  1. quote:Originally posted by Bear & Ting: .....just a quick question (and I supposed I will find out myself tonight), but does one search create a LOC file AND a Ebook??? Bear & Ting I thought I was a little off, then I looked at my GPS and discovered I accurate to 12 ft. Geocachers don't NEED to ask for directions! I only did one query, and I was sent a easygps file and a pda format file. Both files as attachments, from the one query
  2. I did my query last night. My file was waiting for me this morning via email. It contained an easygps file and a pda file. I downloaded it to my palm and checking it out now. It seems pretty cool, no problems as of yet to report. thanks Jeremy DutchBoy
  3. A friend of mine was interested in geocaching. I lent him my yellow etrex and he went to find a cache in Kentucky. A friend went along and brought his dowsing device to help locate the cache. They found the cache, with a combination of gps, dowsing, and clues. I thought this was interesting. Anyone else every here of geocaching via dowsing?
  4. Thanks GypsyMoth the beta fix from easygps did the trick. You da man. DutchBoy
  5. I did download the latest version, but no option for Garmin V.
  6. I have used easygps to upload to my yellow etrex with no problems. I just got a Garmin V, and changed the preferences to Garmin (other), V was not listed, but keep getting an error message when trying to upload to the gps. Any suggestions from other Garmin V users. I even reloaded the easygps program.
  7. I also know BruceS personally. I met him near St. Louis last fall, when we both arrived at the same cache site, at the same time. I have corresponded with him since then and knew he was coming to Indiana last week. He stopped in and saw me on his way through, as well as found several of my caches. He was expecting to do about 100 caches in a 5 day period. He is one cachin' machine.
  8. One of my caches was found by a non-cacher. It is an unbelievable story. Here is the log entry: Strange thing happened while preparing to search for this cache. I was in the Shoals area visiting a friend who had a 4WD ATV. His nephew also has an ATV which we went to borrow. Before cruising off with the nephew's ATV I mentioned that we were going cache hunting at the Fire Tower. Turns out, he had found this cache while out mushroom hunting and brought it home thinking some kids were playing around. He saw the information inside and found out it was a GPS/Internet game. He was about to return it. So we saved him the trip. Talking about a small world. That's my easiest cache find yet. I returned the cache to the location that I would guess it would have been located from the hint. Took: Glasses strap, Left: Golf Ball hole tool.
  9. My wife is tired of my forgetting to reset the mileage on my etrex. She wants her own pedometer. Any recommendations from current users?
  10. Just wondering if there is a way to show on a search, the benchmarks that you have already logged, such as with already found caches?
  11. I also have the basic yellow etrex. I usually do just as you said. I mark the waypoint, then walk away, come back, and mark it again. I do this about 5 times. Then I average the readings. Sometimes I even choose one of the waypoints, hit go to, then see how far it says it is off. Then I choose the best one. Hope this helps.
  12. I just noticed a new feature on the profiles. Under the found/hidden area there is a new listing for traditional. I think this is to keep track of traditional caches found, not locationless. Anyone else notice this.
  13. I have a family of 4. My children are 7yo and 10yo. We go on most of the hunts as a family. It is a great family oriented activity. Some caches may not be suitable for kids, and they usually warn you in the cache description. I purchased the beginner level Yellow etrex ($100). It is a great beginning unit for a family, for several reasons. At some point you will want to let your kids carry the GPSr. They will demand it after a while. The etrex is very durable, but make them wear the lanyard around their neck in case they drop it. You will soon want more in the unit, but I have have talked to several geocachers who bought a GPSr with more bells and whistles, but still use their yellow etrex in the woods in case it is dropped, etc. You can't go wrong with the price, and durability. Hope this helps.
  14. Will you make a way for us to search for locationless caches? Maybe a search by cache type on the search page?
  15. My wife does machine embroidery and we have been leaving these sew-on patches in caches as a trading piece. We have gotten lots of requests for extra patches. I think your idea sounds great. DutchBoy

  17. Anyone seen the latest from garmin? Anyone have more info on this gadget. GPSmap76s
  18. My wife likes to geocache as well as myself, but the kids run hot and cold. I have a 7yo boy and a 9yo girl. I usually save the caches with a park, museum, etc for them. I make them take turns finding the cache when we are close. I stop short and send them in the right direction. They each get to pick a prize, sometimes they just dont want anything. I always leave two trinkets if they pick two. Usually 3 hunts a day are their limit. I save the long hikes for my wife and I when then kids are in school. Another thing that has made a difference is that my brother in law (who is a woodworker) hand carved a hiking staff from beautiful twisted wood. They each have one and they cant wait to get into the woods with it.
  19. Can you please point me to this post? I really like this idea. A code word printed on the inside lid of every actual cache, or obtained from clues at a virtual cache site, that must be entered on the log-a-cache-page in order to post a "found it" entry. Regards, Tedoca Tedoca here is the quote: An excellent idea, actually. I'll be adding other tools as well for subscribers: 1. Time release geocache: a member/nonmember cache can be released at a specific time in the future. It will be listed with no coordinates. People can subscribe to it (like a watch list) and an email reminder will be queued to be sent when the cache is released. They can then click on the link in the email which will have the cache. 2. Password protected logs (both member/nonmember caches) - You can leave a password in the cache (or for virtual caches, an answer to a question). Only those with the password can log the cache. And, as an aside (I like hinting to things in weird places), there's a new game coming. It will be a unique variation of an existing idea with it's own subsite. Both members and nonmembers will be able to play. Jeremy Here is the link to thread: http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=3000917383&m=3890934993&r=4950912004#4950912004

  21. I recently read a post by Jeremy where he is going to put the confirmation code word as a password on the cache site. The person will only be able to log the find if he knows the password. Nothing need be done by the cache owner. I think this will be an improvement.
