  1. Today I went caching for the first time since getting my new 60csx. I took my 60cs along to compare performance in the trees now that we have dense leaf cover again.

Twice the 60csx brought me within 3 feet of the cache. Each time, the 60cs was 20+ feet off.

I am crazy in love with the increased sensitivity of the new x series! If you can afford the price difference, the performance increase is very impressive!

  2. The finding of Caches by the USN is nothing new. We used to find a lot of caches in the Rung Sat, Mekong Delta back in the 60's. And this stuff was bigger and more dangerous than any jackknives in a cache. So after the find we used a satchel charge so the cache was archived on the spot. And its your guess what we did to the muggles.

I suppose you handed out geocaching introductory brochures to the muggles?

  3. I am sure that this is just a simple human error that someone grabbed the wrong box when packing your return. They will make it right.

Certainly frustrating, but I have had excellent service when dealing with Garmin. They sent me a brand new in the box 60CS last week after doing warranty work for free AFTER the warranty had technically expired. This let me sell the new unit and upgrade to a CSX!

  4. I don't get it. . .

What is the point of giving me a link to automatically put a Magellan GPS into my Amazon shopping cart?

Only thing amusing about this is that I scrolled to the bottom of the page and saw that the "Related top sellers" are all GARMIN products!

  5. I'm just using the included 64MB chip until the 2GB chips are out and the price drops. I may pick up a 512 or 256 if I can get one very cheap between now and then.

Even though it is nothing to brag about, the slight increase over my 60CS is pleasant enough as it allows me to load some additional topo maps along with the street maps I normally keep loaded.

It's ok since I am not going to be doing a LOT of travelling over the next few months and don't really *need* the higher capacity.

I am very much looking forward to dumping vast quantities of both CS/CN and topo maps onto it though.

  6.

Out of curiosity, Why did you not mention this in your log? Others before you had.

While I was at the cache, my father was in a nearby hospital undergoing quadruple bypass surgery. I couldn't stand being in the hospital any longer and was just happy to get outside. It wasn't a cache I had researched, just one I had coords for. Had I read more logs before posting mine, I would have known that I was not the only one to find more than he was looking for. The park itself was very nice and I thought my unusual discovery was an isolated event.

  7. You might do better looking for "Morel" with only one "L".

I can tell you that my experience with the "pro" morel hunters in the northwest is that they very well might kill you if they find you picking morels in places that they have staked out for themselves, even if they are on national forest property. They take it as seriously as some people take their illegal cash crops.

Considering that these mushrooms sell for insane prices, I don't think anyone will give you their exact coordinates to their locations for free. If I knew a place where they grew in abundance, I don't think I would tell my own mother! <_<

But start here and have some fun looking.

I found one a few weeks ago while hiking. I left it where it was, but I have enjoyed eating them in the NW while camping.

  8. Think about it this way: if you were reading a cache page, wouldn't you like to know that the last 5 people could not find? You could use that info to decide if you want to look for it, and the owner needs to have this info to check to see if the cache is still there.

If those 5 people were the type who don't log DNF's, this information would be lost to both the owner and those looking for it.

  9. The worst one I ever found was this one that is now archived for the same reason that I did not enjoy my hunt.

The cache itself was good, well hidden, and the park itself was a very lovely place to visit. However, the woodsy trails in the park were inhabited by men who, like me, were looking for something, but they were looking for something completely different.

I stumbled across a male couple who had found what they were looking for and enjoying it very much. <_<

So I guess the lesson is to be aware of the type of wildlife inhabiting public places and make sure that their animal behavior is family friendly.

  10. Well, I agree with you indygpser . .. I don't use lithiums since they are very expensive and I get great performance from NiMH.

I started this thread because there has been a lot of discussion/frustration in other threads concerning the fact that these units are not designed to work with lithiums even though Garmin suggests their use in extreme cold conditions.

So I think that the final answer is that lithiums will work at cold temps because their voltage output will be decreased below the threshold for the over-voltage circuit. Above freezing, they won't work until they have been drained somewhat.

  11. Thanks Bob. Certainly moisture is harmful to electronics, but I can't see how a sealed unit is going to be significantly harmed by being chilled temporarily under conditions that would be very normal in the field during the cold months.

But to answer my own question, I contacted Energizer and was referred to some techinical information showing the voltage of an AA lithium battery at various temps. It looks like these will produce 1.5 volts or less when below freezing, so using them as specified by Garmin should not be a problem.

  12. bob,

Garmin's specifications state the unit will work between 5' and 158'F.

My suggestion was to put the batteries in the unit and place the unit with batteries in the freezer to get it below freezing but still within operating temperature specifications.

Damaging the liquid crystal display or introducing moisture is no more likely in the freezer than it is when someone uses their GPSr during the winter.

But if someone wanted to heed your warnings which are not based on the reported specifications offered by Garmin, they could also simply freeze some lithium batteries and measure the voltage with a meter.

What I am trying to get at here is to determine what the voltage is for frozen lithium batteries. Alkaline and NiMH batteries have decreased voltage at low temps, which is why Garmin suggests lithium batteries below freezing. I suspect that the lithium battery voltage drops when frozen enough that the unit will not reject them, therefore confirming that Garmin's manual and specifications are not a pack of lies as has been suggested in other threads.

  13. About half of the time, my travelbugs take longer than 2 weeks to move. I don't really care though, they end up moving eventually. If one gets held up for a long time, I will email the person that grabbed it and they have always had a perfectly good reason. As long as they assure me that they will move it, I don't really care if it takes them a while.

Only once did someone hold a bug for several months and that really bugged me.

  14. The absolute BEST way to try caching is to contact your local geocaching organization and ask them if you can tag along with them someday. Chances are that someone will be happy to lend you a GPS and show you the tricks of the trade.

If you don't like it, then you only wasted an afternoon hanging out with weirdos and can spend your money elsewhere.

  15. Since you are going to be using it in a vehicle a lot, I would highly suggest the 60 series. All of the buttons are on the front of the unit and will be easier to operate while motoring.

I am impressed with the vistas though, and might consider one if I wanted a second unit to go along with my 60csx

By the time you buy all the maps you are going to need, the price difference between the units won't be all that much.

When I bought mine last week, www.gpsdiscount.com was the cheapest I could find at $406 including fed-ex shipping that got it to me in 1.5 days.

  16. If you are in a location where your gps achieves 30-50 foot accuracy and you are within 50 feet of the cache, it WILL jump all over the place. That is the time to put down the gps and start looking for the cache.

If you are a mile away and the pointer is telling you to go every which way, then there is something wrong.

  17. I don't use lithium batteries, but there seems to be some confusion/outrage over the fact that the new X units can't handle fresh lithium batteries. Garmin states that these units are designed for alkaline and NiMH batteries on page 2 of the manual, but suggests lithium batteries for use in below freezing weather on page 91 because alkaline (and I assume NiMH) batteries lose capacity at lower temps.

    Concerning lithium batteries:

What voltage to they produce when below freezing? I assume that they do experience some level of decreased capacity at lower temps, and this might be enough for new lithiums to be acceptable for the X units.

Maybe someone should put a 60CSX and some lithiums in the freezer and see what happens? Will the unit accept and power up using fresh frozen lithium batteries?

  18. The best use of the altimeter/barometer that I have experienced is to use it as a weather station while holed up in our basement safe-room during recent hurricanes.

I bought both my CS and CSX because I wanted to compass feature. Altimeter/barometer is just a bonus that I rarely use.
