  1. Is there an existing thread on that?I just did my first pocket last night and loaded them....my side bar turned into a decimal point... and was starting to rethink how many I really wanted to load at one time. Rob
  2. I dont believe so,I have the Legend as well and it would be nice to have that option.GC#,s are difficult to search by eye to be sure. The find by name option is painfully slow and the find nearest option still leaves you with pages to scroll through depending on how many you have loaded....hmmm they kind of dropped the ball there me thinks.
  3. Yes thats a handy feature for viewing caches in any city world wide.Enter any city name in your home location box, open any cache listing and click that map and they are all there.great if your traveling and want to do a bit of caching along the way or smaller towns and cities around home.
  4. I like that idea!! I was in a Conservation Area today trying to recall how that map on the board looked. To add to that, twice today we came to intersections,we knew the trail was one big loop but which way was the shortest distance to the cache??? Yup!! chose wrong both times....a picture of that map would have saved us alot of walking.I like dat one!!!Good Stuff!!
  5. I've heard about OLED but not in detail,I just read some articles on google about it and wow sounds like that technology is going to improve alot of devices. Thanks for the info guys!! Rob
  6. Greetings all! I have the Legend HCx,I recently added city nav to it and for local caches I'm using it to get on site.I'm using an external power source in the car so I have been using the brightness at maximum for long periods for better visibility in the day light hours. My knowledge of displays is limited,so I was wondering if this could cause any issues over the long run such as screen burn?or are these screens a different beast altogether?I know with tv's in show rooms they are close to the upper limits of the display and yet the manual suggests its not wise to do that over the long run.Apologies if this subject exists already as I've not had a successful search for info on this subject.....or any subject for that matter Thanks Rob
  7. Agreed!!Especially on a city cache when your trying to stay under the radar and your pacing around looking like you just got hit in the back of the head with a cabbage, the legend might have to wait in the car for those ones in the future me thinks......
  8. Note avatar and quote below............. I used to moose hunt Northern Canada before the GPS came along......Yep! some late nights getting back to camp to be sure!hehe the good ole days!I love my GPS!
  9. Ahhhhh.....thats what those are!I've seen them on various cables.Thats good to know. Its amazing where these things go,you get your specific info and lots of stuff you can apply elsewhere. Thanks again!
  10. If you go to setup>display>display mode there also 3 options there as well, daytime, nightime and auto. lol.....its getting dark here now and mines plugged into the pc and it just switched to the night screen so we know auto works hehe
  11. where are you trying to search from?I just looked at caches in texas by entering Dallas Texas where I normally enter my home location on the home page. All the maps and info were there. Rob
  12. Thats a good point! I bought the etrex summit(no H) over a year ago but just got the time to start caching this past July.I started with the summit and got used to that steady needle, its the first thing I noticed the first time out with the legend hcx and in a high muggle area all that pacing back and forth is a bit of a pain. I'll be keeping the summit for the compass when required.Overall I'm quite happy with the Legend hcx but at upgrade time a compass will be a must have in an all in one unit.
  13. I'm really new but I can say its fun!One of my first caches the the co-ords took me to the centre of a park and then they had me walk a bearing to the cache.I really enjoyed that one!just something to consider.I'll be watching for more caches like that one.Great Fun!!!
  14. The cheap generic AC adapter I have only outputs 5VDC at 500mA through its USB connector and that handles the Legend, so you shouldn't have any problem with the Tomtom adapter at 2A. ...ken... i use 1 cable for my canon camera, tomtom and garmin handheld. i just leave it attached to my pc and stick whatever device i'm' using in it and it works fine. Ok thanks guys I'm thinking it should be ok then.I just wanted to err on the side of caution. The pc cable that came with unit and the car power cable on Garmins website have a round inline cylinder and I was'nt sure what it was, but now I'm guessing its a fuse.My tomtom 12volt cable has the fuse visible on the socket end so I thought I had better check.Sounds like I'm good to go then!I have a map package now so I wanted the external power supply for the constant backlighting. Many Thanks!!!
  15. [ ...ken... Hi ken Yes my gut was telling me it would probably be ok,the tomtom cable is fused. The only concern I had was the output rating of 5v2a,so the 5v is standard but the 2amp could very is what I was thinking.Hopefully someone with a purchased garmin cable for the legend will post the specs from the cable,Garmin only describes it as a 12volt power adapter. Thanks for the info!! Take care Rob hmmmm after usb cables its on to how to quote properly........
