  1. Geocaching involves two things for us 1. Outdoors 2. Puzzle solving But it goes deeper. Families no longer eat around the table together. This is our table on wheels you could say. We have a common topic to talk about in this scatter brain world we live in. This world of instant gratification is 24/7. Caching is old scool you could say, or at least my legs say we are earning it
  2. That is what I discovered right of the bat also. It annoyed me for a while, I posted about why put junk in caches. Used other words than junk and found out the same thing. What I learned was just take the junk out, like the cigarette I found in a cache at park next to kids practicing baseball. One person in our area even dedicated his cache to this topic. To claim credit you had to remove junk and place something good in. Just like the workplace you have the holy people and you have the jerks and sometimes they are both in one body. Just let it slide and enjoy caching. I get where you are coming from. Around my area we have people with 12,000 and 10,000 finds and many others with just thousands. I live around Portland Ore. near the first cache ever hid so talk about some righteous folks but still good people and the longer I cache the better I get to know them
  3. I just found a travel bug today. Log it in and it turns out it was lost for over four years ago. The owner was surprised and thrilled. Any other similiar stories out there?
  4. Thx - I have been hear and tried much of it. Thx for the tip
  5. I agree. It keeps going on like that.
  6. This is the first time I have ran across a cipher. I have spent a couple hours of researching and could spend many more. Crytogography is something I have never studied Would anyone know what kind of cipher this is? I don't want the answer but a hint to get started. Here is a partial copy GCTATGATGCAATGTGCCAATTAAAACCAGCGTACTCATTTTCAACGCACCTATTTCATTGTTGAAGATGAG GGTCGTGAAGAGTCTACATGGGAAAATACGTATTTTCAAGTACGCCCTCAGATCAACACTGAGATTGGTCAT Thank you
  7. I luv the custom ones Fake nuts, bolts, birdhouses, birdfeeders, hollowed log, stake in the ground, spider in tree/bush, bugs(bee and dragonfly found so far), container on chain glued under fence post cap and etc.... Once your find them you just smile ear to ear at the creativity.
  8. Many people who are caching did not come prepared to trade. They aren't carrying trade goods, either because they've already learned that the trade goods in caches are of little or low value, or if they're quite novice, they just haven't thought about that part. However, when they see something they want, something of actual value ->> they take it. They either leave some bit o' crud from the bottom of their bag, or think they'll "make it up on the next cache". This causes the degradation of contents of all new caches from good to bad (assuming the cache contents to have been good in the first place). My caches start out with a modest assortment of new items, all of value of $1 - $4. Typically a new matchsafe, a small lock and lock, a nylon camo bag, good quality bungees, etc. Where the cache is comparatively close to parking, say under a half mile, by the time the cache has had as many visits as it has trade items, it's unusual for there to be a single original item, a single new item, a single item purchased as a geocaching trade. It's all bottom o' the bag crud; McToys, "sig items" (ie, something that is of little or no value, but that the cacher has signed - some people assign high value to their own signature ;-) - I've seen a cacher take a lock & lock and leave a signed business card. Yep, that's a fair trade Conversely, if the cache is a longish journey, it's possible that all of the original items will still be in the cache many visits later (except the camo nylon bag, which is always taken). Cachers doing the longer hikes, 'whacks or kayak trips are hardly looking at, or fooling with the cache contents. They're doing the journey. Oh yeah, cachers will take a trade item and leave a trackable coin or bug. I've seen that too, from an experienced cacher. This is straight out, - take something, leave nothing. But somehow, in the moment, it "feels" like a trade. Thx for the reply. Totally agree, totally understand. It would be great for kids so why not designate caches for certian things. I am just seeing totally, and I am saying this with love, just really stupid things, not cute things. Luv it. just wondering
  9. As a newbie, you can expect a moderator to come in here soon and probably do something about this thread and the wordage you have used in it. Even I think it crossed the line... But, as I understand your sentiments I will say this, people from all walks of life cache. From the smartest (me) to the less intelligent and everywhere inbetween. Whatever type of person you run into in the world, there will likely be a cacher with the same standards. My apologies. I am not aware of the high moral standards of using the words "stoned" or "buzzed". You are probably right, no one who does this "game' or "sport" does these things. I am sorry for just making a general observatiopn based on my lack of experience. Are we following the the George Carlin 7 words rule, are we following a particular religion, please let me know and I will read the text and follow it. I do not want to upset anyone. Thank you KAW I luv it, hooked, but can't a guy voice an opinion on silliness. I can easily voice an opinion and some cool canhces we found. It is not all luv and hugging. I luv hugging but it doesn't mean you can't disagree. Next time we meet I'll give you a big ole bear hug. Hope you make to Portland Ore. er... you replied to yourself.... twice... YEAH EVEN LEARNING THIS FORUM SYSTEM IS SILLY, please forgive a non-nerd. My Dugoens and Dragons how to class meets next week. Opps, another do not say that warning message coming up . Don't worry, I won't be visiting these forums soon, the Quaker bible is thick. It'll take a couple of years to read.

  12. Posted reply To your question: Can't a guy post a question or does it all have to be all hugs and kisses? A cache doesn't have to hard but put some thought into it and don't drop off some nuts/crackers in it. Really, and moldy. Do rational individuals read these posts or people just looking to jump others. I don' care, bring it on , let us bring life into this sport/really game, KAW

  15. So I am a newbie. 70 finds and I have found dog biskets, candy, and generally stupid stuff that molds and erodes and it just stupid and thoughtless caches. Like why place a cache that will leak moisture and when the last 10 post say cannot sign there is no response? And if a cache it stuffed why stuff it it with more? Idiots abound I get it. And, if you are stoned and or buzzed or both do not hide a cache. It is not funny Cache on, luv it
  16. Ok KoolAidWino here AKA El Grande Lame-O himself Map is loaded. We are ready. I am sure I'll be back. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. This piece of garbage just has the major roads, no minoir streets. Now that i have looked around it was a waste of money I can use Google maps. How can I get a basic map on this thing? This has to be simple. Like I said probably the user. I should zoom in on the mapsource map. Like from 400ft. Lame usr here, school of hard knocks. Saga continues thanks for putting up with me so far

  19. With an Oregon street maps is easy. No need for mapsource. But that doesn't help you... Did you try out the method I outlined above? Is any step giving you trouble? Remember, you need to select the map you want to upload in step 4. Ok got some action going but let me simplify, catching on some. 1. I would like a basic street map so me and the kid can going geocaching locally and thus learn this and build up our knowledge.
  20. I select a section and nothing, zero, zilch action.
  21. I would like just to load a street map to get started. So far mapsource is worthless. I am sure it would be easy if I shell out another 100.
  22. Just got a etrex vista hcx and I am a newbie. I am good with computers and so far this a ridiculous. I need to load maps apparently, 200, bucks and you get some lines for roads. So I am downloading all these free maps. No spells this out. How do you get these working? Manual is useless, just lame so far. Just overall weak. as with PCs it is usually the users fault but come on it couldn't be any harder to get get started.
  23. You want new? I just received my etrex Vista HCx 90 minutes ago. Want to try something new with the family and I am totally lost with this stuff but will catch on. This whole loading maps and micro card needed was not known so this is the first bump in the road. Any good and free sources for these maps?
