  1. What is your writing utensil of choice to put your name in a log book? I typically carry a two ended sharpie with a fine point on one end and an ultra fine on the other, or a pilot g2 pen. What about you?
  2. live in the moment, act like you should be there, say hello to those you cross, and hide away!
  3. welcome to the digital age. :-) trust me, easygps is a great too to learn how to transfer data to and from your gps! pocket queries or manual cache waypoint downloads.
  4. i am a etrex hcx and a previous gpsmap76 user... you can get a USB to serial adapter from your local computer store that will allow you to sync your gps with a tool like gsak or easygps. but to answer your question... whenever you mark a spot you can arrorw up to the field with the GPS coords and change it to the coords of the GC you're adding (it auto populates the field with your current location or the arrow's current location on the map). after you save the new waypoint with the GPS coords you put in manually, it adds the little point to the map for you to direct yourself too.
  5. alright, i figured this out thanks to a guy in the gsak forum. http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=7033 'garmin geocache.bmp' works like a charm!
  6. to explain better, this is the image i'm wanting... i think. http://screencast.com/t/NR6taGmViKHM
  7. I started using GSAK to manage my pocket queries now that I've learned how to create custom POI files for my Garmin eTrex HCX. The problem I've run into is whenever I use the built in 'Export to Garmin POI', The gpi file does not have symbols that match the built in garmin geocache chest icon. Anyone know where I can find that symbol to add to my export settings?
  8. do you carry your gps on a lanyard while geocaching? i currently carry my vista hcx in a little neopreme garmin pouch and clip it to the pocket of my jeans whenever i need to sign a log. i'm thinking of switching over to a lanyard system and include a bic pen on a key ring with a hole drilled in the cap side.
  9. Now that it's getting HOT in North Texas, I'm thinking of making a wood walking stick to carry when I go after a cache in areas likely to have snakes. Show me what you carry and share some stories of the adventures the walking stick, cane, or poking stick, has traveled through.
  10. Make sure the hcx is turned on and at the map screen, then plug in the usb. you should hear the computer make the sound that it found the hardware, and then your software will use it. it's also worth opening google earth or easygps to see if it will find the garmin device.
  11. also check out your armynavy surplus stores. they often carry steel ammo cans, as well as plastic ammo cans. there are a number of geocaching web stores, but i know people that typically go to the big online store that makes a certain popular ebook reader because they have a lot of supplies as well. you might check out the aloksac bags, but they can be pricey. might be easier to get write in the rain note pad to throw in your container.
  12. i have always carried silva compass'. my current explorer 203 is always there and always reliable. if you enjoy your lensatic, silva makes a version as well as brunton. between those two brands and their warranty's (assuming you make it back to cash in a faulty compass :-p), i do not think you can go wrong.
