  1. If a bear wants FTF, he can have it. Yeah but he won't post it on his profile, so your good! I won't either, so I guess you can have it. Don't tempt me, I am somewhat shameless.
  2. To be honest I am still laughing about this entire thread. But I would agree with KW, If you have a question for someone you should ask them directly. No need to have an audience. Besides, isn't the new Ironman Challenge cache already up and running (GC33XXF)? Hasn't the purpose of this discussion run its course?
  3. Good point GEO WALKER. I once tried to muggle a mountain top. I was exhausted before getting it to the bottom. At least now the mountain top is a plateau and very flat! lol Now we know it was discussed. We just don't know why PMO ECs were allowed continue?  I never really thought about it since I am elitist swine. I agree with the previous statement about why someone would want to limit visitors, it is perplexing.

  5. I am positive that you don't need to register them to a car. You would only do that if you were going to use them on your car. Otherwise they are just unregistered plates.
  6. It might be useful, but I don't see it being necessary. If it is for validation purposes it can still be faked like anything else. As a *coughcough* 'finder of newly published caches' I do usually post a time with my log for the sake of clarity. Neat idea.
  7. I'll bite. Why would Signal side with the CO when the only real reason to delete a log is if it is inappropriate or not supported by the physical log?
  8. When I looked at all the upcoming events within 100miles there are still only 37 upcoming events. So we still aren't talking about a huge amount of events.
  9. CITOs are rare and they get their own type. You people and your numbers!
  10. I'd prefer the new cache type. Too many CO's don't bother with attributes and the reviewers ignore and/or don't enforce them. Someone else mentioned putting keywords in the cache name but I can't filter on that in a PQ. Are we really anticipating that many OGH style events. As it is there are only about 8 within 30 miles of me right now, I can't imagine that it will end up being 100s of caches that would cause confusion.
  11. I like to send an email explaining why they will get a "Log Deletion" notice and then do what needs to be done. It has never been met with a negative reaction... yet, lol.
  12. Just did this one recently GC2HNAM and I have to admit that it was a very impressive cache. Unfortunately we came in the pouring rain and so pics weren't practical, but I will return. This cache was so big that some of the swag was too large to carry. I loved it and so have many that have visited!
  13. I gotta admit that I am indifferent as towards how they would be represented on my profile and whether or not they would be distinct in a search, but I am a big fan of this kind of event cache idea. I think at the core of many event efforts us the desire to cache together, so this will be a good fit. I have noticed in my short tenure that many people run into the wall of describing their event in a way that doesn't elude to the desire to be an organized cache hunt. There are of course some events that are about eating wings and hiking, but many still come down to caching together at some point. Glad that GS has allowed us to be a test group.
  14. I don't know what you tried so far, but that has happened to me in the past. I load my gpx files and when I jump in the car there is nothing on it. I find that I need to actually remove the batteries once (I know this sounds like voodoo) and then try reloading the gpx files. That usually works for me. Give it a shot, if there is something really wrong you might have to rely on getting some warranty work done, but that will take a while. I have worked with Garmin's online/telephone assistance and they can guide you through a soft reset and some other troubleshootiing methods.
  15. LOL, Nice! The funny thing is that for all the barking and yelling about the safety of it, it really comes back to permission. Safety is the onus of the user and not the responsibility of TPTB (at least until they get a phone call from the fuzz or a lawyer). I have seen ridiculously dangerous caches in the woods that are viewed as "adventurous" because they are in a more natural setting. It is a weird double standard.
  16. But why are we constituting this as spoiling a cache and not as flattery. When a CO creates a unique cache isn't it for the enjoyment of his/her fellow cachers? I really think there is a backwards spin on the efforts here. I feel that what was being done here was merely a case of admiration, not malicious unraveling of well laid plans. By allowing a large forum to see what was deemed as impressive to one geocacher, we are all able to marvel at the creativity of someone else in our realm of interest. If you don't want people to see it why would you publish it? Allowing anyone that wants to go and see your hide with little to no control of who will be going and actually manipulating the hide itself. I really just feel that it is a case of mistaken motivation. I would be honoured to have a cache of mine regarded as "worth letting people know about it". But that is just me.
  17. I have been lurking on this thread for the most part and have been trying to think of an approach that would not be beyond the educational requirement and yet still pose a substantial challenge. I find that ECers are conscientious about experiencing the cache to the full and as such this might be a neat way to address a high difficulty logging req while still making it feasible for most learning levels. I think, lol!
  18. Really? How is anything fun without competition . I even read books competitively. Must be my weak self-esteem!
  19. Yup that is for sure! Another very true statement, a good approach to it as well That couldn't be more wrong. No one awards the FTF, it just is! You are either the First to find the cache or you are not, there is no awarding. If I say that I am alive, others can agree with it but they don't gift it to me on their say so. It is an event, an occurence, not a title. By what ever standard you wish to measure it only means that you were the first to find the cache. Yup wherever they sign it. It isn't about satisfying the CO it is about finding a little plastic container first. I have seen some controversy about FTFs in the past but never to the point of getting upset. There are tons to get and there will be tons more in the future, last thing you want is negative emotion clouding something so fun.
  20. We do have to factor in the diff between an EC and a geocache on the rating system. I think that just about any EC is harder to log than a standard geocache of the same rating, since it requires some kind of measurement or assessment above and beyond merely signing your name. The arguments made concerning difficulty (when compared to a standard geocache) don't take into account what is required to log the cache, it has more to do with the steps before being able to log the cache. Since a standard geocache is loggable once the log is signed, isn't all the effort that goes into retrieving the log what the difficulty is all about? I could see a set of logging reqs that has a cacher take an average at the same time for a long period of time (a week, a month, maybe even a season) and averaging the stats for all those visits as a method for incorporating a very high Difficulty rating, maybe even a D5. Or the common technicality of requiring a tool/specialized equipment is another way.
  21. I couldn't agree more. That is pretty frustrating when you are about to pursue a "needle in a haystack" cache and you get mocked by the possibility of a hint only to see that there is nothing there but a statement of its absence.
  22. Hey, this is a very niiiiiice thread. No one jumping on the OP. Probably useless to him not being premium and not having access to Pocket Queries, but I know there's a badgen macro for GSAK that makes all sorts of badges for the profile. Do they have anything for FTF? Yup, I use it on my profile page. That is because I am one of the overwhelmingly selfish players in our game . It should always be about personal effort not bragging rights. You don't get anything for filling your grid, or for caching for one year straight or for an FTF. Well, nothing but satisfaction. I like to run for caches, so do many others. There is a weird stigma associated with FTFers, mostly because (as with most things) there are a few that make it seem really strange to everyone else. That is, umm, one very long and colorful profile there, Fred. I thought about the COG (Central Ontario Geocachers) awards that you can award to yourself, but I didn't think they had anything for FTF. Either way, I suppose, you have to have multiple FTF's, all on the honor system, before you can award yourself a COG badge or one in GSAK. Yeah sorry, I am a bit of profilephile. I love all the stats and badges and all the razzmatazz! The bad part is that I just love compiling all the little bits of data just to look at. I don't have stats that are good enough to brag about, but they look so pretty!
