  1. Chat rooms are Chat rooms.. in real time... that is fine.. However, I clicked on his chat room link and got a security warning pop up that wanted me to install jIRC Applet. I realize that it is probably the software needed for the chat room but with the security warning I chose not to run the application at this time. Has anybody run that application and had problems with it? This computer was expensive to say the least..
  2. I would just watch for cops. Most of them are like muggles and don't understand the game.. I avoid those that I think would attract the attention of cops.. and I haven't had the necessity to explain what I am doing either.
  3. And that be Guiness I see?? Welcome to the world of free toys and knick knacks.
  4. Do they have an Andy and Bax store there... or an army surplus store? That is where I would look. Otherwise there is the internet.. and/or the yellow pages under waterproof containers.??
  5. Hi, Has Geocaching and Orienteering ever been combined? Are there Geocachers out there that are also Orienteers? I can imagine that there might be but don't know if the sports have been combined.
  6. Gee thanks guys.. See what happens when I leave this subject open... lol.. I knew there had to be a lot of better ways rather than returning over several days time.. That would be harder to do than you think given some of the places I am planning to put some caches.. Of course, going out there to maintain the cache isn't a problem.. Gives me another excuse to go camping..
  7. Keystone.. hmm, I didn't realize.. should have?? that it was on a faq.. oh well, like I said, it is now afer 4:00 AM.. I am working on a placement area..
  8. Thanks Divine,, such a quick response too.. I thought that averaging several was what they meant.. but didn't write it that way.. and yes, that is to divide rather than multiply.. It is 4:00 AM here.. need more coffee..
  9. First of all, I know what websters definition of averaging is.. However, in the rules for placing a cache, GC says to either average (GPS averaging) to get the coords for the cache to report on the page. If you can't do that. go to and walk away from the cache several times to get the coords.. and "take the best waypoint". Now, by "take the best waypoint" do they mean that as you are getting several waypoint readings.. do we take the lowest reading.. the highest... what is meant by take the best reading. OR??? do they mean that by getting several readings this way.. you are creating waypoints to then add up and multiply by the number of them to get an "average"? What do they mean by that statement?
  10. Deletion of Post by OccidentalErrant. Answer from PM. No need to post here.
  11. I found the Dino (what else) TB today. Surprised to find it too, although the cache posting said it might be there. Anyway, I logged it and He is on the move.
  12. Yeah,, I read that in the other thread too. But that was a fresh body. The cacher was right to vacate the area (irregardless of the drug deal going down in the parking lot). For all he knew, 'the killer'? may have still been in the area. But then report the finding later, which as I recall he didn't? I figure it this way, If I didn't do the killing.. I have nothing to hide. The burden of proof is on the police and I can always make an anonymous tip.
  13. Hmm,, Just some thoughts.. I don't know if a cacher found that or not.. but I do know that people go missing all the time and it would go without saying that geocachers may run into items like this along the geocaching trail. Right now, at least in this area, Brooke Willberger is still missing for 9 months now and nobody has found what may be left. Last night in the news they reported that they are seeking a similar black sweatshirt she was wearing when she disappeared. Asking the public if anyone has a similar one so they can compare fibers to get a match if they do find a 'body'.. It would go without saying that if a geocacher did find any body anywhere they would report it to authorities. We all should be looking for her even in the broader geological area of the Pacific Northwest. It is possible for a geocacher to find her, given the fact that we do trek into untrod areas. Just some thoughts though.
  14. I agree.. but then, why would anybody hide a cache where they (the hider) isn't getting good satellite reception.
  15. Hmm,, If that works for you fine.. Me? I rely on dead reckoning. When I get close to a cache, the compass in the GPSr starts rotating every which way. When that starts happening, I back up until the needle stabilizes. Then I get my bearing and distance to the target and direction while standing still. The human mind is a wonderful thing... I can estimate pretty accurately.. or, if I have to step off the distance in a straight line to the target, where the cache is likely located. The thrill of discovery is a good feeling of accomplishment, when I start looking for the cache after stepping off the remaining distance, I find it by my own presence of mind. Seems to me that you are taking your mind out of the equation and relying on machinery to do the whole job. What would happen if you were up in the woods, lost, hurt, and needed to move to get rescued. Would all that machinery do you any good if it were lost, broken or the batteries dead? I will rely on my own facilities, with the exception of the GPS as the only piece of machinery I use. To make geocaching any more technically sanitary is to take the fun out of it in my humble opinion.
  16. Hmm, Well, if the above is true and you would know more about it than I would, nightpilot, then that might explain the inconsistancies at each airport. That would lead me to believe that the airport security is pandering to the different regulations of the individual airlines.. so that one airline doesn't see a problem with GPS during flight.. They all must use it themselves.. and it isn't a transmitter, but a receiver, while another airline won't allow it. She did just start that job as an airline stew.. and you are right.. she may not know but it might be worth a try..
  17. Let's all go into the rubber chop sticks business and sell to all the airlines.. Just couldn't pass that up... sorry. Seriously though, Just found out that my daughter is coming home for a few days early this week. She is an airline stewardess. I'll ask her what the current fad is concerning this topic. I'll get back to ya .
  18. Just thought of something... maybe they didn't want ya to be making a timebomb whilest sitting in your passenger seat.. go figure..
  19. That's either government inconsistency... or they needed them for their flashlights.
  20. A few months ago, I took the entrance test for that job of Airport Security Screener. Those people that do that have to identify a suspicious looking article almost instantly. Let me tell you, it is hard to do that when there are other items all jumbled together in a piece of luggage. A GPS looks like a cell phone if it seen as an x ray picture. That (may) be why they are not stopping a person with a GPS in carry on. However, I would not want to risk having my GPS end up in a pile of confiscated items that were not allowed on the plane either, so I keep it in my checked baggage if I am taking it with me. Plenty of opportunity to use it on the ground when I get to my destination. As a result of that though, I don't know if the GPS unit that I have will give a correct travel speed as fast as jet airliners go. Pegging the speedo??
  21. Would it not behoove the hider to put the cache in an area that the general public doesn't go? Ergo, allowing for a higher quality cache for lack of fear that it would get muggled if found in a higher traffic area by the general public? Also, by quality, is it meant that the quality of the hide is lower or the quality of the contents? I am just getting started with this hobby. Of the three that I have found (which were pretty easy.. Those that I haven't found yet but did look for are still there and unknown to me, so I could say that they would be average in difficulty, but they are micros and I can't say anything about the contents.
