  1. I have a question regarding Garmin TOPO maps. I am looking at an Oregon 750t (which comes with TOPO Canada) I see that there is a TOPO 24k and 100k for the US maps but wondering if there is the same for Canada or just the one map. Obviously 24k being much more detailed that the 100k, I'd rather get more detail if it is available. Cheers.
  2. Hi all. After many years with my Magellan Triton 400, I had finally sorted out all of the bugs and my own user errors and we were getting along great.... then I left it on the roof of our van and let's just say gravity is not a friend of the Triton. It seems like the whole world uses a Garmin and neither GPScity and GPScentral even carry Magellan units so I figure it might be time to join team Garmin. I will be using the GPS mostly for geocaching with some hiking etc thrown in. I had a TOPO map for my Triton and loved it so I want to get it again with whatever unit I buy. I have a few questions about the 700 series and being new I hope someone here will have the answers. 1) Being a touch screen, is there a way to lock the screen so that if it bumps or touches something in my bag or pocket it won't change pages or start doing something it isn't supposed to? 2) I understand that you can load geocaches via WIFI when you have a computer etc. How many caches can you upload at once? When I reconnect at a later time will it delete any caches that have been discontinued so I don't accidentally search for caches that aren't there anymore? Will it automatically update all of the caches I have loaded onto it or do I have to go back to different areas on the map to update the logs etc of the caches? Will it indicate caches I have already logged with a different icon so I don't accidentally search for a previously found cache? 3) Can caches be deleted from the unit after they have been found? I looked at possibly getting an E-trex 30x but by the time I buy one and then buy the TOPO map of Canada for it, the difference in price between the E-trex30x and the Oregon 750T is only about $200. While $200 is $200 I don't want to buy something that will be badly outdated in a couple of years and I want something that I can easily load caches onto so I don't have to constantly be guessing where I'll be caching next. I hate relying on my smartphone for impromptu caching as the battery just doesn't hold up for more than one or two caches. Thanks
  3. Hi all. I am having major problems with my Magellan Triton 400. I can't load any caches onto it. Every time I do it won't even recognize that I have my GPS plugged into the computer. I have tried uninstalling Vantage Point and the Magellan Communicator and reinstalling them with no success. Often times when it finally looks like it might send a cache to the GPS I get a blue screen on my computer telling me either IRQL_not_less_or_equal or page_fault_in_nonpaged_area. According to Vantage Point the GPS and software are up to date. I never have any issues with the computer running any other programs or websites. It is a newer Asus computer running Windows 10. Is it my computer? Is it that my GPS is too out of date? Is it that I'm just not computer savvy enough? This is really cutting into my caching time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially with folks who have experience with the Triton series.
  4. Hi all. Not sure if this is the right section for this, but here goes. I have a Magellan Triton 400 that I have been using since 2010-ish strictly for geocaching. The last year or so I often run into problems loading caches onto it. I always load by searching the old map and clicking "send to my GPS". Often times it won't even recognize that I have my GPS plugged in (and yes I always select "connect to PC). I've quadruple checked that I have the latest Magellan communicator installed. When I finally do get it to connect, I get about 2-3 caches loaded before I get a blue screen on my computer saying that it has "run into a problem and has to re-boot!" This happens regardless if I'm using Google Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer. Does anyone have any recommendations for what I can do to solve this? My caching is really suffering because of this and my phone works in a pinch but the battery won't hold up to more than two or three caches out on a trail and then I need to recharge. Should I uninstall all Magellan software and try reinstalling it? Is my Triton just too old to be compatible any more? Is my computer the issue? The computer is an Asus currently running Windows 10 but this also happened when I was running Windows 8. Thanks.
  5. I know that most of the world uses the metric system, and as far as I know, metric systems logs dates as day-month-year, going from smallest to biggest as it does with everything. Think mm, cm, m, km etc. So I think I'll stick with that. Thanks for all the responses everyone!
  6. So which is the real "11-12-13"? If you go by the American way of writing the date, today is "11-12-13", but if you go by canada or most of the rest of the world, December 11, 2013 would be the "11-12-13". Wondering which one to try and get. I might try to get both to be safe, and I know that there won't be a souvenir either way, just curious for curiousity's sake. Anyone know if someone is making up a coin to celebrate "11-12-13"? I'd love to add a new coin to my collection. Cheers!
  7. Hey all. After a few years in the caching game I have collected a few coins and would like to find an album that I can display them in rather than have them sit in a box in a drawer. I'm looking for suggestions on size, especially pocket size for the pages inside the album. Preferable I'd like clear pages so you can flip the page and see the back sides of the coins. I know geocoins come in a variety of sizes, so I'm looking for an album that will accommodate that. Obviously it doesn't matter if a coin is small and doesn't fill its pocket on the page, but I'd hate to have a large coin (like my 12 12 12 coin) not fit. Suggestions please, my Wife wants to know what to get me for Christmas! Thanks.
  8. I was not able to attend an event, but I did get out and spend the day caching! I grabbed 12 caches along a rail trail today to celebrate 12/12/12.
  9. Thanks Pup Patrol! You link to the "instant notifications" was exactly what I was looking for! I just wanted a faster way to be notified of local group events and new caches. Most local events are full before I get the monthly email from geocaching.com. Hoping now with the notifications I might get my first FTF!
  10. I've heard that I can add an area to my watch list. Example, I live in Peterborough, I can set the whole city of Peterborough to my watch list and every time a new cache or event is added in this area, I would get a notification. Is this possible? I can't seem to figure it out just nosing around on my account. I would really like this feature as by the time I finally get my monthly email about new caches and events, I have long missed the FTF and the events are usually full. Thanks for your help.
