  1. Quite frankly, with the incredible sensitivty of the SiRF III receiver, it doesn't seem to really matter one way or the other for almost any situation.

"They" say it is best vertical, but the darn thing picks up satellites from my basement so I'm not really concerned with it like I would be with an old yellow etrex with a patch antenna.

Don't worry about it and go out and find some caches!

  2. I think it makes the most sense to put both topo and navigator on the same cards for the same areas.

That way you can drive to the cache parking area using navigator and easily switch to topo maps for geocaching without having to monkey around with removing the batteries and messing with the delicate cards in the field.

  3.

I agree and you get less bounce in the woods. I sure wish I had the budget for the newer model..However

I wonder if you are picking up satellites or WAAS in your basement or indoors? (( I can dream of owning a "x" series -> can't I))

I do get a lock on the WAAS satellites indoors. I haven't gone downstairs to check on the WAAS satellites in the basement since the software/firmware upgrade.

Garmin just replaced my 60cs with a reconditoned one (after it was run over with a car), but I haven't even bothered to put batteries in it yet since the cxs is so incredibly nice.

  4. But to clarify your results (not including the comparison between your 60 and the 60csx), what you have experienced is the difference between the patch antenna that your legend had and the more sensitive quad helix antenna.

Your older 60 series unit does have a much better antenna than a "newer" Legend.

The new x series units have a quad helix antenna, but their huge advantage is the new SiRF III receiver that is much more sensitive than anything previously available. I get a solid lock on satellites in my basement, which is something that my 60cs will never be able to achieve.

  5. If you are going to build units with special geocaching features, then please allow us to do two things:

    1) hide our hundreds of geocache waypoints that clutter the map when we are not geocaching

    2) increase the number of characters in the comments/notes field for waypoints so that we can download the complete hints. Considering that we now have basically unlimited storage capacity with the new x units, this should not be a big deal at all to do.

    3) and I'd just like to thank you for making the best gps units out there!

  6. I think the idea of having a radio and GPS as one unit is neat, and I also like that you can see the position of another person on your screen, but I'd still steer clear of these because of the rechargable lithium-ion battery. I don't like the idea of having my gps run out of power in the middle of nowhere and not being able to toss a couple alkaline or rechargable AA batteries in it.

Most of the time I am using my gps, I am not using my FRS/GMRS radio. Both my GPS and radios take standard batteries and I like the peace of mind knowing I could get batteries at any gas station if it came down to it.

  7. I bought my brother a Legend and installed all of the topo maps within about 50 mile radius of his home area. Works great for him.

If you have a friend with the topo software, they can load the maps you want on it without having to buy an unlock code.

That would be about your cheapest way to get topo maps on a GPS.

  8. FWIW, the 60csx bugs are really quite minor although you'd get the impression in these forums that these units don't work at all. I have not had any significant repeatable problems with mine since getting it a couple months ago. The benefits of the sensitive receiver are incredible when compared to my older 60cs that I haven't turned that unit on since I got the new one.

So far, my 60csx has brought me within 10 feet of the caches I have looked for since getting it. my 60cs never was that good.

  9. At the time I bought my 60csx, it was cheaper than the 76csx.

Personally, I like the case design of the 60 series, but the two are essentially the same otherwise.

I have upgraded from a 60cs to the 60csx and have LOVED this new unit. It is by far the best gps I have had ever, and I've had a bunch of them.

At this point, I cannot recommend that any of my friends buy a Magellan unit due to their declining customer service reputation.
