  1. They are generated manually as they are stored on a server. Creating dynamically on the fly would be the ideal situation, but would require a database that could auto update itself on the server. But creating the map images takes a few seconds usually so updating them to the server occasionally is not a huge task. Luckily with these sort of stats we are dealing with they do not change drastically in a short period of time, so I will probably update them on a monthly basis.
  2. And a further set of maps showing the distribution of cache sizes in South Africa here. Not Chosen and Other have been put on seperate maps, although they often represent the same thing, eg. nano or magnetic sheet, they may not, so it might be of interest to see them seperately as shown here. ( javascript required to view )
  3. Another set of maps can be seen here showing the distribution of cache types in South Africa. The 6 most common types are represented, no events are listed and virtuals have also been excluded, these being mostly in the Western Cape. Click on a link to load the map image ( javascript is required to view these )
  4. Click here to view individual maps of where all the different D/T combo caches are located in SA. Based on my Database as of 10.01.2012 and covers all non event caches that are active ( ie not Archived, but may be Temp Disabled ). Clicking each link in the grid will load that specific D/T map below the grid. This is a pilot version and may be improved / expanded in due course. ( javascript is required to view these )
  5. This will work only once you have populated your DB with a range of caches, but it helps to track down ranges initially. Once you have the majority of KZN caches loaded you can tweak your pq's from time to time.
  6. Can be done with 2 pocket queries (if you are happy with 1000 waypoint pq's) Filter for state = Kwazulu Natal and for date range between 24.07.2002 and 25.08.2011 for the first one and the other query from 26.08.2011 to any future date. The first PQ should return 998 results and the second ± 37.
  7. As it stands the DrDm & Raider / FlyingSyringe videos are now crediting the outside sources and we are contacting cachers to get their permissions to show videos where there may be interest. iPajero have given consent, but as they are currently busy with another long and fruitful caching journey we will hold off a short while so that we can show the most current stats. Further tweaks and enhancements are being considered, but as work gets in the way it may be a while for the newer "blinger" version to appear.... all we can say is watch this space
  8. Perhaps not quite what you had in mind, but here is a video of iPajero's finds in SA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE0wxKRmyWI View On YouTube
  9. And one for Durban: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPSKWDmN6Rg
  10. Yes indeed not the first in South Africa but the first Electric Street Light in JHB. Over to you cincol
  11. What was first erected in October 1895, in JHB on the corner of Rissik and President streets?
  12. I know the answer but have no pictures to continue at present... and perhaps someone else could get a chance
  13. Ok, I think the time has come to put everyone at ease here. Interestingly the answers given were naturally the most obvious and logical choice that would have been made by Vets and Game Rangers. Having started capturing antelope and larger herbivores with chemicals the thought was that yes a close to 1 ton animal should require a relative dosage to that of a Zebra of about 200 kg. So a Zebra would require 4 - 6 mg of an opioid drug known as M99 (Etorphine - a synthetic derivative of morphine, that is roughly 1000 times stronger). So naturally the first attempts at darting rhinos utilized in the region of 20 mg, and the Rhino's would die a very sudden and unexpected death. In the end it was discovered that Rhinos require 1 - 2 mg of M99 to effectively sedate them! As a result modern chemical capture techniques employ a cocktail of drugs, but M99 is still used in that cocktail, and for capturing many other animals. So they may look big n tuff out there but they are really quite sensitive little guys.
  14. No not quite the right answer, answers are in the right ballpark though.
  15. Thinking along the right lines, but no, that is not correct
  16. South Africa is well known for it's wildlife, what did early Game Rangers find out about White Rhinos in particular that set them aside from other game when they were captured for relocation purposes?
  17. Ok wilco... should have a challenge for all by the morning
  18. hmmm let me try. Euro boardgames are generally fun family orientated, so kid friendly and try to stick to common ethical and moral behaviours whilst delving into fun. Ameritrash probably means that the characters are 'ability' based lets say eg. wizards, demons or soldiers and have the ability to behave in 'real-life' situtations which could include dominance, fear, violence and theft.
  19. Well GPS technology is not that old, Cell Phone technology is not that old. So maybe a divining rod, soothsayer, trek pony and psychic.
  20. Obviously not speaking for Anton, but I presume that he has based his calculations on South ( perhaps Southern ) Africa caches. So your TB distance is probably based on trips including trips to Europe / America so the extra thousands of km's come from the spanning distances. It also depends on if *all* your found logs are present ( and you logged in the correct order to be accurate ) in Anton's Data Base which is not a guarantee with the way that GS only includes 5 logs in each pocket query, so there may be gaps here and there. This would probably compound for older caching teams, depending on how long Anton has been keeping logs on caches. As to Wazat's quip, the caching distance is only a small percentage of actual distance covered as the calculations are based on Great Circle distances between caches. There would be no way to accurately get road distance, as no one knows which roads you actually took and how many circles you drove before you reached GZ .
  21. Yes indeed you are on the right track.... no hints yet ( just for fun ) GCM0Z2 - Shongweni Micro? (I haven't done it yet). Nope not right ... but getting warmer
  22. Yes indeed you are on the right track.... no hints yet ( just for fun )
  23. Choo Choo GC10779?? Yes indeed like I said *much* easier . To you again PT .