  11. Hi all. So I registered to be a member of the Ontario Geocaching Association website so I could post on their forums, specifically the Kawartha sub-forum so I could keep in touch with other local cachers. I filled out their registration about a month ago, but still have not received a confirmation email. When I go to log in, the site tells me that my user name has not been activated yet and that I should contact the administrator. I've searched that whole site and can't find a way to contact the admin. Help? Suggestions? OGA admins who might be on this site as well? Thanks.
  12. Had a great time at the PAKA breakfast today! It was really nice to meet so many fellow cache enthusiasts at one time! Enjoyed hearing others' stories and advice from more seasoned hunters. Even got help dialing in the accuracy on my GPS! Hope I can make it out next month too! Went home after the breakfast, grabbed my faithful cache hunting partner and set out on our first winter cache hunt! Stayed close to home and found 3 out of 4 we went looking for. Came home wet and cold but had big smiles on our faces! Cheers, VgoSprocket
  13. Excellent! Look forward to meeting you on the 5th.
  14. I'm looking for members of the PTBO cache club. Not sure of your proper club name but I know that you meet once a month at a local restaurant for a breakfast meet and great. I was wondering if this is open to new comers and if so where/when it is? I started geocaching last summer and am really enjoying it and would love to meet others in the hobby to share stories, tips, friendship. Cheers, VgoSprocket
  15. Hey all. So I started caching this past summer and I'm hooked. I have a Magellan Triton 400 and am very happy with it except that the base map is very very plain. No details. I have heard that you can get SD cards with detailed maps on them but I don't know where to buy these or what to get. I live in Peterborough, ON. Canada and would like a very detailed map of my province. I want it to have a detailed road map on it as often when I am caching I have to guess how to get to the cache and where to park near the cache or else look it up on google maps and then print it off, waste of paper. Would love if my co-pilot could just watch the gps and tell me where to turn. I would also really like it to have detailed topography if possible so I can tell if I am heading into a swamp etc. Would also love it if it had trail maps on it (probably asking too much with that last request!) Would prefer user testimonials/suggestions, but even tips on where I can find these SD cards online to research would be great. Cheers, VgoSprocket
  16. Hey all. So I started geocaching last summer and I'm hooked. I got myself a Magellan Triton 400 and am very satisfied with it. My only complaint is the base software is VERY basic and I need some SD card maps and need advise. Too often I go searching for a cache but only the most major roads (with no names) appear on screen as well as rail lines and water ways etc. Any suggestions for a REALLY detailed SD card? I live in Peterborough ON so I am only interested in SD maps for my area/province. I want one with very detailed road maps on them so I can figure out where to park the car to go hunting without having to guess and I would like to have topigraphical info as well. Also if there is a map out there with trail systems mapped on them that would be great, that way I don't have to try and guess which trail takes me near the cache and which one veers the opposite way! Cheers, VgoSprocket
  17. Oh I'm definitely hooked. I've been wanting to get into caching for a long time but just never seemed to have the $$ to pick up a GPS. We got our first dog (Sprocket) about a year ago and she is an Alaskan Husky/Golden Retriever mix and she is pretty high energy. I try and take her walking every day but find sometimes I get bored. So far I find the geocaching to be a great way to keep me interested too and it seems to be extending our walks! Sprocket is definitely loving the caching! She gets to go into the woods and parks and I usually let her off leash while I'm there and she just loves to run back and forth and explore while I find and log the cache. As for choosing the Magellan, so far I am very pleased. Being new to GPS, I asked a good friend who is an avid cacher who also does a lot of back country paddle and camping trips for advise. He uses his GPS almost daily. He has had 2 Magellans so far (currently using the Triton 400) and has had nothing but good things to say. I know that there are more advanced GPS out there, but for the price the 400 seems to be more than enough for me. Cheers.
  18. Just headed out this AM before work and found our second cache! Nice and close to home made it an easy trip to do before work. Only complaint was the mosquitoes! I got mauled! Oh well. Can't expect to go bush wacking and stand still to log my visit and not get some bites! Looking forward to my day off so we can try some cache's that aren't in our neighbourhood!
  19. No PM required. After you submit a log (any log, even a note) you will see a button for uploading a picture. Thanks! I'll give it a try.
  20. Hey all. Received a Magellan Triton 400 from my Wife for my Birthday this past weekend. Headed out this AM and found my first cache! Very excited. It is amazing how many caches are so close to my house! My cache partner Sprocket was not much help in locating the cache, but she seemed to enjoy the hunt and really enjoyed taking a swim while I was busy writing in the log book! Thank goodness I brought a towel to put on the seat! Can't wait to do some more caching! Cheers.
  21. Hey all. I was trying to log a visit but can't find where to upload a pic I took. The cache owner says they would like to see pics. Do I need a premium membership to do this? Help please. Thanks.
  22. Hey all. Am interested in getting into caching as a way to exercise with my pooch. I am interested in buying a Magellan Explorist GC and would like some opinions. I have never used a GPS and I want one that is easy to use but that isn't too simple so I get bored with it. I know that the GC is set up especially for caching, but can I use it for other uses? If I go back-country camping can I use it to guide me through the lakes/rivers to my site? Can I set coordinates on it and have it lead me to them? Can it be used on the road? Is the road map detailed or can you upload a more detailed road map to it? Thanks, SH
