  1. Here's mine. The black on the top is electrical tape because it started spliting after I pushed my branch insignia in and it started drying. Things I learned just muddling my way through this one. --yes, letting it cure first is probably a good idea. --Should have cut it off right above a ring, not below. Now I have a big cavity in the top of my staff. --The 550 cord needs pulled even tighter. It shifts around a bit with use right now.
  2. As near as I can tell, there is no military significance. Searching the site you referenced it explains Loge as a "Populated place." What makes you think it's military?
  3. If it's anything like the Casio GPS wach that came out a while back batery life is less than optimum shall we say..... $700! Gotta Getta Garmin. Foretrex 101 all the way! Better GPS functions for about 1/7th the price. Get a barometer/altitude watch for under $100 Get a good compas for under $100 Youv'e still got almost $400 left for some killer swag!
  4. I knew once I pulled rusty numbers out of my head someone would come back and correct me. thanks guys.
  5. There are (were?) 32 "block 1" Sats. Do to their orbits, only a certain number are visible from your location. I've had days where only about 8 were even "possible" from my location. I don't know how many "block 2" sats are up. (These are the ones with WAAS frequencies integrated.) All of this is from fuzzy memory. If you REALLY want to know check out Joe & Jacks GPS site. Just search for that and it will come up. It's like www.gpsinfo.com or something similar.
  6. GPX Spinner and Plucker. Free and Free and highly customizable. Long live the E!
  7. I made one out of some what I assume is bamboo I found growing in South Carolina. (Sure looks like bamboo.) Just found a hunk that I like in the field one day...scored it and snapped it to lenght using my pocket knife. From there I've put some tape on the tip, added some logos to the top and wrapped the handle with 550 cord. It's weathering/dring prett well. It has a cool design in the bamboo where some sections grew kinda wierd. I'll post a picture here one of these days. I'd like to make some more. My kids love 'em and they would be fun and fairly simple woodworking projects. (Since I had to get rid of most of my big tools and such in our last move.)
  8. Hooah! I'm military as well. I use mine to track mileage/pace when I run and on foot marches. I use it to find units in the field, pinpoint infiltration routes for exercises, navigate training routes, etc.
  9. I am a Tungsten|E owner as well. Bought it about 3 months before the Geocaching bug bit me. I have a Foretrex 101 as my GPS, and it works just fine alone in the car. I use the wrist strap on my rear-view mirror. Another option might be to hook your GPS to your laptop (if you have one) for in-car nav then un-plug the GPS to hunt the cache. You can get power inverters to run your laptop.
  10. When I'm organized enough to think ahead, I'll use rechargables in my Fortrex and carry a spare set of alkalines. Same with my digital camera. My problem with rechargables is that you have to remember so much stuff. Remember to charge them. Remember where I put them when the died and I swapped to alkalines. Remember to get them from that pocket/bag/car and charge them again.....oh, SO much work! Seriously though, I need to go dig my rechargables out of my car right now and charge them!
  11. I have a pair of Motorolas with weather channels as well and they are nice. I haven't used them caching, but have used them birding and use them at work a lot. They make up the unofficial communications net for Basic training units.
  12. That's probably it. I don't think I can turn off the backlight withthe Color LCD..... Maybe I cna spend some more time on the rifle range without my ear plugs...thatshould fix it.
  13. Recently my Palm Tungsten E has developed an annoying whine when the screen it on. It is fairly quite and quiet high-pitched. It is definitely coming from the screen because if I push on the screen area it effects/stops it and if I turn the screen ths sound moves. 1. Anyone else had a similar problem? 2. What is causing it? 3. What can I do about it?
  14. Hmmm. That's a good thought too. Definitely a lot of variables to tweak. I've re-compiled my first PQ about 5 times already getting it the way I want it.
  15. Thanks, Mopar. I was looking at all the configurable stuff you can do, just hadn't gotten far enough into it to see that apparently.
  16. DOH! You're right, I meant locationless..... Drats!
  17. I swore I saw this question and a answer a while back but a few searches here and looking over the GPX Spinner website didn't turn up anything so I'll just ask and let someone point me to whatever I missed. Q: Why are some of the waypoint names changed when I view the GPX Spinner output on my Palm? Mainly, not all of them begin with GC****. Is this something in the listings that I have just missed or is something funky happening during the "spin?"
  18. COOL! I thought they had been suspended as well. I've got an idea for a virtual, then, that I will write up and submit.
  19. So what you're saying is it's a micro with an offset container of ftf prizes, more or less?
  20. I'm old-school too. Blame it on Garmin. My first unit was the Garmin GPS-12. No R. this is a family-friendly activity, right? When I used to be active on sci.geo.satellite-nav everyone called them GPS.
  21. Having a cable between the two makes it easier to loose or break them both at once! Seriously, IMHO you don't need it. I just went paperless and all it coat me was the $30 to become a premium member. I use GPX Spinner and Plucker (I already used Plucker for other stuff but it is freeware.) That gets the info to my Palm PDA. Then I use EasyGPS (Freeware) that gets the waypoints to my GPS. I'm good to go. My Palm & GPS don't need to talk to each other when I'm alone in the woods. Ever see Space Odeysey 2001? If the HAL 9000 can do it..... Edited because I never notice my spelling mistakes until after they're posted....
  22. Interceptor body army stops bullets better than blaze orange. Good reminder. Everybody is somebody's idiot.
  23. I've come REAL CLOSE to the bathroom one a few times..... That's why I carry the insurance on my phone. I figure for $4 a month....I'm bound to do something stupid to it after a while and need it!
