  1. Preparing for the new challenge for June, or doing local Lab Caches for the current one, I also noted the problem ... sure, the Lab Caches themselves are visible, but considering e.g. in the local City there are some 10-15 Labs, with some 50-75 locations, some closer, some farther apart, it would be really nice if one would see locations independently from the master lab cache entry ... quite often, locations from different caches are close to each other, and you will only notice once you start the other lab cache ... that sucks ... especially if you want to either clear an area, or go for some large numbers ...
  2. Sorry to say, but your excuses for this 33% price hike for German users are more than thin... And refusal to post a usually publicly available registration number just seems to confirm that the official reasoning may not be the actual reason. If GS believes that after 10+ years an increase of membership fees for PM is needed, that is well within your rights. But alienating a large part of your customer base by singling out countries with selective price increases is not the way to go. I believe I can speak for a large percentage of the affected catchers if I say that the couple bucks more isn't the problem or the reason for the complaints. Expecting them to be stupid and accept half-a** excuses for being treated differently is.
  3. That didn't take long - the newest "fix" messed up the web page yet again ... Back to hacking the code again ...
  4. I hope they don't go there ... look at opencaching.com - I do see why they are doing the minimalistic cache descriptions (after all, compared to modern smartphones, Garmin devices' view of a cache page is like a TTY screen compared to HD TV) - but with all the possibilities of making pretty web pages, taking that away or even limitting it seriously hurts the advancements of the game ...
  5. After about three or four dozen attempts, I finally got the layout tweaked enough that the desired effect worked again ... still pretty unnerving to see the rather inconsistent handling of HTML code there ...
  6. Actually, as it's part of the riddle for a puzzle cache, getting rid of the cropping would force me to re-work part of the puzzle ...
  7. Is it just me or are the new layout's style sheets applied to broadly? I had a listing that overlayed two images, which worked fine. Then the mayor update came, which originally broke it. I fixed that by tweaking the layout a bit, so it would be displayed fine again. Now there have been some more changes internally, and I can't get the overlay to work at all anymore. No matter what CSS/style setting I try to use, some of the myriad of style settings by the website break anything I could use ... either the cropping is broken, tables extended in width, images rescaled smaller with the stupid looking glass, ... Does anybody have an example on how to display part of an image, with a second image overlayed on top of it? Or a way to set up some <div> that more or less disables all general settings so that I can just use the code that works without the GC.com stylesheet? Tnx!
  8. Maybe I misunderstand your suggestion, but isn't the checkbox "Save the project when the cartridge is built or run" under File>Settings>Build exactly what you desire? Yup, I guess you're right! Didn't come across that before ... Tnx!
  9. After being in a pinch because of some "non-standard" way of doing a multi (by phoning in at the stages to get questions and answering them), I looked a bit closer at using Urwigo for creating the alternative way of doing the cache ... turns out this program is really amazing! I ended up doing most of the coding by hand, as some of the features I needed were pretty hard or impossible to do with the GUI programming ... but short of that, Urwigo is a great piece of work! Haven't had a single problem, no crashes, etc ... thanks for all the work and effort that went into it!! GS should really just dump their WIG builder from the WIG website and replace it with Urwigo ... Only have one suggestion - some kind of auto-save to recover from crashes ... while the GUI itself never crashed, I managed to build an endless loop at one point that kept the PPC simulator busy ... had to kill the program, which of course meant the last changes were lost ...
  10. Tnx, I came across the ZVariables looking through the generated code once I set up a little test cartridge which seemed to work ... Luckily, I can get bye without any complex datatypes, though I would reckon Urwigo should be possible to extend to allow for "custom" data type ... The only arrays I really need to store I can compress into text strings and then read out again on restore ... not the most comfortable thing to do, but it works ...
  11. Hi, I'm working on my first "full" cartridge, using Urwigo (great program btw!!!) with lots of hand-written code due to the limitations of the drag'n'drop interface. I have lots of text stored in tables/array, etc ... The cartridge itself is pretty near completion, but I have just noticed a problem - when interrupting play (or the player's GPS crashing - I do Syncs after stages automatically) and resuming, not all variables seem to be restored ... specifically, some array I initialize in my custom init routine aren't filled. I've tried to find some how-to on resuming/restoring a cartridge, but couldn't ... what am I missing here? What do I have to watch out for in order to get everything back into a working state?
