  1. That's odd...So what is causing the lapse in detail? Also what Wisearse had before was some form of POI or preloaded map set or what? The only items to download to return the Legend to factory stats are the firmware upgrade and the marine POI database...Unless I missed the boat again!
  2. OK...I admit one count (Garmin not hosting) I must have missed that one,but there was a preloaded POI database on the Legend. Wisearse follow the above link and you can download the POI database. BTW it has more than just marine POI. I stand corrected on one count.
  3. I don't want to be a spoiler, but you all are half wrong! Wisearse is correct. There is a preloaded POI database in the Legend. When you load any Mapsource products you delete the original POI database. Garmin no longer hosts this file, but I have it. I too,had trouble with my unit and was told by Garmin reps to download the firmware and the POI database and reload. After I did that the unit worked fine. So if anyone wants this file shoot me an email through my geocaching profile. The major highways Wisearse is talking about IS the built in basemap, but the small roads and other searchable objects WAS the preloaded POI database.
  4. If you don't take Mr Diablo up on his offer...Gorilla Glue works wonders on wooden parts. It will mend it as good as new. I have broken a few hiking sticks and Gorilla Glue and a good clamp do the trick.
  5. I have the legend and vista C and they ONLY auto route with the base maps unless you buy the City Select NA or Europe Software. If you want door to door autorouting you need the software. Sorry.....
  6. I have both the older b/w and newer color units and for what its worth...The color unit solidly out performs the b/w unit hands down. The screen re-draws are faster,auto-routing is great(with proper software),battery life doubles, and I hold a good lock in most heavy cover. I really like my color eTrex. I am sure you would really like it.
  7. Forget the web updater...try and download your units software and do it manually. I hate the web updater garbage. It causes more trouble than it's worth.
  8. I think the caches at the old Air Force Base are really good. Crystal Lake Cache( GCJJ25 ) is a nice walk and usually is well stocked. If you like drive-by caches there are loads of them here, but be warned, check the logs before you waste your time on a missing pill bottle. Happy Caching!!!
  9. I think that is fair Keystone...but nobody has addressed the issue of Ebay. They ARE a commercial business. If someone has posted a link to an item and a forum member buys it ,Ebay gets money from all parts of the transaction. Any link to an Ebay item is just "plugging" Ebay.
  10. This thread seems to be a moot point. I have for years seen all kinds of postings for various items. It is either someone wanting to sell something or someone pointing to a link to sell something. I see no harm in passing on a link for an item that is on sale, but I don't think that said business should plug their products here. I also think Ebay links should be banned since they get money off the top of the final sale price.
  11. With all the above said...What about Ebay auction postings? Don't Ebay get a chunk of the pie? If you are going to sell something Geocache/GPS related, sell it through the forum NOT through an Ebay link!!! JMHO...
  12. Holy Cow!! Not again...Did anyone read the Ozguff saga??????
  13. I was thinking of this...Thanks Joe for supporting the idea. Right now, I think South Carolina needs a shot in the arm. A Geo-aid or Geo-woodstock type of weekend event would be the medicine needed. I think everyone that is involved in caching knows we need a ton of support right now.......
  14. Perhaps a Geo-woodstock or Geo-aid event in central South Carolina where ALL cachers from the state or anyone who wanted to come could. We could discuss the future of caching in the state and form sub-groups for the different areas. If we unite we could be one of the largest influences on state government. Invite the govenor and his family for a meet and greet. We as a group could help non-profit organizations and other agencies. It may be far fetched but possible.....Your thoughts please...
  15. Yep... You are correct! I for one am sorry. I was involved in hijacking part of this thread. The question was answered and this thread has no more purpose.....Any further discussion would only be fueling the fires.
  16. IMHO I think we are already toast! We have not advanced far enough in this short period of time to make a difference. With the Senate just around the corner, and Cieps pressing for closure, this anti-caching bill will pass in one form or another. South Carolina used to be a great place to cache until this bill reared it's ugly head. What makes it worse is...It's a complete fabrication...lies made to resemble truth.
  17. I post a DNF whenever I don't find the cache I am in search of. IMHO it serves a dual purpose. It informs others of possible problems with the cache or my failure to find it,and pops up a flag to the cache owner that a possible maint. visit may be in order. A DNF is just as important as SMILEY.
  18. I think these caches are kinda cool. They teach you about the general area in which they are placed. The cache in the quoted text is an excellent example of somewhere I normally would not go if I weren't caching. The container is also very cool. Good job David...
  19. WOW...I didn't know that. We pass through Townville several times a year on the way to Clayton then through Blairsville to TN.
  20. OH Yea....How bout on a light pole at your local discount retail shopping center!
  21. Numbers...Hmmm Numbers don't make you a better cacher, although they make you a more experienced one. Numbers to some represent a God-like complex and those are the cachers I avoid. Numbers to some are an obsession...one more...one more. I know people that have found thousands and are very respectable,on the other hand I know a few that have found thousands and would drown if it came a hard rain. A person is only as good as their word or actions. I believe in helping others enjoy the sport just as much as I do. If I could count all the times I have been to the same caches with newbies, I too would be in the thousands. So for now, I will gladly take my few hundred and catch more as I get a round to it. My personal favorite rule of caching is to pay it forward. The rewards of a smiling face and an "I found it!" make the game worthwhile to me!
  22. Here is my take on things...It is a cut and paste of my earlier post: I believe, due to people being relocated, family obligations,H3777, career changes, and other unforseen circumstances that there has been a lack of interest in holding the reins. I hope I'm wrong! The SCGA needs to bring together ALL of the states' active and future cachers for the good of the sport! Here is a list of commitee members currently listed on the SCGA website... www.iscga.org The Steering Commitee Members The commitee members at present are: TinSparrow - Leader and organizer Swamp Thing Waterbaron Hologram21 Jon & Miki Your best bet is to look their profile up ,send an email to each, and ask the questions you wish to be answered. I for one would also like to know the outcome! I haven't heard anything in quite a while from the SCGA...
