  1. I bought a Nuvi 205 to use on my job as a Driver/Transporter and stumbled upon GeoCaching while looking for tips on how to use my GPS. While I still consider myself a newbie at Geocaching I found the following website to be helpful with many tips and tricks on how to get the most out of the Nuvi GPS for Geocaching. http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.g....html#page1text I have recently upgraded to a Garmin GPSMAP 60 Csx and am very happy with it...my main reason for wanting this upgrade was for the waterproof ability the 60 Csx has as I was always getting caught out in the rain.
  2. Lets see..Since I turned 7-years old I have hunted alone, Fished alone and have even taken several overnight Hiking trips alone...so Geocaching alone isn't that big of a stretch for me. Although I can't say I would recommend this for everybody...I actually enjoy solo caching.
  3. What? You didn't learn to sew? Man, I have my own sewing machine. The fabric would have to be vinyl or similar for the white side. Cloth will absorb dirt through capilary action. I used to. I was in the Navy. We had to learn to sew. After that, I sewed some cases for handmade flyrods (still have those after 30 years!) but my eyesight isn't up to sewing or tying flies anymore. I did, however, sew a button on a shirt tonight (about 15 minutes ago, oddly enough!)... I can't remember when the last time was that I did that! Wasn't that about Fifeteen minutes ago? Sorry...Just couldn't resist taking the jab.
  4. Its always my policy to immediatley and unequivically tell the truth to anyone of authority who might question me. Security Guards, Police Officers, Home/Land Owners...etc. And especially if it will ease the minds of home owners suspicious of the activities going on near their homes. But, I am rather vague and even outright evasive to any others who may question me while in public areas if I perceive them as a possible threat to the safety of someone elses caches.
  5. Wow, didn't realize this was such a Hot Button issue. I think I will just scrap this idea all together. But just to set the record straight...In the State of Missouri it is legal to take pictures or record someone if a warning sign is posted. How do think department stores get away with putting security cameras in dressing rooms etc....? I know this because I have worked in high security buisness with Loss Prevention, Store Security etc. Start looking on the front doors of the buisnesses that you frequent and you will notice posted a sign...sometimes quite small that reads simply. Video Surveillence in Use. That little warning Sticker is all that is required here in Missouri.
  6. Dangerous....YES! More people are killed in this country every year by White Tailed Deer than by bears, cougars or any other large predator. Especially Dangerous because you were betwen a Mother and her young. I was on a muzleloading hunt once and was charged by a White Tail Buck...he ran up to within 5 yards of me snorting and stamping the ground with his head lowered. I had shot and missed only moments before and as such was standing there with an unloaded .50 cal Rifle in my hand. This is one of those moments that is only funny when it happens to someone else. Lying still is the young fawns only real defense mechanism...I bet you did nearly mess yourself...glad no one was hurt.
  7. A sign/disclaimer posted would aleviate any such legal issues and would not be any more obtrusive than the multitude of security cameras. As for taking pictures of people without their permision...The highest courts in this land have issued rulings that taking someones picture without their permission isn't in itself a violation of privacy. How do you think the Papparazzi stays in buisness. As for putting a camera in a Cache...If I were to do it myself...I would probably state this on the cache listing. Then anyone who didn't wish to have their Photograph taken could always pas up the cache and just move on to the next one.
  8. These were all issues which I had contemplated...I have used trail cameras in the past for hunting and was considering this idea for a very large cache container I have in mind. Its an old Truck bed Toolbox made of steel. It will be placed on Private Property belonging to a friend of mine and anchored to the ground via Concrete and All thread. I have even considered welding a smaller steel box inside the conatiner that would house the camera. Thermal triggered camera would eliminate the problem associated with tree movement...but inside a container movement of the lid opening would be the only movement detectable anyway. I'm gonna mock something up out of wood to play around with in the near future I think.
  9. Which exactly what my Nuvi 200 did. It got me addicted and I have just this week ordered a Garmin 60 CSx. Even with all the shortcomings mentioned about the Nuvi...I have to say that I found this unit to be easy enough to operate once the tricks are learned. I found the lack of the Nuvi being water Resitant to be its biggest shortcoming. As for battery life...With the rechargeable system I have battery life off the cord was in the 4 hour range. Long enough to make several finds, get back to the vehicle and plug it back in. http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.g....html#page1text This site was very helpful to me.
  10. I stumbled upon a Hunter's Thermally Triggered Trail camera recently while searching for a cache in the woods. Curious if anyone has thought of placing one of these cameras inside an ammo can or larger cache container to catch the expression on the faces of the person who opens the cache? These Gotcha moments would be priceless pictures to post. These cameras can be had as cheaply as $50.00 and up, depending upon the features...some are programmable and have digital video capabilities as well. They are available in 35mm as well as digital.
