  1. Haha! My neighbors already think I'm weird... Maybe a good way to get to know them better Yeah, the 10 days was just with the mouth bits that broke off. Very painful digging out!
  2. Oh, I've never heard of Permethrin before! What a great idea, i will look into it.
  3. Lol, well, it was just the head, I was hoping it would eventually eject itself without becoming infected! I wouldn't have tolerated a living tick in me that long!!!
  4. I was just wondering myself about some of these things.... Is under a bridge considered an easement, or does it belong to the adjacent property owner?? In other words, do easements have a y axis? How far down or up? Sort of interesting to me from a legal perspective I guess. What about large bodies of water? Who owns a buoy in the ocean?
  5. What do other lone geocachers do about ticks? I found one on my back that I couldn't reach. Tried to coax it out but ended up with the head embedded, then had to wait ten days to see my mom who helped me dig it out! Geez. Any tips on avoiding getting them, or getting rid of them immediately after minor bushwhacking?
  6. Wow! That sounds amazing! I'm not sure I trust the community so much as to invite strangers onto my porch yet! But it sounds awesome.
  7. So interesting! Gosh I am out of touch. I would worry about opening my phone up to read a tag that could possibly be malicious? I just ordered some NFC stickers to play around with. Still don't understand the difference between RFID and NFC. This article is pretty good... I automatically trust the information because of the 90's rap reference, OPP, lol. https://electronics.howstuffworks.com/difference-between-rfid-and-nfc1.htm
  8. I think it could be cool! You would have to make it appear to be a notice for something really really boring. Like a laminated business card for a service nobody cares about. Then tuck the log in the sleeve on the back side of the card. Or a missing pet poster, a la Hearts in Atlantis. Even then it will probably get muggled a lot, just have it near your home so you can check it every day? -edit: I don't think ALL caches have to be in inspirational places... I mean, if I haven't been there before, it's interesting just because I haven't been there and I wouldn't have gone there otherwise. But I'm a total noob, ha.
  9. Wait... NFC geocoins? That sounds interesting. But for what purpose? (I can't read German, plus I'm too impatient to research if the answer doesn't pop up right away)
  10. I adore finding painted rocks, it's so unexpected! And some of them are so well done too, I really enjoy relocating them for other people to be delighted! I definitely would prefer to find a painted rock in a cache over junky kids' toys, bottle caps and other trash. Most painted rocks I have found appeared to be landscaping stones purchased for the purpose of painting them, not local. But I don't know where these rocks come from, is this really a problem in the world? People using up all the rocks??? (I'm talking about legit artists doing this, I've never found one that looked like a kid did it. That would be rather horrible.)
  11. I just found this https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=88&pgid=638 which is a start.
  12. Thanks everybody for your answers! I won't be placing a cache for a long time, I'm beginning to comprehend the responsibility! I am still curious about how easements work, as far as who you would need to get permission from? The owner of the adjacent property or the city/county? (Seems it would be difficult either way, and yet they exist.)
  13. Thanks for putting so much time into this response, it's great to hear from somebody near me, and to learn about my area! I won't be making a cache for a quite while yet, I'm obviously very nooby, lol! Regarding cemeteries, the one I had in mind is on private property but has been flagged as "USED FOR RELIGIOUS BURIAL" on county records and is apparently open to the public, but it hasn't been maintained for a couple of years, the owners are in Texas. Obviously I would never go near a grave. I am a find-a-grave volunteer and I've photographed some of the tombstones there.
  14. Kunarion, this is wonderful to learn! It just seems amazing to me because somehow I had never heard of geocaching until last week!
  15. Thanks, that's a good tip... don't make it a yes or no question because it's too easy to say no, lol! Make it a conversation instead. (Anyway, I won't be hiding one anytime soon, I am so new.)
  16. this thread is kinda the same question... no answers though. HOW are there so many caches around me? Where I live all land is owned, and all public land has a no cache policy. I don't happen to know a bunch of landowners who would say okay because of liability. I would put it on my own property, but I don't want the neighbors to freak out. Seriously, you might get shot. rednecks.
  17. How do you pitch geocaching to a landowner when you need permission for a cache?? I'm a total noob at this point, but I'm just curious how people go about this. Is there a script that people use? It's very hard to imagine convincing a landowner to give permission to let random strangers on their property when they have never heard of the game before, and how would you even describe it? There is a very old, small abandoned cemetery near me where I would eventually like to place a cache. (I live in a rural area that doesn't have many caches, and the average find is about once a month). But the landowner is from another state and I only have their name and PO Box from the tax assessor. The place is not maintained at all. (They would literally never know! But that's against the rules.) Also, it's a cemetery so they obviously don't mind people going there to visit graves. I went last week to fulfill a request from Find-A-Grave. (I'm sorta amazed that there are any caches around me at all, since the state guidelines where I live seem SO strict. ) Thanks for the feedback!
  18. Thank you for the advice, it was very useful! I found three yesterday ( so fun! ) and failed to find two ( bummed! ). Had to put my hand in a hole full of scorpions (the small ones we have in GA, not dangerous), which was a bit icky. Even walking through tall grass this time of year you will get ticks, had to wear long pants, cinched at the cuffs!
  19. Omigosh that is SO me, lol. I am still mostly clueless!
  20. Thank you! That is a good point, I would have to alert my neighbors. I will definitely find some first, and meanwhile try to think of something really epic for my first cache. Also looking forward to leaving some random nice things for people. I can't wait until morning.
