  1. I read the site you quote and I ordered, among other things, three of the containers to which you refer. Mine have white lids. I haven't put them out yet, but they do seem to be VERY strong. They come with the lids not screwed on all the way because they are pop bottle lids with the ring still attached. The inside seems to be very very close to the same diameter as the mouth opening, maybe just a tiny bit bigger. The local Hobby Lobby sells something very similiar to these baby soda bottles in the Science section as a plastic Test Tube. 3 for like $5.99.
  2. Unless ammo cans have changed drastically in the recent past, they don't utilize a non-gasketed slip on lid. As I recall from the last time I opened one, (about 5 minutes ago), ammo cans utilize a high pressure compression gasket incorporated into a rather durable lid. As such, I would rate them as quite a bit better at repelling moisture than what is, essentially, a mini cookie tin. No container will keep moisture out if opened during a hurricane, but ammo cans will keep moisture out in all but the most drastic scenarios. A metal tin whose lid simply squeezes in place probably can't make the same claim. For an arid environment, I imagine those spice containers would do fine, but if your state has more than, say, 1% average humidity, I'm thinking they might not be adequate even when tucked out of direct contact with rain. I am curious as to why no one seems to use a dissecatent pack for absorbing moisture in some of these cache containers?
  3. Nope I camo´d it with the stuff which they sell at these model train shops. Predried or so. And they have all kinds to match almost every scenery ;-). Just be careful with the clue. If it is too agressive it might turn brown indeed. Take a look at this Link. Just to give you an rough idea what´s available. My Mom is a real nut when it comes to plants and Flowers. years ago I bought her a lawn ornament made from concrete which she wanted to enhance. We gathered up some moss from a large rock near her home and ground it up using an old coffee grinder. We mixed that with Buttermilk and carefully poured this mixture over the surface of the concrete lawn ornament. Within a few weeks the entire piece was covered with freshly grown and very real moss. I have since been contemplating this technique for a cache idea I have.
  4. When I first got on the internet I wanted a nickname that denoted Pirates...well none of the services would allow me to use numbers before letters to create an ID. so! rat31465 rat............ rat is self explanatory. 314........... Mathmatical designation for Pi 65............ a Unique identifier which happens to be the year I was born. Technically I guess I am rat pi 65!
  5. Being new to this Hobby I began a search for information on a Survey Disc I found near my former place of residence. It is marked as a (Corps of engineers) Survey Marker. Is there any interest in tracking this type of marker?
  6. I am a FNG and want to first intoduce myself. I am a 44 year old College Sophmore seeking a degree in Environmental Science from Drury University here in Springfield Missouri. I have many hobbies with Geocaching being my newest. Part of the appeal of this new past time stems from my growing up in a large family. If I bought candy, or toys then it was imperative to squirrel them away so that other siblings wouldn't find them without permission. I became very creative in how to hide things from my Brothers and Sisters. My question is just how creative is being to creative? My thoughts are that for my first hide I plan on making it very easy so that anyone wishing to make a find can do so with relative ease. For my second I have a very devious container already built which will be hidden in plain open sight and I am hoping will give even the most veteran cacher a run for his money. Then from that point on just keeping them somewhere in between. All the while staying within the guidelines of course. I look forward to chatting with many of you on the forum in the near future.
  7. Hello from Springfield Missouri. My name is David and I have only recently gotten into Geocaching. What peaked my interest was finding a Corps Of Engineer Survey Marker on a Storm water overflow near my last place of residence. I began searching for information on this marker just to satisfy my own curiousity and I happened upon the subject/hoby of Geocaching. My wife is disabled and makes it hard for us to get in the Wilderness areas as we once had and I hoped this would be a good hobby for the two of us to share with our two-year old Grandson. My first question is still with regards to the Survey Marker I found. I can't seem to find any information out about U.S. Army Corps of Engineering Survey Markers. Where or how does one go about researching these markers? Thanks in advance and I look forward to interacting more throughout this forum. David