  11. I am a Sophmore at Drury University here in Springfield Mo. Seeking a BAC in Environmental Sciences. Trees are a newable resource and the paper usage is a non-issue...if you really want to get into the Green aspect of Geocaching then lets talk about the GPS's battery usage. Do you use only rechargeables? If not what about all those AA and AAA batteries that end up going in the trash and ultimately the land fills? What about the environmental impact we have trampling into and out of cache areas? Personally I think the useage of paper is less of an impact than what some of the other actions are.
  12. 1. How did you originally hear about geocaching? I bought a GPS to use for a new job as a Driver and while searching the internet for tips and tricks on the GPS's features I stumbled across Geocaching. 2. Why did you want to get involved? I have always read and enjoyed books about Pirates so I have been a Pirate at heart since I was young. What self respecting Pirate doesn't like hunting treasure?
  13. I have taken to carying around with me a pamphlet that I located at http://www.geocacher-u.com/. It explains Geocaching and has some useful information on it. I have yet to actual give one out to anyone who has questioned me about what I was doing while out searching...but I have given out several to friends who have expressed interest in getting into Geocaching themselves.
  14. I would have just waited for the cop to arrive and explain what was going on. He might have helped you look for the cache if, indeed, it was on public property. It is on Private Property. However I have since found out that the cache owner did not seek nor receive permission to place this cache on Property marked with No Trespassing signs.
  15. I was approached by a rather Irrate Home Owner recently while searching for a Cache named Fish Food. I was looking into a drain pipe when he walked up on me and demanded to know what I was doing. He told me he had called the Law and that I had better go. I felt it best to tell this man the truth as he was obviously upset but that didn't seem to matter to him. Two things that are important to know about this...First I was on Public Property not this Gentlemans land. searching an area near a pond which was marked as a No Trespassing Area. Two, while I was leaving a Police oficer did indeed pull up and watched me leave but didn't try to stop me. I was on this property acting in good faith that this cache was placed with permission...There had been many others who had logged this cache prior to my run for it and no one else had any problems. After I was confronted I reported this cache and it has since been archived.
  16. I have ben using a Garmin Nuvi 200 for Geocaching over the last three months. Tonight I ordered a Garmin 60CSx and am anxiously awaiting the Big Brown Truck.
  17. I got noticed a couple of weeks ago by a couple at a Lamp Post Cache. I happened to be wearing a Shirt from Alltel that was given to me by my Daughter. I held up my GPS and pointed to my clipboard and told them that I was searching out WiFi Hotspots for the company and walked on. That seemed to satisfy them.
  18. That's not a "package deal", since all that stuff is included by Garmin with the unit. You're not getting anything extra. If they're trying to promote that as something special, they're pulling a fast one. GPSCity has it for 297.95, and they don't lie to you. Amazon's current price is $279.97. Really...? This is how they are promoting this GPS...Heres the Link http://www.gpsonsale.com/garmin/products/6...4h7h-fXPkuXBk2C
  19. I have been doing some research and giving thought to buying a new Garmin 60CSx. I found this unit as a package deal through GPsonsale.com for $299.99 + shipping. The package comes with GPSMAP® 60CSx unit 64 MB microSD Belt clip USB interface cable MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager CD Lanyard Owner's Manual Quick-Start Guide Checked this unit at the Bass Pro Shops here in Springfield Mo and it retails here for $399.99 minus the package. Is GPsonline a good company to deal with?
  20. The ionosphere can become more active and cause both ranging errors and, in extreme cases, tracking problems. These are more frequent around solar max, but they can happen anywhere in the 11-year cycle. NOAA has a space weather site that predicts and monitors these storms. I don't see that anything significant happened this last weekend. WAAS helps a lot to correct for iono errors, and gives an indication of the amount of remaining error that your receiver can use to bump up its EPE if things are bad. This is exactly where I was headed with my question. Thanks.
  21. Hate to ask a question in the middle of a thread but...How do Solar Anomalies such as Solar Flares effect GPS signal Receptions? I know they can jack with other wireless signals and the news media use to report these occurences frequently.
  22. I've noticed that with my Nuvi when I sit still the accuracy drops off. If I am moving around the accuracy rating goes up. I am in the habit of arriving on site and walking a short grid pattern of approx 10 yards in a given direction...turning 90 degrees and doing the same. My accuracy rating usually rises and gets me on the right track.
  23. I have a fanny pack that I have all my Geocaching necessities in. The pack has a conveinant pocket on the front of it with a velcro flap that my Garmin Nuvi fits in very nicely. The fanny pack is leather and provides good rain protection as well.
  24. Just outside of Lebanon Missouri on Old Route 66 is a cache named "The Jolly Green Giant" It is listed as the largest Ammo can in the state. (GC1MDCE) Fun cache with plenty of room for SWAG. I Logged it at 6:28 p.m. on 10/11/2009
  25. I had a muggle walk up on me just a couple fo days ago. I had on a T-Shirt which had been given to me by a Friend who use to work for Altel...I told the muggle that I worked for Altel and was searching out WiFi hotspots to report back to the Main Offices.
