  1. Scarab... likely just a string tied into the bottom of a film canister, and as it is pulled out, it pulls up, thus pushing the cache up...

I have looked through many pages of this thread and one problem I have is people using these next to impossible containers or covers in areas where there is no possible way unless someone turns over every single rock, tree bark, leaf, etc...

There are a few I have looked for in the middle of the woods (which covers a majority of this area) that is the same way as others mentioned here. I have had problems finding just normal cammo thermos or green containers in the thick woods here, much less a super stealthy nano/micro. The way I see it, If I cannot find it in 15-20 minutes of searching the area, I will just move on. I have a job, wife and kids and do not have time to play around search for hours just to log a visit. I am not saying that these type of containers are not ok, just saying I won't spend much time looking for them.

Add in GPS units that have problems with exact coordinates in wooded areas (mine does not) or does not have WAAS capability (mine does) and you can be a good quarter mile off making it impossible to find.

about scarabs cache... thats awesome! I'd really like to replicate this!

@mddbkzr, I cant visualize your take on it, I guess I dont see how that would bring the cache above the point where the string is, also about hard hides, thats what rating are for always take that into account, several times I've found myself looking for a cache for a while, one with a recent log, so I have it in my head that"its here somewhere" then look at the 4 star rating and realize its gonna be a good one, and for me, at least, keeps me in this game... if geocaching was just a buch of lpc's and rusted altoids tins I would have been bored with caching after a month... just my POV

  2. Wouldn't the difficulty depend on the lock, though?

A single pin lock wouldn't really require specialized knowledge. Depending on the padlock, special skill isn't required either. You can google shims and have a tool fashioned in about 5 minutes.

I also considered a cache using a lockable SquareD box (cammoed to look like a Geocaching Monitoring Station) with all the pins removed. Essentially it would look locked, but one just needs to insert something as a tension bar and turn the lock.

    Cool idea either way.

I say go for it remove all but one or two pins (non serrated or spooled) since you are the owner of the lock, and giving written permission to open the lock, its not illegal... the only thing i would suggest is making or buying just a simple tension wrench and hook or rake, and ATTACHING it to your cache, so you can avoid people carrying around lock picks...

great idea! might have to borrow this one from ya, as I have all the components laying around...

  3. Ehhh... we're gettin away from the point... I have a 40, it rocks.. but none the less get your friend a 30, if thats in your budget (20 is a bit of a relic)... you'll be rewarded with a cachin buddy (priceless) and the 30 will become a backup for you both one day... ask for an umbrella from him and get those shoes muddy, who says you cant cache in the rain...

  4. welcome to the addiction! great reason to get out and explore places you would never go, "trails" you never thought where there, as for the handle, a lot of people use "team" names... something to think about... unless your 7 yo. is really independent :)

  5. funny thread

went too jail for the first time on memorial day weekend, (awesome) while looking for a cache... apparently I had a warrant...

still haven't been back too that one...

here locally there is a BART officer turned cacher... found the cache where she busted a guy, and now she does it... go figure LOL

  6. Silly Kit Fox. Offering rational solutions is not desireable.

    LOL...

I do agree that nano's should have they're own place...

for the record, I don't mind nano's... they make for great legs, (get your mind out of the gutter  on multi's... and other "near virtual' locations...

  7. Hmm - I wonder what show. . . .

Just avoid using printed, or electronic logos, artwork or other copyrighted works. The concepts themselves as intangibles should be OK.

You won't profit from it and in fact are really promoting it (gratis) so I doubt any attorneys will be seeking you out.

I agree, and thanks for the idea!

    has this been done?

where do you get the "Geo-Caps" From???

I made them with photoshop, unused bottle cap's from the brew shop, a lot of patience and a few beers :D if you have any questions about the process... shoot! im also happy to email anyone the alignment template in compressed .psd format... (this was the bane of this project: printer alignment)

  9. wow, thanks for the kind words...

more time than money, between design and printer alignment issues, I probably have about 14 solid hours... im a bit anal LOL

each unit is under 25 cents!

If you like what you see, go to your local home brew shop, and get the caps, avery makes the 1in round labels, (walmart, target, staples) and email me if you need the photoshop template for alignment

    Chrysalides,