  16. Hello everyone I had my legend hcx hooked up to the pc downloading caches, when I was finished I noticed I had used my tomtom usb cable,it didnt appear to hurt anything and it got me wondering if I could use my tomtom car cable with the legend in the car.Is a usb connection standard voltage etc?I cant find the specs on the legend car cable, the tomtom car cable is OUTPUT:5v2a INPUT:12/24v.Does anyone have a Legend hcx car cable with the specs on it?Or tell me if its a standard universal voltage/amp for usb connections? Thanks Rob
  17. I'm using the legend HCx as well.I've been saving the cache pages in a folder and then just drag n drop it in as txt files in my tomtom document folder using tomtom home as I always have it with me to get the site. All the info is there including the 1st page of logs,if you want the hint you have to decrypt it before you save it.I'm sure this could be done with a Nuvi as well as long as it supports viewing documents, just another option if you have a car unit as well.
  18. I was trying to do the same thing today on my shiney new Etrex legend HCx,the manual is somewhat lacking...But anyway... just for the record the above procedure is the same on the Legend HCx as I just tried and can verify. What a great resource this forum is!!...........I'm off to learn more! Ps. I just got the Legend on Friday, was wondering when I start to mark caches as found will the "found icon"show up in that same menu then I wonder.....
  19. Well its pays to read the fine print....I just just noticed when I went into find geocaches (near you)...I was indoors,I went outside and they are all there.Coggins/Jmungdinger many thanks to you both for your help. Now I'm wondering if theres a page to view these files when the gps is off and indoors...but I have much playing to do with this thing, its quite a leap from the summit. Thanks again guys!! Rob
  20. For it to show up as a drive, you would have had to select USB Mass Storage on the GPS under Interface in the Setup. Don't do that. Boot up you GPS, the start up your software. Your software should now see the GPS unit as a USB device. Caches get loaded to the unit, not the datacard. Ok... that seemed to work,no error message but the files are not in the unit when I go find the geocaches page its says none found.I checked the device manager with card out and it now sees it as"garmin usb device"so that explains that (Thankyou very much ) Now to find out where the files went I dont believe they are on the unit.
  21. You can also use MapSource - the software that came with your unit - to download caches. Now, a couple of questions? 1. Does EasyGps know that you are using a gps on a usb and not on a serial port? 2. I'm suspicious that your computer is not seeing your gps. If it is showing up as a drive (i.e. f:), the gps is looking at the card, not the unit. Waypoint and track data are filed in the fixed memory, not on the card. When you connect the gps to the computer it should default to the unit, not to the card. Check your device manager (this is an XP solution - someone can correct me if the device manager in Vista is different) and see if there is a yellow question marks associated with one or more USB hubs. If so, your computer is not seeing the device. Unistall the driver associated with the usb hub that has the yellow question mark. Turn off Easy GPS. Connect your gps to the computer and turn it on, again, and then let the operating system try to reconfigure the driver for a usb hub. Ok lets see.... Easygps asked for and knows its on USB.The device manager sees it as "Garmin etrex hcx micro sd usb device" and says its functioning normally.I have tried removing the card and just sending to the unit but get the same error.I will remove the card again and see what the device manager sees it as then.....beyond that I will try mapshare and see what happens with that. many thanks Rob

  23. Happy Friday everyone! I'm sitting here with my shiney new legend hcx trying to download some caches, easy gps tells me there no gps reciever plugged in but my computer can see it as drive f,the interface picture is on the gps screen, all of that went just like the manual said,I have the correct model choosen in EGPS......am I missing something obvious here my computer skills are average at best so i'm hoping its something dumb...like me As far as other info:I have a 4GB card in it and I'm running vista on a laptop if thats any help. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Rob
  24. Wow... interesting topic as I am researching some higher end models.I'm currently using the summit but also have a tomtom 630.For what its worth I came up with a little temporary system using them both.I simply save the cache listing page as a txt file and view them as documents on my tomtom, all the info is there(make sure you decyrpt the hint if your so inclined before saving the file) Having said that in my short time here the PM is well worth the money IMHO...the constant maintainance of my little system and others I've read can get confusing very quickly me thinks.Anywho....a wealth of knowledge in these forums for sure!I learn something everytime I drop in. Thanks guys! Rob
