  1. I bought one for my brother to get him into geocaching and using a gps for outdoor activities. Las month, he used it to navigate a sailboat through the caribbean.
  2. This is something that would be really great if Garmin added to their firmware. I would love to be able to hide all waypoints with a particular symbol. Guess I will go email them. . .
  3. If it is important that your cursor always stay on the road when driving, you can go into the map setup menu and select "Lock on Road" .
  4. Knowing Wal-Mart, I'm sure the new lamp posts are just a cheaper design than the old ones with the added geocaching features!
  5. If you are going to be hiking/camping for more than a day, consider how you will recharge the rechargable battery in that Magellan. The fact that those units do not accept standard AA batteries automatically disqualifies them from my shopping list. As you are making your first purchase, also consider one of the Garmin units that also have geocaching functions and accept both alkaline and rechargable AA batteries that can be purchased almost anywhere you can buy a cold can of soda.
  6. It would also be nice if hints were made as BRIEF as possible. Many of us now have GPSr's that can accept hints in a notes field, but that is limited to 30 characters for Garmin 60 series.
  7. It is a good unit if you do not want a color screen or very much internal memory for using maps. By today's standards, it is a bit dated but still a very good performing unit, especially for use around water since it will actually float. Current auction prices on ebay have it selling between $125-175 with many less than $150 and one recently went for only $90, so you can do better on the price.
  8. You should really consider purchasing some rechargable NiMH batteries and a charger once you get a GPS unit. If I wasn't using these batteries and charging them myself, I would have spent MUCH more on batteries than I have spent on GPS units. If you have to spend your own money on batteries, you will quickly begin saving money after just a few weeks.
  9. From everything I have read, these microSD cards are fragile and are not meant to be swapped in and out of devices on a very regular basis like the typical memory cards used in other devices. Once I get my 1GB card, it is going into the unit and not coming out until a larger card replaces it.
  10. Not everyone feels the need to vandalize beautiful protected natural places by carving their initials into trees, rocks, squirrels, etc. Please don't do this. If you do, please don't do it in any way that would identify you as a geocacher. Most of us are very respectful of our natural places and would not want anyone thinking that geocachers are the kind of people that do stupid stuff like this. If you can't hold back the urge to carve your name into some living thing, try carving your initials into your leg.
  11. I've had the same kind of "over the top" service from Garmin.
  12. Garmin did the same for my 60cs, sending me a brand new unit in the box to replace one that was actually a few months past the expiration of the warranty! I sent my unit to them on Monday and received a new one on Thursday! Thanks Garmin!
  13. I much prefer the use of standard easily purchased or recharged AA batteries in almost every electrical gizmo I carry. I typically carry my GPS, an FRS radio, and my camera. If it came down to it, I can always scavenge batteries out of one piece of electronics to power another. For me, the Lithium battery of the Magellan would be a prime reason NOT to buy it since I would be concerned that I would run out of power with no way to get more. In a pinch, I can stop at any gas station and buy a couple AA alkalines for either of my Garmin 60's Plus, additional Lithium batteries for the Magellan are $40! That buys a LOT of rechagable NiMH batteries. . .
  14. www.gpsdiscount.com Same price but $6.79 for Fed-ex ground. I ordered from them and received mine in 2 days. That is what I love about FedEX! If they can get it to you sooner they will. I have seen UPS purposefully hold a package at my local warehouse for 3 days in order to prevent delivering in 2 days when they promised 5 days! OT, but did I mention that I hate UPS?
  15. I agree that the $10 shipping is nuts for something that weighs about the same as a postage stamp! Still works out to a pretty good deal at less than $40 once all is said and done. But has anyone bought from them before?
  16. Do remember to calculate the cost of the maps when you are selecting your new unit. Mapping units with autorouting are essentially a waste of money if you don't spend extra for the maps. Yes, the autorouting mapping GPS units will give you turn by turn directions to a street address. You would not believe how much time and gas I save by learning new and better ways to get around my own town! Well worth the money, IMO. I am a big fan of Garmin and have recently upgraded from a 60CS to a 60CSX for the increased sensitivity and the expandable memory. Magellan fans will chime in about the features of their units too. It sounds like you really do want the advanced features like autorouting, so I would suggest the 60CSX for a Garmin unit.
  17. Actually, the more you use your GPS, the more you appreciate the high performance features. I use my autorouting GPS EVERY day. If you are brand new to geocaching and are the type who sometimes picks up and drops new hobbies quickly (and that is ok, many of us do that), you might consider getting a rather basic unit first. If you are thrilled with the game, then you can get another with all the maps and expandable storage and autorouting features and keep your older unit as a perfectly good GPSr to serve as a backup or to put in a friend's hand when you take them out with you.
  18. Cacheoholic, That is exactly why I would rather switch out a set of batteries more often than deal with plugging and unplugging a DC power cord!
  19. I just found this: http://www.erwincomputers.com/sdsdq1024a10m.html $29 after mail in rebate (plus shipping though) I have no experience with this company but the price is certainly excellent! Anybody deal with them before?
  20. the 2GB card is not yet available. mini and microSD are NOT the same. good choice on the 60csx. I love mine!
  21. 1GB sandisk microSD! $28.95 after rebate (plus shipping)!!! http://www.erwincomputers.com/sdsdq1024a10m.html
  22. Lee Valley Hardware! Best deal on super strong magnets! http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=...t=1,42363,42348
  23. I won't bother with micros unless there is a VERY good reason for visiting the site. IWREMOPTHFALM !!!!
  24. I don't expect this to happen all the time, but on my first caching day with my new 60csx this weekend, it led me to within 3 feet of two caches in dense tree cover. I was shocked!
  25. I am using a ram mount with a suction cup mount that was originally intended for a satellite radio. It works great. I used to use the external power cord, but have found that batteries last so darn long that I prefer not to have cords running all over the place if I don't have to. So I just bring an extra set of batteries if I need them. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the Ram mount chews up the rubber bumps on the 60 series. I have just learned to ignore this but pickier people than myself would be very saddened by this.