  12. What really bugs me in this whole ordeal is that IMHO there is no part of the guidelines that forbids any of what I'm trying to do here, and that are loads and loads of caches (both old and new) that also use calls ... coming across more and more as I do research ... apart from Wherigo, I do not see any other way of implementing an interactive cache the way I intend to ... and given the more than mixed results I've personally seen with the quality of WIG implementations, I don't see where this is an improvement over a simple phone call. WIG is only implemented on a small number of Garmin GPSRs (and not even on some brand new models like the 62), or require smart phones (which not everybody has, and which also cost money ). Add to that the instabilities of the interpreters (on one WIG I did, my GPS would crash about twice per stage ...). So is this really adding to the experience? Guess all that's really left is contacting GS for clarification of the rules ...
  13. From what the reviewer mentioned, there have been some caches before that were published, with some discussion afterwards or changed listings once they had been published, which is why he's currently hesitant to publish it ... And yes I know that I can't get a cache that doesn't follow the guidelines "forced" through by referencing another cache that breaks the same rules ... that's not what I want anyway ...
  14. My intention at this point is not directed towards the reviewer, whom I'm in contact with in order to explain the cache and game-flow, but to see mainly whether I actually misunderstand the guidelines (though both original and "official" translation in German do not seem to contradict my cache listing), and to see if there are caches that require something like phone calls ... I fully understand support any rule that is aimed at preventing monetary gain by premium numbers (or other commercial interests) as written down in the guidelines. But without any commercial interest, and negligible cost to the cacher (if any at all), I don't really see anything that would go against the cache at the moment ...
  15. Wouldn't work, as it's sort of an interactive cache - you get the next location (which is picked randomly from a set of 14 different locations), as well as a random question (from a set of 3-7 questions per location) and have to answer the question within a given time ... the only way to get around it would be to give out the final location ...
  16. I believe at the moment it might just be based on an "oversimplification" of the guidelines, projecting the large paragraph about commercial caches to "caches must not cost money" ... I've already explained the whole concept of the cache, and my understanding of the rules to the reviewer ... got to see how that goes ... I reckon with such a new kind of cache idea, I was bound for some discussion anyway Apart from that, I must say our local reviewers are pretty reasonable, so I hope this whole issue can be resolved soon
  17. Hi, I have just set up a new cache which involves calling an automated system to get coordinates and answer question at waypoints in order to "win" the game and finally get the coordinates to the physical cache. I received an inquiry from a local reviewer, stating that "caches must not cost anything" and how requiring cachers to call a number would fit in with that. Now, the number you need to call is a regular land line, no premium number or anything. I do not gain any financial benefits from calls. Also, many cachers in Germany will nowadays have either flat rates, or the cost involved is rather negligible compared to all the other cost involved in getting a cache (I estimate the typical phone cost to be something around or less than $1. Also, the cache description clearly states the requirements, so anybody attempting the cache would have the clear information about the calling being required). Anyway, I also believe that the statement about the cache not being allowed to cost anything is a rather abbreviated interpretation of the GC rules, which read: As for the main goal, "with the principal or substantial intent of soliciting customers or generating commercial gain", this is clearly not the case, as the cache is in no way connected to a business, or causes any gain to me or any business (apart of course the phone providers). No cacher is required to enter any shop and purchase any items or services. Also, as far as the cost goes, the estimated cost for the calls equals something like half a quart of fuel ... so anybody driving to the cache will most likely pay more for the transportation than for the cache itself. If one would interpret the guidelines in a way that rejected any cost, even the attribute "park or entrance fee" would clearly designate any non-confirming caches. Or caches that require extensive (and expensive) equipment not readily available, as e.g. climbing gear, would not be permissable. What's other cachers' experiences with caches incurring some kind of cost? Or is there any clarification as for the "no cost" rules?
  18. Have you looked at the Puzzle Cache 101 series? Not very complicated hides, getting the coordinates is the tricky part
  19. Wondering, some time ago I got a notification of a new cache, I believe it may have been in the Cocoa Beach area (FL), and I thought I had marked it, but apparently I did not ... The description said something about it being a larger container with some "tools" and pieces, along with a rubber mat or something, and a smaller container one would supposed to open with said tools ... I was wanting to give it a try, but can't seem to find it anymore ... Anyone around here that has seen it and can give me the cache id/name? I thought the name had contained something about MacGyver, but again, searching for that didn't turn up anything useful in the FL area ... Tnx, -garry
  20. Hi, I'll be in the Palm Beach area for a week after Apr 18th, and was wondering if there are some other cachers around who'd like to go and get a couple night caches in the area? (50mi radius or so) Bye, -garry
  21. "snow covered" and "lovely" are mostly mutual exclusive for me both hobbies more or less on ice till spring ... (cars & GC)
  22. yeah, just keep on teasing the rest of us ...
