turned off) outperformed my Garmin hands down. I also take it with me each time I hike. Again, I still use my iPhone to cache. I use the Garmin for the NWTopos mapset. Can't get that on my iPhone. If i could get NWTrails/NWTopos on the iPhone....well, I'd put both garmins up on eBay.
  20. I just hold my hand over the screen Last week' I was caching in Canada, so Iwas running on PQs. Consistently, my iPhone was far, far more accurate than my Garmin 62s. My husband actually said, "why are we using this thing??" Because the Garmin was so off. Usually it's rock solid, no lie. But this trip it was running 70ft+ off, shutting completely off at random times, the little arrow wouldn't move to indicate my position, etc Many times the difference between 70ft meant I had to climb down one rock face and climb up another on the other side of the trial. It was......exhausting. On that day, the iPhone was no comparison. That being said...I don't go on the trail without my Garmin either.
  21. GS sells stickers for micros. But...would a micro or nano cause a bomb scare??? If it's big enough to cause a bomb scare, then it 's big enough to be labeled...
  22. +1, especially regarding readability....I gave my 5S a try this weekend at the lakefront and it bordered on being unusable. I can't imagine caching with it out west where cover is scarce. I didn't have much of a problem caching in sunny Arizona using my iPhone....for 2 years. And when it's sunny here on Seattle-my Garmin screen is as reflective as my iPhone. So. There ya go As far as durability. I will never ever ever ever leave my iPhone on the roof of my car. Lol I have dropped it down a muddy wet trail where it literally tumbled 20ft down hill-into a pile of mud. I was heading up and nearing the summit, so I was mostly bummed out about the 20ft additional elevation gain. The iPhone, however, was just fine As usual In my years on this forum....I've yet to see a valid argument against smartphones. Not one. I'm lucky I've field tested so many iPhones, and in so many different environments. Oh. And I only have a bumper on mine. No case
  23. I've still yet to find a need for a 'cell signal' for caching??? Please advise where on earth this is necessary. Lol
  24. Honestly, I don't see it is primarily "our" job to educate new users. If Groundspeak has an intro app intended to remove the barriers to entry it's their job to make sure users of the app know how to play the game. If users of Groundspeak's official app don't know that finding a cache is about looking for it, signing the log, hiding it properly and writing a few words to say what you thought of the experience then Groundspeak have catastrophically failed. If new users don't understand that the purpose of the stuff in the cache is to trade rather than just take what you fancy, and that trackables aren't trade items, then Groundspeak have catastrophically failed. If Groundspeak care more about getting extra people to pony up a few bucks than about the long term viability of geocaches that aren't film pots behind signs with an expected lifespan of a few weeks, they deserve to be driven out of business by cache owners refusing to hide anything bigger than a film pot and the consequential loss of interest and loss of paying customers. Groundspeak will not go out of business. There will always be a wave of people willing to hide and find film pots behind signs Let's get that out of the way right now. Because it's all good and fine to live in a world we we think that this will happen. You and every other great user who hides and finds great caches and cares about the game can leave tomorrow ....and Groundspeak will still survive. So. Why don't we work with the real problems that are happening, instead of theoretical ones that aren't/won't? I mean, we can dream until the cows come home that GS will do what we want/think they should do. Or. We can just do it ourselves. Also. I dont expect everybody to care enough about the game to be involved with new members. That's fine. It reminds me of nursing really. Lots of experienced nurses refuse to mentor our new nurses. "That's the hospitals job!" Or "they need to learn on their own" Whatever. Personally. I like to help new people. Be it geocachers or newbie nurses. I like to play an active role in my mileu, whatever it may be. I'd like to contact new members and guide them. It really only takes one email. So. You can choose not to be involved. No problem. I like to actually work on problems instead of just complaining about them So please....no unvalidated emails.
